Re: deleted data recovery: urgent help needed

2004-02-06 Thread gf sciacca
hello gang,

thanks a lot for the many suggestions. I've done the homework and here's a
little update. I've locked the partition to rescue and tried out the
suggested softwares. Data Rescue seems very powerful, but it left me in
doubt as it displayed the entire hierarchy correctly with names and
sizes, but the latest versions of the files were in a .Trashes folder
and when I tried to recover one file, I got only an empty folder. I blew
like this my "free trial" file rescue (limited to one file).

VirtualLab gave only file icons and types but no names then one is asked
to shell out according to the volume of rescue, but it seemed not a
sensible thing to do.

I might go with the Tech Tool Pro then, but I'll give another thought
before acting. Meanwhile I have luckily managed to rescue a few of the most
important files in a "transversal" way, so I'm no longer in pressing
emergency. Luckily these were Word files and the sequence of "Word Work
File"s accumulated during the past weeks of work right to the latest
version of the files showed up misteriously in the Trash of my OS 9
partition when I booted on to it, in search of further methods of rescue.
They were in a "rescued items" folder and gave me back the most important
files I needed. Now, that's a great built-in incremental backup tool!

Still, I would rather rescue the entire partition content. Thanks everyone
for the great help!

cheers, gianfrancoo

Any suggestion as how to recover the erased data?

1. Don't write anything to that partition until you've given up.
2. Use Tech Tools Pro to recover files. If you're lucky, they'll
appear in a recovered files folder on your desktop.

Obviously you are aware of the need to avoid writing _anything_ to the
partition where were the files to be recovered, especially the need to
recover files to another volume. One thing you can do to protect the
lost-data volume from being written to accidentally is to write-protect
it using Drive Setup. Launch DS, select the drive containing the volume
and go menu->Volume SettingsĀŠ->List of Volumes then select the volume
from the list and check the "Write protected" box.

Data Rescue has a good reputation for file recovery, though I've never
been able to use much of what it recovered from HFS+ partitions (files
mostly mixed up/scrambled.) Disk Warrior can also recover files, hold
down the option key while at its main pane and the "rebuild" button turns
into a "scavange" button. I've not used DW for this since I learned of
this ability but I've seen several very positive reports. I'd avoid using
Norton unless all other approaches fail and you are desperate. In any
case, write-protecting the volume should keep Norton from making things
worse.

hth,

Dan

There are a couple options out there. Most you pay for, but a few
have trials.

deleted data recovery: urgent help needed

2004-02-05 Thread gf sciacca
so as it happens, I've accidentally trashed the entire content of a
partition holding an ongoing project on my TiBook under X.3.2.

I've trashed it and emptied the trash by accident. One or two files
contained data I have no backup of since a about a week, meaning that a
lot of work is lost. I know I'm the culprit, I'm just trying to recover as
much as I can, if there's any chance.

I have done very little after that on the machine concerned, basically
only realising that norton "file saver" was not enabled, oh great. The
erased partition was a data only partition, no system on it, so I'm
positive I've not overwritten anything in there.

Any suggestion as how to recover the erased data?

Please CC to my address as I'm on digest

cheers, gianfranco
