I don't want to be discurraging, but it is a rather big project. At any rate here is my take for a project like that. First, you need to get the proper software, tools, and environment to build your mud server. For games like mud servers I absolutely, totally, recommend using a dedicated Linux based computer to host the mud. The most accessible, blind friendly, Linux os out there is Ubuntu 8.10. You can download the cd for free from http://www.ubuntu.com and they have a getting started wiki on sight. Also check out the Orca wiki on http://live.gnome.org/Orca which has getting started information for new blind Linux users new to Linux screen readers, magnification, etc. There are howto docs on there how to install Linux with speech and so on. Plus the Orca list is another great resource. If you were absolutely dead set on using Windows for your mud server it can be done using a Unix ssubsystem such as Cigwin on Windows Server 2003 or 2008, but it is not recommended. There are a lot of reasons why I personally say go the hole hog and put Linux on an extra PC you might have laying around to act as your mud server platform. So why use Linux instead of Windows? 1. Linux is more reliable - Windows based servers tend to crash or freeze more often than Linux installations, that generally run for weeks if not months without needing a reboot. 2. You can install and upgrade new software applications without the you need to restart the computer to complete the installation hastle Windows always gives you when installing software. That of course results in down time for a mud on Windows. 3. Better proformence - the same program, running on the same hardware (dual-boot) will tend to run faster under Linux than under Windows. Especially, when comparing a Ubuntu Linux server vs Windows Server 2008. 4. Much better networking with multi-user support - Windows Server 2003/2008 servers tend to slow down quite a bit when you hit about 100 simultaneous connections. By contrast, Ubuntu Linux is geared up to handle many connections at the same time, that is why most web servers and mud servers are Linux, not Windows based. 5. Free software - things you need like the C++ compiler, SQL server, web server, and many other software applications are free under Linux. Since the entire operating system, screen reader and all, is free it will save you money and will cost you nothing but your electric bill to run your mud server. 6. More support - stuff like the startup scripts out there are geared to a Linux installation. 7. Better tools - installing snippets is easier with patch and diff which work best under Unix (again, they work OK under Cygwin too). 8. Viruses and worms - you know most PCs these days are Windows PCs, and that is exactly what the worm/virus/trojan horse writers are targetting. With Linux you tend to be left alone most of the time. 8. Better firewalling - Linux comes with built-in firewall tools (again, I know that XP/Vista does too) which make it easier to secure your connections. I don't really want to start an operating system flame war, and I use Windows (for example to develop most of my software and like a lot of aspects of it, however for good, solid, mudding I think it is hard to pass by Linux as the mud server platform. As far as a programming language goes definitely go with C++. Linux is geared mainly for C/C++ development, and to my knolege must mud servers are written in C/C++ using the gcc compiler that comes with most Linux distributions or can be downloaded for free if not. I've heard of some mud servers written in Java, and I suppose that is ok, but my vote is for C++. Keep in mind that you will have to get into some rather advanced topics such as socket programming just to make it online playable and that isn't the funnest or easiest thing to do in C++. What you might want to do when starting out is grab a free open source mud server to practice with, find out how they handled this or that, and use it for a template

I must admit my ability to see coloured text is helping, but actually imho it's got some of the nicest roguelike features ever, in particular the examine command which gives you a curser you can wander around the screen with and look at objects around your character. The only thing that makes things quite difficult for me, and would make things a regular pest for access without use of the screen is that everything and everyone in the game moves around each time your character does, and there is absolutely no way of tracking them without using your look command to wander the hole screen. I haven't for example found been able to find the village elder at all, and only once have I found the sherrif. It would be really useful if a basic coordinate system could be added which would alert you of the relative coordinates of objects around you, specifically monsters, items, doors and stairways, also a coordinates system for when using the look command. Just my thoughts. I might well contact the dev on this, sinse compared to my nethack experience adom is incredibly accessible. Beware the Grue! However, I do need your input on something since there obviously is going to be a rather big difference in the way speech is handled with the new engine. In the current 0.4 release of MOTA the game gets DirectX and Sapi 5 support from the Windows specific engine. Since there is no Sapi 5 on Mac OS and Linux the newer Genesis engine uses wav files of pre-recorded speech to announce status messages, menus, etc rather than any OS specific TTS engine. There are several other game developers that do it this way like Draconis, GMA, and BSC so this isn't something new for accessible games. It is also just easier to do it this way when building a cross platform engine rather than trying to support Gnome-Speech, Apple Voices, and Sapi 5 with the same game engine. Which brings me to my question. I was going to have someone do the voice overs for the menus, status messages, for 0.5 but do to other commitments and scheduling our plans fell through. For the time being i am going to have to record all the messages using a TTS engine such as the ATT Voices, Scansoft Voices, Cepstral Voices, etc. If you had a choice which of the following voices do you personally prefer? ATT Crystal ATT Mike Scansoft Daniel Scansoft Emily Scansoft Jill Scansoft Karen Scansoft Lee Scansoft Samantha Scansoft Tom Other Thanks. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Dark, David could if he chose, separate the map making function from his GMA game engine and allow anyone to make maps while playing other games. For example if you have the map maker in one window and switch to a game in a second window, you could walk along a path in the game, then switch back to the map maker program and create the same path. You could even add notes or numbers inserted in the path telling you things such as went in this room, or this is the entrance to the kitchen. or trapped a monster in this room. As you are in the map maker there will be no monsters to attack you. You could for example map the corridors of Shades of doom marking what is behind each door and then when you play the game again, use the map program to guide you as to what to do. It would be like a physical walk through document but designed to match the game floor plan. As I said David could do this but I don't see it as a commercial product, so it would have to be a free program. You could start at coordinates 00 (so that they can both rise and fall into negative numbers), and move left and navigate left, right up and down with the arrows. I thought each box could have several text fields which you could tab betwene with the arrow keys and enter information about the location. Fields such as name, possible exits and additional information. This way you could create a map which you could quickly eddit while playing a gamebook or other game, and also be able to read through fairly easily, in fact up to the author, some extra functions could be added such as the ability to mark a location, read all used boxes in a current column or row (handy for reviewing down tunnels, the ability to read out marked locations etc. With the amount of text adventures, gamebooks, and even audio games which have complex maps, i think this would be something which could really helpp. I've read the artical on using pins in a pizza box, but I must confess I've never personally found that method too convenient to work in construction. I actually got this idea from playing Eamon, which has that really useful habbit in maps of giving current information, such as you are in a T intersection and I thought this could really help if a program was constructed to do it, - especially with adequate read keys. I'm thinking of submitting an idea to the developers of that one to have a feature that would allow a player to say something to Dennar or the watchmen or the like such as, Directions to Thelma's Bakery, and the NPC might respond with something like, Thelma's Bakery is located on X road, in the ... quadrant of the city. So it would still be necessary to do some travelling and searching, but you'd know where to start at least. Other than that Materia Magica's a great mud. I have been playing 2 years now and enjoy much. It is a fantasy world. It is hack and slash but there are other parts as well. You can quest to gain rewards as well as go on what they call runs. Runs are adventures in the game that often require a group of players to cooperate together to get done. I enjoy it. The player base is friendly and the ims are very receptive to making things easy for a screen reader to read. My husband is a guide on the game and helps many of the vi players who play. Alter Aeon. See http://dentinmud.org or telnet://dentinmud.org :3010 It's a midevil style hack and slash game with a farely decent player base. I've got loads of friends on there. I've been playing since May 2005. It's sort of similar to dicu based muds, but it's not dicu as it was written from scratch. One of my favorite things about it that I can't find anywhere else is that the melee combat system you can't see each fighting round. With smaug and dicu and such when you fight something you get a two second period of scilence, then you get a load of hits all at once, then it's scilent for another two seconds. Alter Aeon is just kind of continuous and seems more realistic in that aspect. Many people don't like Alter Aeon. They say it's boring, all you do is run run run, which means you go kill mobs left and right in order to get experience that you need to level with. I certainly don't feel that way. I often log in and just chat with my many friends on there. If I did want to get more interesting than that without killing mobs I could brew potions, or I could enter a player killer arena and go whoop some insert word of choice here. Speaking of player killer, which for those who are unaware, it means to go up against another human controlled character and try to kill that character. Alter Aeon is a great mud to me because player versis player isn't required on there. You can never kill another player or be killed by another one ligidimintly if you want. In order to be killable by another player or to be able tokill another player you have to enter a command. There's even a temporary one so that you can just log out and back into the game and you're no longer a player killer. Also there are player killing arenas mortal that goes into arenas can kill other players as that's the point. During temporary player killing and player killing arena, you don't have anything to lose by killing or being killed. You don't lose experience or anytyhing so you can just have a hay ride and enjoy yourself testing your abilities against all the quad 32 players who decide to come have fun with yoou. Just had a recent experience with the quad 32 thing. They killed me and several other clan members of mine a whole bunch and we finally managed to kill them, with all of us teaming them *lol*. [Audyssey] More SAPI Frustration
Hello, all, Well, I've tried a few things to get my SAPI fixed, since I'd really like to be able to use it with vipmud, but it still isn't quite right. Here's what I've tried: I've installed Jim Kitchen's winkit file. I've reinstalled the SpeechSDK5.1.exe package. I've also installed the tts as well again. Now, my SAPI-dependent programs don't freak, but they don't speak either. VipMud, however, dings at me every time it tries to speak, but doesn't speak. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to fix this? I like VipMud, and would like to use it to the max...having a separate voice for editing and incoming would be totally excellent! It is a strange file in that it doesn't say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices. Here is another fix that I was told about. Not sure if it is actually just doing the same thing or not. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should correct the control panel entries for Sapi. Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working. And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to speech engine. HTH BFN Jim Check my web site for my free blind accessible pc dos and windows games. Couldn't the multi-channel capability of sound cards be implemented to take care of the cutting-off issue? Let one player come through 1 channel, and the other through another channel?n'Coud -- From: Munawar Bijani [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 25, 2008 3:41 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] we are far behind the mainstream market in one bigaspect Hi, I think the real challenge here is not getting two input devices to control two separate entities at the same time--this is very easily done if the game is coded properly and made to accomodate very generic input from the start--rather, preventing one player from being confused by another's audio output would be difficult. For instance, if SAPI outputs some messages, unless each player uses a different voice, it would be difficult to tell whose status the engine is outputting. Even if the game uses two different voices for both players, and say if player 1 issues a status command and player 2 does the same, player 1's status would be cut off (since in real time games it would give player 1 and unfair advantage if player 2 has to wait for player 1's status to finish.) In contrast, in visual games, sound is not that big of a deal, and splitting the screen into player 1 and player 2 areas is not difficult to do--this is how the Nintendo 64 did it with 007: Golden Eye when you initiated multiplayer mode; which made it easy to hook up four controllers at the same time and play without any problems. The audio equivalent of this, I would think, is to have the user install two sound cards, and both players wear headsets plugged into either card. Player 1's sound output would come out of card 1, and likewise for player 2. However, the question then arises as to whether the user is willing to spend the money to buy two cards (or one card, since the computer most likely already has one sound card) which will cost about $100, on top of the extra keyboard or joystick for a second input device, on top of the price of the game, which would probably be $30.00 minimum. As a developer, all this has to be factored in and you get to your final answer of is it worth it to implement this technology? Based on how the market currently is, probably not. Munawar A. There's one at the Terraformers web site; if you look through the FAQ, there's a walkthrough that goes through the second level. I hadn't noticed it being ring shaped before, but now that you mension it, it kind of does make sense. I've got one of the computer parts already (I finally figured out I could sort of fudge and go find the original file containing the sound flower, then listen to it outside of the game. From there it was pretty simple to match the tones--twice in a row just about.
