FM8: Bookmarks problem
Hello List, I'm having a problem with PDF generation from unstructured FM8. I'm trying to build a sub-book at the moment for tech reviewers, consisting of a front page, a generated TOC and five chapters, in that order. Bookmarks generation is selected and it is set up to make bookmarks for a specific include list of paragraph types. The types defined for the TOC are not in that include list. Although the book itself is in unstructured FM, the book structure is very tight and strictly hierarchical, because this content will eventually be converted to structured. The bookmarks for the chapters are fine, but they are preceded by bookmarks for every entry in the TOC and for the front page. There is also a bookmark for the front page, which I do understand, since it contains one para format that is in the include list. How can I suppress this bookmarking of the TOC entries, please? RE: FM8: Bookmarks problem
I think you are runnign up against one of FrameMaker's undocumented features. When you generate a PDF, FrameMaker passes bookmark data to Acrobat for all the tag names that are set in the book file's PDF Setup, *plus* data for any additional tags in a specific chapter if that chapter's file-level PDF Setup. This behavior has been this way for a while--at least since FrameMaker 6 and Acrobat 6, which was the first time I came up against it--and was apparently done as a feature (although it is completely undocumented). If you look at the PDF Setup for the TOC file, I am certain you will see all of the ...TOC styles in the Include list box on the Bookmarks tab. Just move them to the Don't Include list and then save the TOC file with these changes. When you next make the PDF, the TOC entries should be gone from the bookmarks list. At my previous employer I actually used this undocumented feature to improve the usability of the bookmarks in a handful of our documents that had atypical organizations. The book-level PDF Setup include the bookmarks to be picked up from *every* chapter, but a couple of chapters had additional, specialized tags identified in their book-level PDF Setup. The annoying thing is that under some set of circumstances I've never identified (because it is pretty rare), FrameMaker spontaneously adds a bunch of errant tags to the PDF Setup bookmarks list for some specific file, like the ...TOC tags in your TOC file. Unless you know the cause you'll spend many hours trying to get the bookmarks to behave (or deleting the errant ones from the PDF each itme you publish). But now you know... -Fred Ridder Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2011 20:11:15 +1200 To: framers@lists.frameusers.com From: hele...@iinet.net.au Subject: FM8: Bookmarks problem Hello List, I'm having a problem with PDF generation from unstructured FM8. OT: Does anyone have an old InDesign template folder?
Framers, I'm teaching myself InDesign CS5, and as of version CS4, Adobe no longer provides a folder of sample templates. When I taught myself Framemaker 200 years ago, I found their well-designed templates to be an excellent point of reference and helped me make better decisions about the set-up of my personally designed templates. Trying to output to HTML 5 ...
Hi, all. I was wondering what (if anything) people are doing to output books (words and significant amount of graphical images too) in HTML 5 format. Either from FrameMaker (usual FM books) or from Acrobat Pro X (from PDF files). I believe that I will not get the special features in HTML 5 (like animation, etc.), but I am looking for at least the basics to be present (text, hyperlinks, images, etc.) so that they could be edited to add additional stuff later. What are people doing for this kind of output flows? I have been searching and not finding much in the way of print drivers or cloud service or even any application that could read PDF or PostScript and output HTML 5 for this ... is this still too early an output flow for people to require? Ideally, I would like to find something like what Adobe is offering for cloud-based PDF generation. Z ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Beginning new project based on book files from previous project
If you rename a file, cross-references to that file will break. IMHO, you shouldn't put the version number in a file name. There is no reason to do that. The best alternative is to put the new files, with the same names, in a new directory and be happy. Otherwise you'll have to fix the cross-references. Thanks to Richard Combs, Steve Johnson and Rick Quattro for helpful insights. We're all in agreement that the version-specific naming structure within each book project is not a good thing -- I'm going to try to get our department to go back to the old way we did it before someone (not I!) got the bright idea to change it. Keeping document window fit to page
When I open a file in FM 9, the document window is always very wide and sometimes shows two pages. The second page is hidden beneath the pods in my workspace and can't be seen. I set Fit Window to Page in the zoom menu. In the View-Options menu, I set Page Scrolling to Vertical. This solves the problem for the current file. Yet Page Scrolling reverts to a default value of Variable when I open another file, and I have to repeat these settings for the next file to get the document window to behave. Is there a way to make these settings sticky and my default settings, such as through an option in the maker.ini file? The ritual is getting tiresome and is not a good use of my time. PDFs having a mixture of A4 and A3 page sizes
Dear all I was recently asked to test whether we could produce a PDF with mixed page sizes. I did some experimentation with a colleague using Framemaker 7.2 and Acrobat 8/9, to find out if I could. The results were: 1) All chapters except one had their master page size set to A4, with the one chapter at the end set to A3. Both versions of Acrobat created the manual but the A3 sized chapters were cropped to A4. 2) Having set the Acrobat setting in Distiller to A3, it only created the whole document as A3. I tried it again to size to A4, but got the same result as in Number 1. 3) My colleague tried separating the files. He created the main chapters of the pdf as A4 and created the A3 sized chapter separately, outside the book file. Then he tried to insert the pages, but Acrobat didn't like it. Does anyone know of a setting that I've missed so that when someone sends a pdf to print, it will automatically print my last chapter as A3, instead of A4? I thought that due to the nature of Acrobat, it would only create a PDF as one size, not varying sizes, otherwise there would be an option to automatically resize pages. In the event of the latter, does anyone know of any changes, to support this option, with respect to this in Acrobat 10? FM8: Bookmarks problem
Hello List, I'm having a problem with PDF generation from unstructured FM8. I'm trying to build a "sub-book" at the moment for tech reviewers, consisting of a front page, a generated TOC and five chapters, in that order. TIA, Helen

FM8: Bookmarks problem
I think you are runnign up against one of FrameMaker's undocumented features. When you generate a PDF, FrameMaker passes bookmark data to Acrobat for all the tag names that are set in the book file's PDF Setup, *plus* data for any additional tags in a specific chapter if that chapter's file-level PDF Setup. This behavior has been this way for a while--at least since FrameMaker 6 and Acrobat 6, which was the first time I came up against it--and was apparently done as a feature (although it is completely undocumented). If you look at the PDF Setup for the TOC file, I am certain you will see all of the ...TOC styles in the "Include" list box on the Bookmarks tab. Just move them to the "Don't Include" list and then save the TOC file with these changes.
If anyone would be willing to share their Template folder from an older version of InDesign, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! Carol ** Carol J. Carol, you can also use this as a resource: http://goo.gl/n3ApU. There appear to be more than 130 free templates at the site. And you may find some useful free templates beyond Adobe here: http://goo.gl/EV14r. Trying to output to HTML 5 ...
Hi, all. I was wondering what (if anything) people are doing to "output" books (words and significant amount of graphical images too) in HTML 5 format. I have been searching and not finding much in the way of "print drivers" or "cloud service" or even any application that could read PDF or PostScript and output HTML 5 for this ... is this still too early an output flow for people to require? Ideally, I would like to find something like what Adobe is offering for cloud-based PDF generation. Z
Keeping document window fit to page
Susan, are you working in structured or unstructured FM? According to Scott Prentice in this post, the magnification is saved in the file, but not in XML files: http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2010-April/020048.html Scott also mentions some plug-ins that might be of use to you. PDFs having a mixture of A4 and A3 page sizes
Claire, there was another thread recently that had a similar theme. Maybe your answer is in there: http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2011-June/023385.html Nadine On 07/07/2011 10:32 AM, Wood, Claire (GE Oil & Gas) wrote: > > Dear all > > I was recently asked to test whether we could produce a PDF with mixed > page sizes.
