as in todays ndtv.com news.

Thursday, October 10, 2002 (Kolkata):

Monica Besra, the tribal woman claiming to have been healed of abdominal
tumour at the intercession of Mother Teresa, continues to maintain it was a
miracle, oblivious of the controversy over her contention.

Her reiteration came when a government official spoke to her at her
residence in Nakore village in South Dinajpur district.

Joint BDO of Harirampur Block in North Bengal Arun Kumar Sengupta said that
during the interview, Monica said her husband Selku Murmu took her to a
local doctor in 1988, a year after Mother's death, when she complained of
persistent headaches and stomach aches.

As her problems continued, she was admitted for a month to the Balurghat
Hospital the same year. This was followed by treatment at the Malda Sadar
Hospital and a subsequent three-day stay at a nearby nursing home.

The cost of treatment at Malda, including nursing home charges, worked up to
around Rs 7,000.

With the Vatican accepting the cure as a miracle, easing Mother's movement
towards beatification, doctors who treated Monica at Balurghat maintained
that her tumour was cured by medical treatment.

Monica told Sengupta that after returning home from Malda, her problems
resurfaced and she was then taken to the MC hospital at Potiram near the
district headquarter of Balurghat.

MC doctors later took her to Balurghat Hospital where an ultra sonography
spotted a tumour in her abdomen. At this, the doctors at the MC mission
advised her to undergo surgery at either the North Bengal Medical College
and Hospital (NBMCH), Siliguri, or at Kolkata.

She was accordingly examined by five doctors at NBMCH and though her tumour
had become as large as a "football", she could not be operated upon as she
was physically weak. The doctors advised her to have nutritious food and
come back after three months for surgery, Monica told the Joint BDO.

According to Monica, on September 5, 1998, the first anniversary of Mother's
death, she was taken by the MC sisters to a prayer hall at the Potiram
mission centre where a locket bearing Mother's picture was placed on her
neck and a black string tied around her swollen abdomen.

Monica claimed that at the hall, she was 'pierced' by a dazzling ray of
light emanating from a picture of Mother, though others present at the hall
failed to see it.

That night, she slept soundly after a long time and felt a deep sense of
relief. Next morning, she found the swelling had disappeared, Monica told
the officer. (PTI)

State soil good for hybrid rice
---
A progressive farmer, Mr Prakash Balli, has grown hybrid rice
called Sahyadri on trial basis in his fields covering over 2000 sq mt of land.
It has proved boon to the farmer and areas as it has shown tremendous
growth as per the expectations of the rice scientists who conducted
a study trip to these fields and areas on Thursday.Mr Balli was shocked
to find the yield in such a good condition and perfect condition in these
dwindling monsoon. He said there was a fear lingering at the back of his brain
as the monsoon played truant with most farmers in Goa. He also said
he never expected the yield would be in such a perfect manner
and better then the Jyoti.

He also said he used less manure and more cow dung and compost or organic,
depending upon the seasonal rains. He said if this rice is cultivated in Goa,
our tiny state will be a self-sufficient state in rice and government
should try
to encourage this type of rice in Goa. He further said a kg of seed will give
over 250 kg yield. But there is no milling facility in Goa for this kind of
rice
as it requires rubber mill and there are no rubber mills in Goa besides
nagging labour problems.

He was critical about the functioning of the ministry and said there is more
paper work than real work which consumes lot of time, money and labour.
He also said, there is urgent need to have good coordination among
the ministries concerned and departments involved and said this is only way
to find wrinkle free face of a Goan farmer. He said you can glitter on my face
simply because my wife and children even after graduating from colleges
have worked in the fields. He said government should make provisions
to rid the farmers' problems.

The former deputy speaker of Goa, Mr Ulhas Asnodkar, has also tried
this hybrid rice and is quite happy to see the yield. He is of the view that
if government can make provision of water and other facilities it is fine.

The Director of Rice Research, Rajendra Nagar Hyderabad, Mr Ilyas Ahmad
and Mr Viraktamath were also present on the sites and stated that this is a
UNDP funded programme to promote better rice yield. They are of the view
that if Goan farmers take up this rice for cultivation then the deficit of
30,000
tonnes of Goan rice would be solved in no time, besides Goa stands
good chances as there is lot of potentials in Goan soil.

MEET THE TWO FRIENDS WHO VISITED INDIA ON HOLIDAY AND BECAME SO ENAMOURED
WITH THE COUNTRY THEY DECIDED TO SET UP SHOP THERE

EVERYONE dreams of quitting the rat race when they're on holiday. But most
simply return to work the next Monday and get on with their lives. But one
Warwickshire woman has turned her dream into a reality. PAULA HALL reports

AS a civil servant on a management training course, Sue Watkins was asked to
draw up a vision of where she wanted to be in five years time.

Other delegates came up with bigger houses and cars, children and
promotions.

Sue struggled. Then, in response to the growing frustration of the course
leader, she drew a beach with palm trees, a huge sun, a large garden and a
boat.

"Everyone was quite dismissive of it," she remembers. "I filed the notes
away and there they stayed, forgotten."

She rediscovered the picture from the past some years later as she cleared
her desk in England for the last time - to start a new life in the exotic
state of Goa on the west coast of India.

The only thing she doesn't now have is the boat.

Sue, originally from Nuneaton, set up the holiday villa company, Lazydays in
Goa, with her friend and colleague Linda Guthrie, when the lives of both
civil servants changed forever following a winter break in February 1992.

They went to Goa, found an idyllic sunny paradise, and fell in love with the
place.

It was to be a holiday romance which didn't end on their return home.

Goa had reminded Sue of the Algarve in Portugal in the early 70s, when it
was just waking up to tourism.

"When we were in Goa we said 'wouldn't it be nice if we could get a cup of
tea and a cake and maybe a sun lounger'.

"Then the next year when we returned for a holiday all these things had
started to happen. We were sat there going 'but that was our idea'."

A third holiday followed. Colleagues told them to "stop talking about it, go
and do it".

Sue, a Training and Enterprise Council manager in Sheffield, seized her
chance to leave during a reorganisation of the service - so she sold her
terraced home and moved to Goa.

"I didn't feel brave at the time," says the former pupil of Kenilworth
Grammar School and Higham Lane High School in Nuneaton. "I just felt it was
the right thing to do."

Linda joined her in Goa on eight months leave from work and their intention
was to set up a hotel, but they struggled to find the right site.

When Sue drove Linda back to the airport at the end of her stay, they were
no closer to success.

Then as Linda was checking in - literally in the last 10 minutes of her
eight-month visit - they hit on the idea of renting out villas instead. And
over the last seven seasons the company has grown from managing three
properties to about 30.

Now Linda, who is originally from Wolverhampton, splits her time between Goa
and the UK, returning each year to avoid the monsoon rains, while Sue is
permanently resident in a local village, with her Goan partner and their
three dogs.

She has a century-old detached cottage with terracotta tiles, built in
Portuguese colonial times, with a big garden full of exotic fruit trees.

And she has no regrets.

"It's a ten minute walk from the village to the beach, along little pathways
through coconut trees. And I live just under a hill with nice walks for the
dogs and natural spring water," she says.

The company meanwhile is going from strength to strength.

It has a sales office in Bournemouth and a base in Goa, where the team
includes housekeepers, an electrician, plumber and gardener, and is
currently preparing for the busiest time, the sunshine season from October
to April.

The aim is to offer an alternative to the usual hotel holidays.

Rather than sell endless trips at a welcome meeting they prefer to simply
let their guests, who tend to be more independent travellers, get on with
their own lives. "We just say if you want us we're at the end of the phone,"
says Sue.

It is a different world of work to the one Linda and Sue left behind.

Each day Sue sets out with a list of jobs, knowing she might only achieve
two of them through the heat of the day. Going to the bank alone can write
off a whole morning.

On the day we speak Sue and Linda, who are both in their mid 40s, have spent
a couple of hours at a house being renovated by a man who wants them to let
it as a villa.

"It was a plea

India Today October 14 issue (www.indiatoday.com) has an article on
Indians living abroad, which says, among other things

"India abroad means a 20-million, $400-billion strong
community that is getting richer and more powerful.
 It can help transform India"

But, it also quotes noted writer of Indian origin and Nobel Prize-winning
author Sir Vidiadhar Naipaul saying about migrants, "After two or three
generations, traditions cannot be maintained. They will strictly not be
Indian people... As migrants generatlly adapt there is really no idea left
of India, no profound idea of India, beyond some sentimental attachment."

[Incidentally, the Goan community, which has long been into migration,
perhaps more than people from most other Indian states, has been
criticised in the past for getting 'denationalised'. Now, the same is
something other people of Indian origin are themselves admitting.]

In terms of listing some options, India Today suggests:

* Giving PIOs (persons of Indian origin, non-passport holders) and NRIs
(non-resident Indians, basically passport holders) a voice in
India. "Nominate five of them to the Rajya Sabha (upper house of
parliament). This will add value and opinion without skewing the electoral
system."

* Establishing a department or ministry exclusively to PIO-NRI
affairs. (Wonder what happened to Goa's attempt...)

* Hassle-free travel helps. What helps equally is visa-free travel.

* PIOs and NRIs should be given complete freedom to invest in any industry
and freely repatriate profits.

* PIOs outside South Asia should be freely offered dual citizenship. The
ambit of dual citizenship should be extended beyond North America and
Europe.

It says: "Where government has failed, overseas Indian money has stepped
in, transforming numerous villages in Gujarat, Punjab and Kerala into
places where sanitation, safe drinking water, primary education, health
care and electricity are no longer an issue."

Goa missed the list. Perhaps indicates the low-visibility of non-residents
from here, or the inability/unwillingness to highlight their contribution
in local quarters. After all, Goa had a higher economic set of indicators
even at the fag end of colonial rule -- compared to neighbouring and other
areas in India. These were times when tourism was not even thought off,
and mining was barely a decade or less old... and the bloated bureaucracy
was not a reality. But migration's economic impact has not been adequately
studied or acknowledged. -FN

estrangeiro. Em questão está o site governamental inglês

Hi Wilson,

Yes there is a main Goan Association in Portugal with one of the best club
houses I have ever seen offered by the Municipality of Lisbon. A must see
(!!) if you are visiting Lisbon.

The name is - Casa de Goa - and it is the association not only of Goans
but also of those from Damao and Diu.

The web site is:

http://www.goacom.com/casa-de-goa

Unfortunately, the main language of the web site is Portuguese but there are
a few pages translated to English.

It is estimated that there are about 100,000 people of Goan origin residing
in Portugal.
The Hindu population (not necessarily from Goa but from all over India) is
also considerable and, in general, these are people who came from the
Portuguese colonies of Africa and chose to live in Portugal after the
independence of those colonies in 1975.

Emigration from Goa to Portugal is also increasing exponentially due to the
Portuguese Nationality Law which allows people born in the old Estado da
India Portuguesa to retain their Portuguese Citizenship, which they had when
they were born (if born before 1961).

Best regards,
Paulo Colaco Dias.

If the above is meant to be some sort of a counterpoint to the miracle
story, I would like to point out that the sisters are silent because
they are under strict orders from their superiors in the Church
hierarchy, as is clear from the remarks of Bishop Alphonsus D'Souza in
the following excerpt from a report in "The Observer" published on
August 19 last year. It is clear from this excerpt that the sisters
are not just afraid of others contradicting their account, but in fact
afraid of contradicting each other's accounts. "That would spoil
things", the Bishop said.

Cheers,

Santosh

MOTHER TERESA'S 'MIRACLE'

A 34,000-page report is proposing sainthood but examination of just
one 'cure' throws up doubts

By Luke Harding in Raiganj and Philip Willan in Rome

Sunday August 19, 2001

Excerpted from THE OBSERVER

"They have been given strict orders not to talk about it," Raiganj's
Bishop Alphonsus D'Souza said yesterday. "Obviously what happened is
an objective-miracle. But the sisters don't want to give different
versions as that would spoil things."

The witness statements given by the sisters also reveal several
inconsistencies. Mrs Besra, who is about 30, claims she was being
given medicine only for pain relief, but the sisters confirm she was
also treated for TB. Before the 'miracle', Mrs Besra was taken to no

Mother

"Her children rise up and call her blessed..." (Proverbs 31:28)

She dreamed of you from the time he was a little boy cradling a toy car in
his arms.
She always saw you playing around the little cottage in his childhood
dreams.
She carried you in her body and you made her sick every morning for weeks
and weeks.
She bore you into the world through intense pain but when she heard you cry
and saw your wrinkled face she forgot all about it and wept tears of joy.

She fed you at her breast and her whole world revolved around you.
She stole into your room at night just to watch you sleep and she was sure
you were the most beautiful child on earth.
She set up through the night to bathe away the fever and at breakfast your
dad said; "Sleep well, honey?" oblivious to the all-night vigil.
She somehow always knew when you needed her, even in the middle of the
night, and she came to your room and changed your bedding and made sure you
were warm and dry.

She covered your ears and gave you your coat and checked your homework and
made you practice the piano.
She nagged you to brush your teeth with words of wisdom like; "Be true to
your teeth or they will be false to you."
She changed your diaper and cleaned up when you were sick and washed
underwear no one else would touch without a chemical suit
She made sure you had the drumstick and your dad had the breast and acted
like she preferred the wings. Her oatmeal cookies made you forget the
beating you took from the neighborhood bully.

She listened to you and didn't laugh when others would have mocked you.
She believed in you when you didn't believe in yourself and prayed for you
even when you didn't think you needed it.
She made you think you could do things you were sure you couldn't do.
She was tough enough to call your bluff and discipline you and give you a
sense of
boundaries and the security that comes with it.
She was always waiting when you came in late. When you complained about it,
she pretended to be asleep the way you always did when you wanted her to
carry you in from the car after a long trip.

She read the Bible to you and read the Bible in front of you and did what
mothers have to do to make sure the family is faithful in church.
She made your dad a much better man than he ever would have been without
her.

She mended clothes as a labor of love and it broke her heart to see how
quickly you grew out of them.
She washed mountains of dishes and truckloads of laundry. she put up food on
the hottest summer days and didn't complain.

Her most sincere prayers were the ones she sent heavenward in gratitude for
you. She filled your home with fragrance and beauty and music. The smell or
her perfume and fresh-cut flowers, bacon for breakfast and Sunday roast.

Her eyes were bright and happy and full of life.
She wept though, wept and worried a thousand times for you when no one ever
knew.

She rose early on holidays so you could enjoy a festive meal and an enduring
memory.
She planned for days and worked for hours so that in a few minutes you could
gulp it down and go watch football. You didn't always thank her or help her
with the dishes, but those meals have been a cherished memory for years.

She baked you special treats just to watch you eat them.
Something inside made her happier the more you ate.
She wore old dresses so you could have a new.
She skipped vacations and second honeymoons so you could go to camp.
She limited expenses for her hobbies so you could get your band instrument.

She didn't abandon the family when your dad was insensitive to her needs.
She took the blame for your failures and stood back and let your dad have
the glory for your successes.

And having done all these things and a thousand others that make mother a
sacred word, she still felt she wasn't the mother she should have been.

Have a nice day!
Eddie

World Tourism Day

World tourism day will be celebrated on September 27.
Could it be possible for the Government of India tourist office at Panaji
to remove the wild bushes and grass covering the tourism hoarding next to it.
The Goa tourism department may also do the same thing for the tourism boards
at Patto bridge and at various locations at Ribandar and Old Goa road to
enable
the travellers to read the matter displayed on them.

In case it is not possible for the tourism department to repair the
dilapidated
information boards at Kavlem, Mangueshi and other locations and to provide
domes
with bulbs on the tops of the poles standing on the Mandovi Promenade at
Panaji,
the same may be removed before September 27 so as to keep the location clean.

On the world tourism day, certificates of appreciation may be awarded
to the oldest tourist taxi owner/driver, approved tourist guide and others
in recognition of their contribution towards promotion of tourism in Goa.

Not Our Responsibility

IN his letter titled 'World Tourism Day' (LP, September 23), B G Khandeparkar
takes up the issue of removal of wild bushes and grass covering the tourism
hoarding
next to the Government of India Tourist office at Panaji.

Being the assistant director of the tourist office, I wish to inform the
public
that the office at Panaji is housed in rented premises in the Comunidade
building.
The overall maintenance, cleanliness (periodic or otherwise) is the sole
discretion
of the administrator of comunidades of the central zone.

We have taken up the issue of maintenance and cleanliness in the past
with various administrators who had been posted from time to time.
We were told that the comunidade does not have the funds to maintain
and repair the building.

We have now taken it upon ourselves to obtain a no-objection certificate
for external cleanliness, refurbishment and restoration of our part of the
building
that is still awaited from the administrator of the comunidades of central
zone.

>From ABC news:

Buck Wolf is entertainment producer at ABCNEWS.com.

Oct. 8 — Did you hear the one about the world's
greatest joke? It's not funny.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

'If That's the Best Joke …'

No kidding — last week British scientists announced
they had found the world's greatest joke, and this
wasn't just idle chatter around the Bunsen burner.
The British Association for the Advancement of Science
examined some 40,000 jokes submitted over the Internet
from 70 countries.

After a year of government-financed research, Richard
Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire told the
wisecrack that he claims has the best chance of
working with any audience around the world.

If you've heard it already, don't spoil the punch
line:

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them
collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his
eyes are glazed. The other man pulls out his phone and
calls emergency services and gasps to the operator:
"My friend is dead! What can I do?"

The operator in a calm, soothing voice replies: "Take
it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's
dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard.

Back on the phone, the hunter says, "OK, now what?"

Did you laugh? I didn't, nor did any of the working
comics and comedy writers I contacted. In fact, the
only thing British scientists may have conclusively
proven is that maybe they really are eggheads.

‘If That’s the Best Joke …’

"If that's the best joke in the world, then I've never
had a face-lift," says veteran comic Phyllis Diller,
85, who retired from live performances last year.

Back in the 1950s, Diller became one of the first
full-time female stage comics.

"Think of me as a sex symbol for men who don't give a
damn," she'd tell audiences in her heyday — back when
Bob Hope specials and Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts
were the hottest thing on TV.

"I'm an old lady. Few things still shock me," Diller
says. "But what kind of scientist thinks he can
explain laughter?

"I can think of a disease or two that might be more
worthy of a government research grant. Can't you?"

Still, if Wiseman wants to get into the giggle
business, he should learn the first rule: Comedy is
not pretty, especially if you think you're funny and
you're not.

So here's what some real comedians think of Wiseman's
research:

Comics Roast Egghead

"I'd have to politely suggest to Dr. Wiseman that he
stick to his day job … We politely refer to some guys
as a N.G.N.A — Nice Guy, No Act."
— Eddie Brill, booker for comedians, Late Show With
David Letterman

"If the British are spending money on this, God knows
what else they're spending it on … The joke isn't
funny. It isn't even in the ballpark of funny. 'Two
Jews walk into a bar without a punch line' is
funnier."

— Lewis Black, commentator, The Daily Show on Comedy
Central

"We now know why there are no rocket scientists — or
any scientists, for that matter — on Hollywood
Squares."
— Dom DeLuise, who says the hardest part of working on
Hollywood Squares is "squeezing your butt into those
little spaces."

"This is a joke about a man who kills his friend. The
really funny thing is that this joke wouldn't work if
the two hunters were women. Now, I wish science could
explain that."
— Suzie Essman, who's appearing this week in HBO's
Curb Your Enthusiasm and Comedy Central's Crank
Yankers

"That joke is such a bomb, the government is
threatening to use it against Iraq."
— Jeff Gurian, comedy writer for Friars Club Roasts,
Joan Rivers, and Rodney Dangerfield

"I could make that joke funny, but only if I used
obscenities every three words."
— Gilbert Gottfried, stand-up comic and voice of the
AFLAK duck in TV commercials

"Sure, Dr. Wiseman can find the funniest joke, but can
he screw in a light bulb? I hear the second funniest
joke is his resume."
— Malcolm Kuschner, speechwriter, author of Public
Speaking for Dummies

"What's funny is that hunters don't carry cell phones.
That's a stupid joke! And it's long!"
— Mario Cantone, stand-up comic who appears regularly
on HBO's Sex and the City as Anthony, Charlotte's
frenetic gay friend

"Scientists have once again proven they are the utmost
boring people on earth."
— Carol Montgomery, Las Vegas-based comic

"Whoever told that joke was wasting his breath … and
that was no great loss, either."
— Groucho Marx interpreter Frank Ferrante, imagining
what Groucho would say

"This study was conducted on the Internet … I don't
believe anything on the Internet. If you're reading my

Hats off to her sisters for following that advice.
Nothing has contradicted their account of events.

Re: [Goanet] 09 OCT: GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS

2002-10-09 Thread EdgarStmartins

Those who feel that India is a country where human rights of its own and world citizens are considered, I would like to draw the attention that India has since its inception followed a very dubious role. Under apartheid, India was very vocal against the racists in South Africa. Besides having a large Indian presence there they surreptiously dealt with the South Africa importing vital metals and other goods while at the same time boycotting the country. It was a sham. Today, India reaps huge benefits from the S.A. economy and is respected as a leader of the Third World.

In the Middle East, we befriend the Arabs who employ vast numbers of our citizens. We import their oil and I am certain that some Iraqi Oil finds its way to India clandestinely. We ignore for our own benefit the Human Rights of the Palestinians who are undergoing opression (worse than that experienced by Blacks in SA during colonial domination). We cannot have our cake and eat it.

India has been on very friendly terms with Israel and this yearly influx of its citizens (many of who live on the coastal belt of Goa smoking a flagrant weed that puts them in a daze) ought not to be tolerated in the interest of boosting our tourist industry. It appears that the Goa and Indian Government like harlots will seek to bolster its economy  by immoral means - just like is done in a brothel.

I would like to see India put a ban on Israeli tourists who are barred from most countries where they can travel cheaply.

Mervyn,

Whatever the etiquettes, the British Royal family still thinks that
it owns the people! The sun has long set on the British Empire.
I am confused about countries like Canada and Australia, wanting to
retain the Queen as their Head of State! I am glad India rid itself of
the monarchy in 1950.

In the US, any President or Presidential candidate simply loves to
shake any hand that comes his/her way. Just see how powerful a figure
an American President is, as compared to the Queen of England! I felt
sorry for that 9 year old. I remember how I used to go to a cricket
match, hoping to shake the hands of my cricket idols. It was just a
matter of pride to tell your friends about who you shook hands with!

Bengal minister wants probe into Mother Teresa miracle

By Krittivas Mukherjee, Indo-Asian News Service

Kolkata, Oct 9 (IANS) A West Bengal minister has demanded an investigation
into a miracle attributed to Mother Teresa that has strengthened her case
for sainthood.

The Vatican last week recognised as a miracle the reported curing of an
abdominal tumour on a tribal woman from West Bengal, saying it paved the way
for the founder of the Missionaries of Charity to be beatified, which would
take her a step closer to sainthood.

But a West Bengal minister and several rationalists in the state are
sceptical of the miracle attributed to the Albanian-born nun who made India
her home.

Kanti Ganguly, the minister in charge of the Sunderbans mangrove forest
area, has called for a health department probe.

"If the health department thinks there is a case for forgery and cheating,
the law should take its course. This is a matter that only the health
ministry can deal with," Ganguly told IANS.

Rationalists are condemning the talk of a miracle by Mother Teresa, who
spent her life serving the poor and the dying across the globe from the
Kolkata-based headquarters of her order, the Missionaries of Charity.

Even doctors who attended the patient supposedly cured by Mother Teresa's
miracle have challenged the church, saying Monica Besra -- a tribal woman
from northern West Bengal -- was treated with medication.

Former Marxist health minister Partho De too said medicine and not a miracle
cured Besra, a mother of two.

"She received treatment at the Balurghat hospital and recovered after taking
medicines. There should not be any talk of miracle," he said.

Mazur Murshed, chief of the hospital, also dismissed claims of a miracle and
said Besra was suffering from tubercular meningitis and had developed an
ovarian tumour, which was cured with medication.

Besra's case is among hundreds of such miracles that Mother Teresa had been
credited with performing.

A miracle is required along with testimonials to a holy life for a person to
be beatified by the church. Upon confirmation of a second miracle, the
person can be declared a saint.

The process consists of three steps: veneration, beatification and
canonisation, or sainthood.

A medical miracle, to be accepted by the church, has to be vetted by a
doctor as beyond the comprehension of medical science. The Vatican's
Congregation for the Causes of Saints said last week that the Besra case was
one such instance.

Rationalists say Mother Teresa was a saint no doubt, but not for her
supposed miracles.

"She is a saint for her selfless service to mankind. Let that not be smudged
by false claims of miracles," Prabir Ghosh, general secretary of the Science
and Rationalist Association of India, told IANS.

The rationalists' claim has been bolstered by the fact that a Salesian
priest, Fr. A.C. Jose, considered an authority on canonisation laws, has
said "the whole process of the miracle should be examined again to protect
the reputation of the church".

He said here Tuesday night that the review should be carried out because the
Pope had not yet signed the decree of Mother Teresa's beatification.

The church admits that Mother Teresa's cause for sainthood was
"extraordinary," and it thus made certain exceptions like allowing the
sainthood process to start only about a year after her death. Usually, the
process begins five years after the candidate's death.

Mother Teresa is the 14th person from India to be considered for sainthood.
Earlier, Thomas of Tamil Nadu, Francis Xavier of Goa, John D'Britto of Tamil
Nadu and Gonzalo Gracia of Maharashtra had been anointed saints. Five people
have been beatified but await sainthood while four had passed the first
stage of veneration.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August
26, 1910. She came to Calcutta, now Kolkata, on January 6, 1929. Her life
was transformed after hearing a "call" to serve the ailing humanity while on
her way to Darjeeling on September 10, 1946.

She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1949, a year after which it
received the church's approval.

Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died on September
5, 1997, and kings, queens and heads of states attended her funeral here.

The Goa Agenda is a Strategy Retreat designed to catalyse the focus on new
and emergent applications and synergies within the industry. It will help
industry leaders to deliberate on

The information needs of society
The markets that cater to these societal needs
The SWOT of the IT industry
The directions for the IT industry

The Goa Agenda will have more than one hundred and fifty of India's
brightest minds in attendance. With an average of thirty years of leadership
in government, public institutions and the corporate sector behind them, it
will be the largest aggregation of leadership experience gathered in one
room in the country. It is an unparalleled opportunity to collect insights
from our country's real leaders on the issues that can change the destiny of
our nation and to participate in a discussion of the roles and
responsibilities that society can allocate to technology and how technology
can prepare to deliver on its promise. The Goa Agenda is being organized by
the Goa Confederation of Commerce and Industry and will be held on December

Elderly need more attention: study
-
BY FREDERICK NORONHA

Goa's population is steadily growing grey, but few in Goa are spending time
to think about creative solutions to this 'problem', a team of researchers
who undertook a study of the same have said.

"We believe the community's response has been far from imaginative or humane.
The Goa government has recently come up with the Dayanand Niradhar Yojana
Scheme for the elderly poor a very welcome measure but hardly adequate
to respond to the larger and lasting phenomenon of a quickly greying
population,"
three researchers who undertook the study opined.

This project was initiated at the end of 1999 and took about two and a half
years
to complete. Prof Isabel Santa Rita Vas, Dr Zinia da Silva and Dr Fatima
da Silva Gracias undertook the study.

Their study is called 'Age and wisdom undervalued An inquiry into the social
process of aging in Goa at the turn of Third Millennium'. It was conducted
through the recently set-up Goa-based Research Institute for Women.
One stark finding was that many of the individuals and families met
during the study viewed aging not as a phase of life, with inherent strengths
and weaknesses, but generally as "a real problem today".

Few attempts have so far been made to respond to this 'problem' creatively,
and prevent it from escalating, the researchers said. One widely held opinion
they encountered was that there ought to be simply many more
'homes for the aged' with better facilities for those who can pay.

"This seems to be as far as many people have gone in being mindful of
aging...,"
remarked the researchers. Does aging impact Goa's main religious communities
differently? It does. Lower-income residents of the 'homes' are represented
in fairly
equal numbers. In the case of the middle-income group however, larger numbers
of the minority Catholic men and women find themselves in homes.
Perhaps this is because more Catholic younger family members have emigrated
for employment, and unlike their Hindu counterparts, the joint-family system
which serves as a support network to the elderly has broken down earlier
among Catholics, the researchers suggest.

"Till very recently, many members of the Hindu `upper class' were not willing
to move to a `home' housing residents of other communities and castes,"
said the researchers.

But the Sneha Sadan 'home' at Betora, in Ponda taluka, which houses
an almost entirely Hindu middle-income population, was found
by the researchers to be the best run they came across in the State.

"On the other hand, various Catholic institutions and religious bodies have
taken
the initiative to run `homes' to house the very poor and homeless, as well as
many others from higher income groups. But, a majority of these institutions
suffer from constraints of funds," found the researchers.

State-run 'home' visited housing both Hindus and Catholics was found
to be the most dismal in terms of facilities or atmosphere.

Surprisingly, although a majority of Muslims in Goa do not fall into the
upper-income bracket, there were hardly any senior residents in
retirement homes.

BARDEZ TOPS: Indications suggest that Bardez families find it difficult
to cope with their aged within the ambit of their own homes. Incidentally,
the coastal Bardez taluka has the largest number of 'homes', 17 ;
Salcete comes next, with 8; Tiswadi or Ilhas has 7, Quepem 1 and Ponda 1.

"Bardez has the highest number of homes probably because of large number
of out migration over the last century," researcher and historian
Dr Fatima Gracias said.

Women are in a majority in these homes. In a State run home for instance
out of 73 residents about 46 were women.

Has society done enough for its elderly?Far from it. Researchers argued
that Goa
needs a "mindful and creative response from individuals, families,
local organizations, and the State".

In a state with a growing greying population, this would mean comprehensive
health services, institutional mechanisms for old age security,
micro-credit initiatives
for the enterprising elderly, and other local support services.

Aging patterns in Goa are shifting from what was noticed earlier.
