Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?
Hello, I sent my question to Adobe Technical Communication who were nice enough to respond. ATC indicated that: "if (and when) Adobe stops selling perpetual licenses of TECH COMM products like FrameMaker, RoboHelp etc. - we will always take care of special cases where customers need to work in an OFFLINE environment and need to activate their software over email/telephone (not Internet). Adobe customer support team would handle such cases to ensure that the customer is not stuck at any point of time." ATC also indicated that they will review the training for their sales teams as the information was inaccurate. The software activation requirement is actually the current situation with the Adobe FrameMaker where software activation *must* be performed directly on the internet, or indirectly via request/response codes. From reading the available information, the license upgrades for future versions of FrameMaker will only be available via: Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) ... so if you're not on these programmes, getting newer versions of Adobe TC products are likely to cost you more. Many thanks to everyone who responded. // Simon BUCH -- M-AIS On 22/10/2019 15:14, Simon BUCH wrote: Hello FrameUsers, My boss just received a telephone call from an Adobe licensing specialist this afternoon indicating that Adobe will be switching OFF perpetual licenses [both for new & renewal] WORLDWIDE for * Adobe Technical Communication Suite * Adobe FrameMaker * Adobe FrameMaker Publishing Server * Adobe RoboHelp * Adobe RoboHelp Server According to an "Adobe Community" posting by Amitoj SINGH [Product Manager, Adobe Technical Communication Tools]: "Customers will still be able to purchase perpetual licenses of all the above-mentioned products through Channel (Adobe authorized resellers) under Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) even after 1 July 2019. Customers who are currently enrolled for Adobe Software Assurance (ASA) or Maintenance and Support (M&S) plans for any of the above-mentioned products will continue to avail of all the benefits for these programs till the expiry date of the current contract." As the call centre licensing specialist gave the impression that the TLP and CLP programmes require the products to have access to Adobe servers. This has caused a PANIC in my office as most of my customers are located in a number of different countries, inside tightly controlled corporate and/or military grade networks that have NO access to Adobe online services. My customers require a stable, reliable publishing environment where workstation configuration is tightly controlled, safely protected from access of update servers. Does this mean that Adobe is switching to requiring ALL FrameMaker and TCS users to have access to the internet 100% of the time? Or was the Adobe licensing specialist inaccurate with the information? Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?
Unfortunately, this is essentially the kind of "licensing" and upgrade pricing policy changes that I expected some years ago when the subscription versions were released. I stopped using FM for _all new_ documents after version 12 and switched to writing all my new documents to TeX ... my needs may be different from yours, of course! And I found alternatives to other Adobe products I was using. With one exception: Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I am testing an alternative for this too. FWIW, I love the instant PDF output visual feedback I get from one of my TeX tools, so I don't use Adobe Acrobat for any TeX documents either! Now, when I bring up an old FM document for editing a new version, I "convert" it (manually) to TeX and do not look back for future versions. Because the upgrade pricing and subscription licensing approach for FrameMaker simply does not work for me (I emphasize: for me) anymore, period. As an early adopter of FrameMaker since 1988 (on a Sun 3/50), I remain disappointed by this, but it became time to move on ... like all things in life! I am still on this list more out of habit than anything else. 😊 Z -Original Message- From: Framers On Behalf Of Lin Sims Sent: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 1:20 PM To: An email list for people using Adobe FrameMaker software. Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?
I thought I remembered about this. The same rumour came up in June, and this was the information given then by Amitoj Singh: As of July 1st, 2019, the Software Assurance (ASA) and Maintenance & Support (M&S) programs were discontinued, although people who have contracts under those programs will continue to have the same support until their contract end date. However, *customers can still purchase perpetual licenses* under the Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) from Adobe and from Adobe authorized resellers. This is a link to the thread I started on the Adobe forums about this issue, with the official answer. https://community.adobe.com/t5/FrameMaker/Perpetual-Licenses-for-FrameMaker-and-TCS/m-p/10494707#M61467 He also provided an email address for those with further questions: techc...@adobe.com I haven't heard that these programs are going away, but I'm perfectly willing to ask. :) On Tue, Oct 22, 2019 at 3:47 PM Harding, Dan wrote: > If this is indeed the case (it would be nice to get something definitive > from Adobe directly, not just second-hand interpretations that are all over > the map), then I think a lot of users will be stand pat on FM2019 for a > considerable period of time, at least until it is no longer compatible with > Windows 14, or whatever version breaks it. > > -Dan > > -Original Message- > From: Framers > On Behalf Of Richard Melanson > Sent: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 2:43 PM > To: An email list for people using Adobe FrameMaker software. < > framers@lists.frameusers.com> > Subject: Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for > FrameMaker? > > Either or both of these happening "stinks" shame on Adobe. > > Adobe is discontinuing support for any type of upgrade for perpetual > licenses. > Adobe will be switching OFF perpetual licenses [both for new & renewal] > WORLDWIDE. > > > > Richard Melanson > Technical Writer|HighRes Biosolutions > T:781.932.1912x1160|rmelan...@highresbio.com > www.highresbio.com??? > > This e-mail message may contain confidential information and may not be > used by anyone but the intended recipient. This option of upgrade won't be there after some time. [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?
Hello FrameUsers, My boss just received a telephone call from an Adobe licensing specialist this afternoon indicating that Adobe will be switching OFF perpetual licenses [both for new & renewal] WORLDWIDE for * Adobe Technical Communication Suite * Adobe FrameMaker * Adobe FrameMaker Publishing Server * Adobe RoboHelp * Adobe RoboHelp Server According to an "Adobe Community" posting by Amitoj SINGH [Product Manager, Adobe Technical Communication Tools]: "Customers will still be able to purchase perpetual licenses of all the above-mentioned products through Channel (Adobe authorized resellers) under Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) even after 1 July 2019.
