Re: Frame 8-compatible file format?
I transfer files between Frame 12 and Frame 8 every week without a problem; in Frame 12, I save as v.12 *.mif. These mif file open reliably in Frame 8 every time (and Unicode encoding is maintained, as was pointed out already). -- The message console lets you admire all that nutritious Frame 12 code that Frame 8 excretes as unpalatable. As mentioned, I've yet to encounter a problem. -- Would be nice if I could set the default save format to, mif. Cheers, Mike >>> Framers, A little googling did not clarify anything for me, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm on Frame 8; none of the added features in subsequent releases seemed relevant enough to me to justify upgrading (and it works fine for me on Windows 7). The issue I have is that I need to send some manuals out for quote to be translated, and I want to make sure that the files they send back to me, can be opened in Frame 8. (I figured it's better to clarify upfront, rather than chance running into issues later. I have no idea what the translation companies are able to provide, but Murphy dictates that if I don't clarify, I'll run into issues.)... <<< --- Michael Heine University of Western Ontario London Canada ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Backgrading Frame 12 to Frame 8 - Unicode issue
Hello all - Working with Frame 12, I have to deliver some files to a Frame 8 user. The only option in Frame 12 is to save to version 7 *.mif. That would work if I weren't using Unicode fonts (for Canadian Aboriginal languages). As one would expect, when I open the v.7 miffed files in Frame 8, the diacritics have morphed into question marks. Not good. Suggestions would be welcome. Re: Keyboard shortcut to move into next footnote text flow?
On a related note: I use a Framescript developed by Rick Quattro; it converts footnotes into 'endnotes' (cross-references). I run just the kind of clean-up you describe on the cross-references (copy/paste special is the thing). My output requires endnotes, not footnotes, but I convert a copy of the file back to footnotes (the script is reversible and will convert the cross-reference endnotes back to real footnotes), to keep a native footnoted Frame file (against the rare request for retrograde activity back to MS-Word). Has worked without a hitch (Frame 8-12) for several years, my document collection typically contains 2,000-3,000 foot/endnotes, all told (historians, eh?). ... and yes, twenty years later, I've given up on registering this as an Adobe RFE ... RE: read only in Frame 6
It is also possible to lock a file permanently. - save as mif - open the mif file in your text editor - in the section: - change to [Esc-F-l-k] - below this line, insert [disable Esc-F-l-k] - save the file in your text editor. - for convenience, rename the file to *.fm (it cannot be unlocked via Esc-F-l-k, so it cannot be saved as *.fm either, Framemaker won't mind) To unlock the file, the above procedure has to be reversed. Frame ate my Acrobat!
I just installed Frame 12 in all its icon-coloured glory, and now my Acrobat 955 has gone awol, Windows 7 didn't even understand the file extension any longer. How very rude! Hard to say how Acro 9 was extracted individually, since I installed it as part of CS4. Since CS4 hadn't heard of Frame's rather underhanded surgery, I had to 'uninstall' Acro 9 through CS4 first (it as still listed as installed), before I could reinstall it. The annoying thing is that, to get myself to v. 955, I have to run through the 19 or thereabout patches, since there's no service pack' equivalent. At least I don't have to go through the online activation rigmarole with CS4. ... Acrobat 9? Well may you ask! The last version before the GUI madness struck that left us keyboardists adrift, methinks, and I do like my IBM keyboard -- unless someone can point me to the keyboard shortcuts for all the functions packed into the menu bar on the right in v.11, and transform them from unknown unknowns into known unknowns? I could finally use one of my Acro 11 licenses! Mind you, in my opinion even a mouse-driven menu will trump a keyboard-driven one that is no longer available, any time of the day - a strange way to soften me up for Acro 11, though. Nice try, Frame 12! Oh well, tgif. Good weekend all! Mike ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. Hide paranum in conditional table cell?
Hello all, I have a table with one column containing a control counter that I require. Come pdf production I want to hide that counter (entire column, preferably), so I need conditional text. It's not possible to apply conditional text to a column, and I understand why you cannot hide the autonumumber in conditionalized text in a table cell. The only work-around that occurs to me is to insert a text frame into an anchored frame that's placed in the cell, and apply the condition to the counter I insert in the text frame. That works as far as I can see, and the autonumbered paragraph is not used anywhere else and has its own letter prefix. It still seems somewhat fragile, though - before I go with this, can anyone see anything that might break this scheme (I won't change the table sorting direction in the document.) Cheers and thanks, Mike Michael Heine London, Ontario

Hello all - I forget who asked this question recently, but I don't remember reading an answer: Does anyone know why sometimes when you click on a cross-file cross-reference the source file closes and sometimes it does not close? MI want the source file of the link to stay open. Is there a setting somewhere for that, or is 'close source file' a default that cannot be changed? Cheers, Mike -- Michael Heine London, ON Canada

Dear all, Windows 7 has this fairly useful windows sizing capability, 'Snap' in Windowese. AFAIK it works with Acrobat 9, Frame 8 and earlier; none of the programs that are clad in the new grey Stalin gothic, I mean, Adobe GUI, will allow that much usefulness, including Frame 9. Does anybody know of a secret switch to turn this back on? (BTW, I preferred the Ctrl-click option for selecting windows for side-by-side display in Win 2K to Vista, but that's now gone from Win 7). And what about Frame X and Acrobat 10, which I don't have installed yet. Have they come to their senses? Cheers, Mike -- London, ON

recurring decimals (1 FM8 file attached)
Syed, you wrote > That method actually worked very well in certain places in my document, but I have a problem with it in a few others. Anyway, I don't seem to be able to eliminate the space _after_ that digit with the dot using the method you describe unless I am overlooking something simple? The first example above shows as "19.1 345 " i.e., a space after the 1 and the 5 - the digits that have the dots, and the second example shows as "10.999 Z". BTW, with a little bit of experimentation, I was able to change the font of the number in the equation to match the other test, so that worked our pretty well (not perfect spacing - particularly after the number with the dot - but usable). < I have similar problems positioning diacritics in Canadian Aboriginal languages. I use the Rubi ((Special->Rubi)functionality to enter the diacritics required, and then I move them into place using the alt-arrow method described. The advantage is that Frame treats the combination as a single letter. - Might not work for some of the placements you need, though. Cheers, Mike London Canada
