Re: [expert] gdm won't start: error while loading shared libraries...
As it turns out, I did have gnome2 installed, but ldconfig wasn't looking at /opt/gnome2/lib, where the needed file resided. I did ldconfig /opt/gnome2/lib and gdm is working fine now. However, now I have the problem that when I choose the GNOME2 session in gdm, it brings up IceWM instead. Same goes with KDE3. I had tried to install Gnome2 a while ago (like you said, it was a pain), so I thought maybe I had some conflicting packages. I ripped out a number of gnome-related packages to try and clean things up and am now trying to replace them. Maybe I cleaned things all too well... :) - Kathy On Monday 30 September 2002 04:15 pm, Randall Jonasz wrote: I forgot you said you have 9.0 installed. Hmm... this command returns nothing. That must be a bad thing. :) I tried messing around with ldconfig, because it has solved problems for me before, but I don't understand it well enough to use it as it probably should be used. ldconfig -p | grep libgnome returns the following, FWIW: libgnomevfs.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomevfs.so.0 libgnomevfs-pthread.so (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-pthread.so libgnomeui.so.32 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeui.so.32 libgnomeui-2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeui-2.so.0 libgnomesupport.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomesupport.so.0 libgnomesupport-2.0.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomesupport-2.0.so.0 libgnomeprintui-2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeprintui-2.so.0 libgnomeprint.so.15 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeprint.so.15 libgnomeprint-2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeprint-2.so.0 libgnomeole2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomeole2.so.0 libgnomemm-1.2.so.9 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomemm-1.2.so.9 libgnomedb.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomedb.so.0 libgnomecanvaspixbuf.so.1 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomecanvaspixbuf.so.1 libgnomecanvas-2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnomecanvas-2.so.0 libgnome.so.32 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnome.so.32 libgnome-window-settings.so.1 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnome-window-settings.so.1 libgnome-desktop-2.so.0 (libc6) = /usr/lib/libgnome-desktop-2.so.0 - Kathy On Monday 30 September 2002 02:32 pm, Randall Jonasz wrote: Hi, Have you tried ldconfig -p | grep libgnome-2 to make sure the library is recognized by ld?
