FrameMaker 8: Bullets Disappearing in PDF

2011-04-07 Thread Art Campbell
Jill, It's really hard to trouble shoot from a distance without full
system info.

But if you're on XP, the first step would be to download the MS Hotfix
for all PostScript printers, which fixes a number of problems
including some text dropouts

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909 (Gives details on the Hotfix)

That "consistent" behavior, combined with far fewer problems when writing large
documents (anything over 50 to 60 pages, frankly) is why I use FrameMaker for
95% of my writing work.

Microsoft Word is only used for occasional 1 to 2 to 10 page internal
documents that gets circulated to a few people inside the company. Particular

2011-04-07 Thread Neeraj Jain
Yes, this is undoubtedly an excellent article. I began my Framemaker journey
with 7.0 release, about five years back. Everyone around me used to say that
Framemaker has got steep learning curve. I was kind of scared when I opened it
for first time. I could only type and was not able to do any of the things that
I regularly do in Microsoft Word. I remember cursing myself and Framemaker for
its complex interface.
Later, I stumbled upon an excellent tutorial. This tutorial taught me
everything. Now, I have FM 8.0 on my system. I really enjoy working in
Framemaker although things are much faster in Microsoft Word. What i
particularly like is its consistent behavior and Books feature.

Clarification to previous posting. Has anyone experienced a problem with
bullets disappearing from a PDF? They are all visible in FrameMaker, but
disappear when the PDF is generated. It does not occur with all users and only

Has anyone experienced a problem with bullets appearing from a PDF? We are not
seeing the problem with all documents and it does not occur on every machine
with FrameMaker installed. We already verified that the Zapf Dingbats font is
installed on the user's machine. This problem is only occurring with bullets.
We are printing using the Adobe printer, generating the ps file and then
creating the PDF using distiller.

Re: A simple numbering question

2011-04-07 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Andy

With respect, I don't think the "two problems" that you listed are problems at
all if you use consistent chapter/section/topic structure. Predictable
structure is a Good Thing anyway, and even without using structured Frame it it
a good idea to have well-defined structures for different types of content -
and stick to them.

You also describe a complex numbering series as "hard enough to debug."
Debugging is a snap if you draw a matrix of your numbered formats (as rows) and
placeholders (as columns). Keep this available (I used to pin mine to the wall,
but haven't needed it in years) and the cause of any numbering problem becomes
immediately obvious.

And as Richard said, there is nothing to stop you using different series for,
say, tables and graphics, and managing those at the document numbering level.

I would much prefer something like this than having to choose between Numbered
and NumberedFirst when writing a list. No big deal, obviously, but one less
thing to think about.

Roger

Subject: Re: A simple numbering question

Thanks for everyone's input, though it mostly confirms the two problems I
listed.

I already have 4 levels of headings and Table, Figure, and Code Listing
numbering in one series, so I don't really want to add 2 more levels everywhere
(and duplicate the work in the appendix numbering series--but for that I
should've used $chapnum). It was hard enough to debug, and with this, I'd have
to add the autonumber series to most of my paragraph tags, not just the
numbered ones.

And I am reluctant to require some sort of intro paragraph, because I often
use the heading as an intro (but not always) so that it shows up in the TOC. So
that will give me sections like this:

 4.3.2.1 Copying a File

 To copy a file:

 1. Select the file ...

In my situation, it seems like numbered list (and step) numbering will always
be a 2-format deal (Numbered and NumberedFirst).

  Regards,

Andy

FrameMaker 8: Bullets Disappearing in PDF

2011-04-07 Thread Grunewald, Jill
Has anyone experienced a problem with bullets appearing from a PDF? We are not
seeing the problem with all documents and it does not occur on every machine
with FrameMaker installed. We already verified that the Zapf Dingbats font is
installed on the user's machine. This problem is only occurring with bullets.
We are printing using the Adobe printer, generating the ps file and then
creating the PDF using distiller.

2011-04-07 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Oh, yes, Interleaf was definitely a good product at the time.

For us, it was just:

(a) the cost was much higher ... as I recall, Interleaf did not have a
floating license concept, only fixed per-system licenses,
(b) had more features than we really needed in our Engineering team
(like way better color support as I recall - our team did not need color at
all),
(c) it "took over" the SunOS system by running its *own* windowing
platform - from the normal startup login, you started the Interleaf software,
not Sunview!

So, if you ran Interleaf, you could not do anything else - no other window
could be opened for a SunOS shell, etc.

Us engineers balked at those windowing limitations more than anything else. We
were doing other work ... and our documentation (specs, requirements, tool
documentation, etc.) work was secondary. The server-based FrameMaker floating
licenses, running in SunView, made far more sense for us.

This is *unlike* the Tech Pubs folks in marketing ... who were writing
data-sheets, company collateral, ads, etc! :) Those folks used and preferred
Interleaf at the time - for darn good reasons.

I compared FM 1.x to Interleaf that same year (likewise on the Sun 3/50). I
really liked it and thought it had great promise, but I advised my client to go
with Interleaf (and worked on that for the next several years). FM had great
promise, but was still a relatively young program lacking many key features.

I didn't return to FM until 95 or 96 (v5.1, I believe), by which time it was
far more mature. With a few interruptions when working for clients wedded to
Word, I've been a happy FM user ever since.

FrameMaker 8: Bullets Disappearing in PDF

Clarification to previous posting. Has anyone experienced a problem with
bullets disappearing from a PDF? They are all visible in FrameMaker, but
disappear when the PDF is generated. It does not occur with all users and only

Freeware RoboHelp Merged CHM Project Tool

2011-04-07 Thread Chris Despopoulos
Hi All...

Not necessarily FrameMaker, but obliquely related...

I just posted a little Java app that helps create alias files and redirect
files when making a merged CHM RoboHelp project. If you have tried doing this,
then you know what I mean. It's got a GUI, and it creates the content of the
master ALI file and the redirect.htm file automatically. You paste the content
into your files, and viola. One good point about copying/pasting the
content... it never writes to your file system, so it's pretty safe.

You can find it at:
http://cudspan.net/plugins/

Near the bottom of the page is a DOWNLOADS list. Expand the Java Tools
section, and then the RH_RedirectChecker section. You can download it from
there, and I posted some light-weight instructions. I hope you find it useful!
