[Fink-devel] RFC-822 vs. here-doc multilining

For several months now, Services.pm has noted that RFC-822 (whitespace
indentation) for multiline fields in a .info is deprecated. And
there's a commented-out warning for that syntax. Any reason not to
uncomment the warning and head towards retiring that style completely?

Supporting this style makes it impossible to include fields for which
leading whitespace is significant within a heredoc. For now, this
mainly applies to python InstallScript in a SplitOff. Given that we
settled on 'InfoN: <<' blocks for future incompatible .info files,
this will apply to even top-level fields in those files.

It should not. The problem with /usr/sbin/nm comes from an X11 version 
check in the *old* fink-0.16 that comes with the binary installer. It is 
no longer necessary in more recent versions of fink. The quick start doc 
should say that after installing Fink via the installer, you should 
update *immediately* before doing anything else. "Update" here means 
"apt-get update; apt-get install fink" or the corresponding choice in 
FinkCommander, not "fink update", which will crash if the dev tools are 
not installed.

The quick start doc should also mention that the X11 SDK should
also be installed in order to compile X11 apps against the
Apple's X11 (if not, Fink proposes to replace your Apple's X11
with all the XFree86 stuff).
If you want to stay with the bindist, the dev tools and the X11DSK 
should *not* be necessary. I still believe that this is possible, 
although I had bad experiences when trying this myself.

I think someone should *really* try this seriously: Remove the dev 
tools, or at least the nm, make, and [g]cc executables and 
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xlib.h, and then install a fresh copy of Fink 
from the binary installer. Try to find a way to get this updated so that 
the binary installation of the packages in 10.3/current is possible (Try 
to install the binary version of texmacs, for example).

Then correct the quickstart doc so that it corresponds to your 
experience. (I am hiding immediately, I don't have the time for this now 
or in the next 10 days).

And I would add that X11 SDK must be installed before X11, so order:
Developer tools, X11 SDK, X11, fink

Hello Community.

Thanks to some very important bits of work finished by Baba Yoshihiko we
now have a system in place that allows us to offer translated versions
of the web-site. Baba Yoshihiko was friendly enough to start work on a
Japanese version and some parts are translated already. If you feel you
have the time and stamina to become part of the i18n team, you are
welcome to join the new mailing list fink-i18n.
This mailing list is basically meant to coordinate the efforts of all
people involved in translating the documentation or the web-site into
different languages. Of course some other aspects will be discussed on
that list as well, for example the Layout, Usability or Accessibility of
the Fink web-site.
Please be warned, that being a translator can be a time consuming job.
To keep all the possible languages consistent there should be an effort
to synchronize the translated version with the original version as often
as possible. However, nothing has been decided yet and everyone that
feels they want to either
a) Help translating
b) Help improve the web-site
c) Provide Feedback about the web-site
d) Something that fits but I have not mentioned
is welcome to join the list.
