Keep the List on Fjords
This message is from: "lhcarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Let's keep this list about horses please. Not all of us think alike so let's not get people upset. If a subject is related to horses is ok but if we get into politics that is not. Thank you! Les & Margaret Hoagland Callahan, CA The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
Driving
This message is from: "lhcarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> As many know I have been driving for a long time and I agree with Lisa that a horse ( pony ) needs to learn how to drive single first. I have had a few horses that I have bought that have only been driven in a pair or more. I find with all those cases, I have found a horse that does not have the confidence to start a vehicle. But if you train them first to pull single and are going good single and then bring them together as a pair, you will have a better horse. I began driving because I had a wife that was afraid of horses and this was a way that I could share my horses with her. I would handle the horse and she could just sit there. I have since changed wives but the driving has stayed. As one of my mentors said driving is a mental sport and a great way to relax. Training is the most important thing for both horse & driver. The next most important thing is safety and last is that you are dealing with an animal which can react at any time never take anything for granted. The only safe horse is made of plastic but with training and safe habits you can enjoy driving. I find the most important thing to teach is whoa and STAND. I almost always unharness my horses at a " stand ". At this point they are home and tired but as often as possible I still have someone there to head. Never leave a horse unattended that is asking for trouble. Happy Trails. Les Les & Margaret Hoagland Callahan, CA
Safe
This message is from: "lhcarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Lisa My prayers are with O E & Pat. Lisa brings us an important point about safety. there is no safe horse or most any animal. The only one that is truly safe is in bronze. I have worked in the public for over thirty five year and knew that fact. The first thing that I considered at any event was " what could go wrong " and then try to plan how to handle it. I have taken a long time trying to get my current Fjord mare up to my standard of safety. I 'm get old so it takes a while because I can't put the miles on that I like to. Also where I live there is not the chance you expose her to the thing I would like. My old Apply got rest his soul was a horse you can't buy. You could take him in to the lions den a he would behave but I still treated him like " what would bite " . Not to discourage anyone from driving or any or activity but just realize that it could happen to you a try to plan for it. The general public thinks that " it's just a cute horse and they can turn the key to the off position " . But we know that is not going to happen. BE SAFE OUT THERE ! No Bits
This message is from: "lhcarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> May 7th our town of Etna CA had their Parade and it was a beautiful day. One of the entries was a group of eight riders ( mix of breeds ) who are involved in the " local horse program " . They work with troubled kids and their horses. This part of the group are Pareele ( not sure of spelling ) trained. They all rode the busy parade with no bridles and no halters just a loop around the horse's neck. So well trained horses can be handled in many ways but not every horse or rider will responded to that little control. It's all in the time and confidence of the rider. Everyone at the parade was impressed. Les Les & Margaret Hoagland Callahan, CA
Horses" Going"
This message is from: "lhcarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The " Funny story" I have to share about horses & their "business" is that I used to do three street fairs a week with my horse & carriage giving rides. We parked on the street near a corner and waited for riders. My Appy would always relieve himself out on the job and it was always a fun people watch as the stream rolled down the street. In the summer many would be in sandals or even bare foot. Their eyes would some time follow the stream up in time to jump across, some times not. But one night a little 5 year old was sitting on the curb about 30 + + + + feet away just splashing in the stream until his mother finally came awake and saw where the stream came from! Horses can always entertain one way or another. Les & Margaret Hoagland Callahan, CA

Rabies & shoes
This message is from: "LHCarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A few month back in our area ( 40 miles south of the Oregon border in California ) we had a vet who had to put a horse down because of rabies. After the investigation they decided that it was due to bats. California has not had very many case of rabies in horses but for $ 11 a shot my horses won't be one of them. The strange thing is that the brother of the Vet when asked said no he was not going to get the shots. As to riding with a horses in a trailer I once had my truck ( which we used with a stock rack ) break down out on the road. So my wife had to come after me with a in closed box trailer and there was no place to tie the horse. So I got to ride home with him, me sitting on a chair ( folding ) and holding the rope. This guy is a great horse and nothing gets to him but I still would not like to do it again. What we have to do some times. I was more afraid that he would step side ways and put his foot through the side walls. Karen we have a place behind us for sale which is gentle slops and some rocky areas ( 300 + acres ) great for horses to graze. ( still no baby ) Shoes when we worked the city streets with our carriages all our horses had not only shoes but special shoes. Keeps the feet from wearing out plus gave better grip and protection from stones ect. Les & Margaret H. Callahan,Ca
Intro. /age
This message is from: "LHCarriage" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi my name is Les D. Hoagland and I have been lurking for about 2 1/2 year because I don't know much about computers. My family, Mother ( 89 ) Wife Margaret ( 64 ) and I ( 57 ) live about 65 miles south of the Oregon border. We have four horses (28 yr.'s)Appy , (17 yr.'s) Standardbred mare, (8 yr.'s) Appy gelding and of course our 5 yr. old Fjord bred mare.I am a semi retired professional horse drawn carriage owner/operator which I've done for over 28 year mostly in So. Cal. We still have a beautiful white Vis-a-Via , which we still use a lot for weddings. Also other carts buggies and horse related things. I have driven ever thing from single, pair, to a four in hand. My wife is a Special-Ed school teacher and hopes to retire in 3 yr.'s. Our main interests with our Fjords will be driving in the mountain and parades. Also enjoying raising cute little fur creatures. I have met a few of the wonderful listers and hope to meet many more. I have learned a lot off the list and will back into the lurk and stop being windy. Les & Margaret H. Callahan,Ca
