Galiana Turns Two and Virginia Evaluation News
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am reply to Paula's post and link to the lovely pictures of Ironwood Galiana. I do need to correct her dam information. Galiana is out of SF Saska, a Holunder daughter, and not out of Gene Bauer's venerable mare, Severina. Saska is also the dam of our stallion, Ironwood Blitzen, who is by Gjest. We also have bred Saska to LFF Ulend and have a very nice grey dun gelding, Ironwood Crow Hreidar.  If Galiana had been the offspring of any other mare, we would have kept her for our program. However, we are excited that Paula has her and is going to focus on dressage with her. Since I am posting, I thought I would update the List on the activities in Virginia related to the upcoming NFHR Evaluation. We just finished an Evaluation Prep clinic at my farm. It was lead by Curt Pierce and we focused on the conformation evaluation and practiced all the tests. Most of the participants had not been to an evaluation before and wanted to know what they could expect. Preparation is critical for an evaluation. You definitely want to practice before you come and we all learned what we needed to practice with our horses this weekend. If there is further interest in a preparation clinic on the East Coast, please feel free to contact Curt Pierce. I know he'll be in NC for the Fjords and Friends ride, but that week may be pretty full with planned events already. A little preparation can go a long, long way, so I'd encourage anyone who is new to the Evaluation system or hasn't been to an Evaluation in a while to contact Curt for assistance. He is just the best, although we did learn that I can't read the advanced driving test from the back of a marathon cart without getting motion sickness at the trot! Speaking of the Virginia Evaluation in Herndon, VA. It is definitely on for August 18 & 19th.  We do have room for more horses. Let me know if you need an entry form and I will mail one to you. We also are holding the Virginia Fjord Fjestival at the same time as the Evaluation. The Fjestival will feature demonstrations, vendors and highlight sale horses. (Sales ho res do not have to participate in the Evaluation.) More information about Fjestival is on my web site, http://www.ironwood-farm.com. The preliminary sales catalog should be out by June 15th, but check for updates. We get horses added to the sale over the summer. We are expecting a sizeable public turn-out given our premier location and the strong horse community in this area. Marketing and promotion efforts are in full swing.  Paula will be present for the Virginia Evaluation as our official photographer. I hope Paula won't mind me saying that she is a very gifted professional horse photographer and we're thrilled to obtain her services. She will be available for individual photo sessions in addition to her official work. I certainly plan to use her services as we are bringing four Fjords, including Blitzen. Happy Memorial Day to everyone! NFHR Virginia Evaluation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am pleased to announce to the List that the NFHR BOD has approved August 18 - 19, 2007 for the NFHR Virginia Evaluation. Since I like planning, I wanted to get the date and preliminary details out as soon as possible. The Evaluation will be held at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, VA. Frying Pan Park is a facility dedicated to horse activities and hosts horse shows, horse auctions, and two USEA horse trials. It has plenty of permanent stabling, two outdoor rings, an indoor ring, a cross country course, and trails. The footing is excellent and the park is well maintained. It's about 25 miles from Washington, DC and close to Dulles Airport. There's plenty of hotels, restaurants and shopping nearby, including a new Dover Saddlery. The Virginia Evaluation will be the ONLY NFHR Evaluation on the East Coast in 2007. Northern Virginia is known for its strong support of horse activities, so we are expecting to attract a crowd of spectators. I am engaged in promotional efforts now. Professional equine photographer and Fjord owner, Paula Chmura, has agreed to be the Evaluation's official photographer. There will be on-site vendor opportunities, too. We have rented both the indoor and outdoor rings for the Evaluation. August in Virginia can be hot and we may have afternoon thunder showers. The host committee felt it was critically important to have an inclement weather plan in place for all tests. Entry information will be available later this year. For those of you who are thinking of bringing your horse(s) to an Evaluation, I know that Curt Pierce is trying to plan some educational clinics on the conformation evaluation and performance tests. Look for future announcements for those clinics. Meanwhile if you have any specific questions about the 2007 NFHR Virginia Evaluation, please e-mail me. 2001 Virginia Evaluation Results
This message is from: Curtis Pierce <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone, Sorry that it has taken so long for me to summarize the evaluation that occurred last weekend. It was a great weekend and it was a pleasure to host the evaluation in Lexington, Virginia. It turned out to be one of the best opportunities to see good Fjord horses and meet their owners. We had thirty-five entries with thirty-three Norwegian Fjord Horses attending the evaluation at the beautiful Virginia Horse Center on October 20 & 21. The weather was sunny with afternoon temperatures in the mid-seventies. The evaluators were Jim Havelhurst from Oregon, and Wayne Hipsley from Kentucky. The technical delegate was Tom Hans from Wisconsin. We had two evaluator trainees: Sharon Makurat from Wisconsin, and Pat Wolfe from Ontario, Canada. The Fjord Horses came from Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Virginia. They ranged in age from one year-old to fifteen years-old. In addition, we had many visitors, two of them came all the way from near Detroit, Michigan. Here is a summary of the results. You will have to wait for the record book to find out the rest of the information. Also, sorry that I don't have the time and space to list the sire and dam for each Fjord. Re: Virginia Evaluation
This message is from: Pat <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I died and went to heaven - at the Virginia Horse Center. I cannot explain how wonderful the facilities were there. Everything had to been designed by horse people who knew what they were doing. All the stalls were the same, cement to ceiling dividers and heavy gage wire fronts with doors that worked! Major high ceilings with excellent ventilation - water available with in steps - and bathrooms IN EACH barn! Wash racks - and warm up areas everywhere, and the footing was great - three rings in close proximity to the warm ups - the covered outdoor arena was level and equal footing - I did not want to leave. Thank you to Curt and Marsha and the whole evaluation committee - it was a number one class operation. The get together Friday night was wonderful and the food was great. It was very nice to meet the east coast people - and to see the great Fjords owned there. Thank you to Tom Hans who did a great job substituting for Mike, he has very good posture while standing in front of the evaluators waiting for and handing back their test sheets - must come from that Natural Horsemanship training. And thanks to Jim Havelhurst and Wayne Hipsley - evaluators and Pat Wolfe and Sharon Makurat - trainees. It was a great time - well worth the 20 hr drive. We got blue level on our third little stallion - with an 82 and 8.5 overall. Both the fillies that are for sale received blue as well - the Manus daughter received an 83.25 and the Bjorgard daughter had an 82.25 Both fillies are still available at $10,000 each. Pat Holland

This message is from: Nancy Newport <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello Mary, I look forward to meeting you also. No, we weren't on the wagon train - that would be Joyce Concklin from Central Florida - I believe she did a wagon train recently. Getting ready to leave on Thursday for Virginia - although it seems ironic to go up north when it has finally cooled off down here! Nancy Newport Pony-Up Farm Gainesville, FL
Re: Virginia Evaluation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Nancy Will be nice to meet you in Lexington. By chance were you on the carroll County Wagon Train this July . Someone was there with two fjords from Florida and we met and talked for a while. I can't remember their name, so it could be you. I was riding a roan rat tail app/arab cross. Hope it was you see you on Friday Mary Harvey
Re: Virginia Evaluation
This message is from: Nancy Newport <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello , I'm also preparing to go to the Virginia Evaluation. This is also my first one and also the first time I'll get to be around a large number of Fjords. I can't wait! There's also a couple of horses coming that I really would like to have a look at. I have never shown a horse in hand before so I'm practicing that. My husband, Dave, says it looks like I'm training for the 30 ft. dash, and it's true I'm winded after jogging around those cones. And, yes, I do have the horses with me. My two girls have been taking time off all summer as in Florida it's way too hot to do anything. I'm entered in intro driving with both of them so am doing a crash (not literally) course for the last two weeks. The six year old should be fine, but the three year old was hitched last spring for a month, then all summer off, and now we'll see if we can pull it off. We should at least be able to wander around the arena in a semblance of the pattern and remain under control. Both the girls are getting very fuzzy, and the six year old's in foal so that with all summer off they look a little dumpy - but what the heck I plan on havig a blast!!! Looking forward to meeting everyone, Nancy Newport Gainesville, Florida
Notes about the Virginia Evaluation
This message is from: Curtis Pierce <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everyone! We are getting close to the evaluation at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia, on Oct 20 & 21. If you are interested in sponsoring classes or putting an ad in our program, please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks to Martie Bolinski we are raffling off one of her beautiful stain glass pieces at the evaluation. You can see a photo of the piece at: http://www.geocities.com/southeastfjords/stainglass_raffle.html. The tickets are $2.00 each, or 3 for $5.00. Please e-mail me for tickets. For those coming to the evaluation, the long range forecasts are for sunny weather with temperatures near 65 degrees. It may be that the leave's colors are at their peak that weekend. So it should be beautiful. Based on what our Fjords look like, we should call this the woolly Fjord evaluation. Curt Pierce Bristow, VA
