Has anyone used one under Gentoo (x86) and how good is it? If you're referring to the 24 model - 2405FPW, yes I'm running on an amd64 under Gentoo. For one, you'll need a Gfx card that can drive a digital display at 1920x1200. Most inexpensive Gfx cards have a high end that stops at 1600x1200. Plus, you'll need a mode line for any resolution above 1280x1024 on most Gfx cards, though some laptops will work above that without a mode line. Regardless, this mode line work - Modeline 1920x1200 154.0 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync And this Modes line needs to added to the Display section - Modes 1920x1200 1600x1200 1400x1050 1280x1024 800x600 640x480 fwiw - I'm using an Nvidia 6600 Gfx card to drive the panel. It's great on text and 3D games - well, ut2004. I haven't run any other games seriously. As to watching DVDs or live video feeds, it's very good in a window, but a bit flat looking at full screen. Perhaps because it's so bright and I'm running the brightness at 0. But backing up from it to about 6 ft and it's mostly ok at full screen DVD playing. I've seen better, but not at this price and resolution. btw - Dell has it on sale for US$830 this weekend. My other complaint is Dell's color preset - it's non standard. Instead of listing preset color temperatures - 5500, 6500, 7000, they use PC standard, Mac standard, Blue, and Red. Without going through a setup procedure, it's hard to figure which corresponds closest to 6500, the NTSC color balance standard for video. Bob - -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I got a great deal on it by watching hot-deals.org everyday until there was a sale and an Internet coupon. I upgraded from a 19 nonflat CRT. The 2005FPW is the one I'm considering. Dell has 20% off til Jan 18. Question: Does the screen have a matt finish or glossy. I dislike that etched matt finish; I think it decreases the brightness and sharpness. I certainly don't regret buying it at all. I'd just recommend thinking through what kind of apps you regularly use, and how they'd be affected running at 1680x1050. For me, the main thing I wanted was the ability to run a terminal right next to Firefox without resorting to a tiny resolution. And now I have that :) I have a LinuxCertified laptop with a 17 widescreen at 1680x1050. I like it and haven't noticed any problems. Sounds great! Thanks a lot. I got a great deal on it by watching hot-deals.org everyday until there was a sale and an Internet coupon. I upgraded from a 19 nonflat CRT. The monitor itself is great; no complaints. Works perfectly with my hardware (Vid card = nVidia ti4200 AGP). FYI, here's the modeline I use: Modeline 1680x1050 119.0 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -hsync +vsync The only other thing to look out for is font setup. I had to spend a bit of time reading up how to get my fonts to look good. It wasn't hard, as there's tons of documentation out there that describes getting nice fonts in X. Having said that, in hindsite, I think I'd prefer to have *two* 20 4:3 LCDs running side by side (rather than one widescreen). Just my personal opinion, but that goofy resolution the 2005FPW uses (1680x1050) is kind of awkward---any interesting desktop background you find will either need to be stretched, cropped or tiled. I certainly don't regret buying it at all. I'd just recommend thinking through what kind of apps you regularly use, and how they'd be affected running at 1680x1050. He runs Windows, and I didn't look at it too long, but that thing is MASSIVE. Makes mine look tiny. But for the price, you could buy two of the one I have!
