A Goan Catholic's way of thinking and practice matches a Hindu's, states Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Catholics in Goa are culturally Hindu and India is a Hindu nation in the cultural sense, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said. India is a Hindu nation in the cultural sense. A Catholic in Goa is also Hindu culturally because his practices don't match with Catholics in Brazil except in the religious aspect, a Goan Catholic's way of thinking and practice matches a Hindu's, Parrikar said in an interview to New York Times' India blog published Wednesday. Parrikar heads a state where the Catholic population is just under 30 percent of its 1.5 million population. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded an unprecedented eight Catholic candidates out of the 24 assembly seats the party contested. The 57-year-old chief minister said he was a perfect Hindu but added that it was his personal faith and that it has nothing to do with government. Parrikar took pains to distinguish Hindu as a cultural rather than a religious term. I am not the Hindu nationalist as understood by some TV media - not one who will take out a sword and kill a Muslim. According to me, that is not Hindu behaviour at all. Hindus don't attack anyone, they only do so for self-defence - that is our history, said Parrikar, seen as a critical quantum in BJP's prime minister-in-waiting candidate Narendra Modi's think tank. He was also one of the leading candidates for the post of party president some years back and headed the BJP's innovation cell. The chief minister is a former Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumnus and is known for his hands-on style of governance. This is his third stint as chief minister of the state. ends -- -- Mayabhushan Nagvenkar 1392, Anjuna, Bardez, Goa pin code 403509 # 7350131007 h http://www.goastreets.comttp://www.penpricks.blogspot.com h http://www.goastreets.com/ttp://www.ardh-satya.blogspot.com

[Goanet] Tribute to all my teachers
Tribute to my Teachers Happy teachers day There are many teachers both formal and informal, who had profound influence on my personality, growth, development. Some are no more, but they live in my heart and mind , a permanent monument. I expressed my sincere regards to them, when they walked on this earth. They shaped me, built me,carved me, moulded me, guided me, acknowledged my weakness and accentuated my strengths and made me what ever I am to day. I owe all of them, my gratitude, as I ruminate over their memories. I like many others have taken their advice, love and respect for granted, Some of them were too polite to be praised, acknowledged and considered it their obligation and duty towards me They have been tower of courage and encouragement, motivating me to walk the difficult part I fondly remember my teachers and have pleasant memories of their association and deep concern and belief in my abilities 'If a teacher and God were standing in front of me, I would bow down to the teacher , who guided me to HIM Always fondly remembered, but never forgotten Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] 1984 anti-Sikh riots: US court summons for Sonia Gandhi
WASHINGTON: Respectful of her privacy, the media may have given Sonia Gandhi a wide berth on her private trip to the US for medical treatment, but a Sikh group wants to serve court summons on the Congress president for shielding party officials allegedly involved in the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The US-based rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) had hired a process service company to track down Gandhi, who is currently believed to be in the US for medical check-up, in order to serve on her summons issued by the US Eastern District Court of New York in connection with a civil action case. In a lawsuit resulting in the September 3 summons, SFJ and victims are seeking compensatory and punitive damages against Gandhi for her role in shielding and protecting Union Cabinet minister Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tytler and other Congress leaders from being prosecuted for their crimes against humanity. The complaint has also cited discovery of mass grave at Hondh Chillar village of Haryana in February 2011 to drive home the point that a cover up continued for all these years. Under US process, the plaintiff has120 days to serve summons, after which the defendant has 21 days to respond. SFJ activists indicated they are aware Gandhi is in the US, most likely in New York City, but appeared uncertain about how to serve the summons. We have some idea where she is staying but she has already got the tip that there are summons out for her, SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun told TOI, explaining the idea behind hiring a process server. Even if they failed to serve the summons on her personally, there were two other options, he said: Serving it at the office of the Overseas Indian National Congress, or at the party headquarters in New Delhi. Pannum said the lawsuit against Gandhi under the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVP) is motivated by an interest in seeking some form of justice for the victims of November 1984 Sikh genocide and raise awareness in the international community regarding denial of justice to the victims, and deterring future abuses. Congress party partisans believe the lawsuit is a frivolous attempt to gain publicity. On its Facebook page, SFJ changed its cover photo to one of Sonia Gandhi under the caption US Courts are looking for you. Sonia Gandhi is in the US and believes because she's there on a medical visit; she is immune from any legal action. Well Gandhi, I got news for you... SFJ will come after you when you're healthy, SFJ will come after you when you're sick, SFJ will come after you and anyone else, if they've ever participated in the killing of innocent Sikhs or provide protection for those who murdered innocent Sikhs! the text below it read. If you are not aware of the on-going rules, please be informed that any Goan who obtains Portuguese nationality has to pay a fee for renouncing the Indian citizenship and a hefty fine if the Indian passport is not surrendered immediately which can amount to Rs One Lakh++ to the Indian Government!!! Yet again if one wants to apply for OCI, one has to pay around Indian Rs. 30,000/- and perhaps more. Maria do Céu, I hold a Canadian passport. According to the then Tanzanian law, the day I acquired my Canadian citizenship, my Tanzanian citizenship became invalid. I did not have to renounce it. Tanzanian citizenship law is now changed with complete dual citizenship in the pipeline. Let me emphasis this, complete dual citizenship. India offers a curious type of dual citizenship where the Indian's strip away the rights of the Indian citizen while allowing the Indian to enjoy all rights of the foreign country. If India is serious about dual citizenship, it has to offer complete dual citizenship. It has to be a leader in this field and not a laggard. This idea of a second class citizenship is a second class idea. Mervyn What are you guys trying to prove to each other? I find people like you who have ‘sizzling blood veins and brains’ could come up with constructive ammunition for the love of Goa by focussing on down-to-earth matters and I am sure that there will be many backing you up on this agenda…. Re: [Goanet] Dueal citizenship should be the motto
I find the very concept of dual citizenship to be repugnant. A dual citizen has divided loyalties to two different countries. Far fetched, but on which side would a dual citizen's loyalties lie if the two countries he belongs to are at war with each other ? I prefer to pledge my allegiance to one country, come what may, and only if f or whatever reason, such as immigration to improve my life prospects, I decide to accept the citizenship of another country, I will abandon my former citizenship.India is absolutely correct in requiring those who take citizenship in another country to give up Indian citizenship. This is what any self respecting country will do. I believe the trend towards dual citizenship started with the Israelis for which the USA made a special exception because they are hand in glove with the Israelis anyway. For all practical purposes, Israel may as well be the 51st State of the USA. Does Canada allow its citizens to hold dual citizenship ?. Citizens of the USA by law are automatically considered to have renounced US citizenship if they acquire the passport of another country, or join the Armed Forces of another country.

[Goanet] Mull ani Bull
Dear Marshall, I must thank you for your intervention. This encounter has widened my horizons. I have come to realise that the abomination of caste as practised by Goan Catholics is nothing compared to the tribulations suffered by their counterparts in Southern India. These are some of the illustrative stories that have come to my notice: (1 (1) On 9th March, 2008, two Christians died and 40 more were wounded in police firing during clashes between Dalit Catholics and upper caste Catholics in the diocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu). Three months earlier, Dalits from St Jabamalais Annai Church in Earyur built another church dedicated to Saghaya Madha (Our Lady of perpetual Help) and sought to have it erected as a separate parish with its own priest. In response some 500 upper caste Christians went on a rampage on Sunday, attacking Dalits and torching over 30 huts. Police were pelted with stones and were thus forcedto open fire on the aggressors. Fr G Cosmon Arokiaraj, secretary to the Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India said, For years Dalits have been discriminated within the Church itself. They cannot sit with upper caste members in the same church; they are buried in separate cemeteries; they cannot use the same roads as upper caste people. When the mother of a Dalit priest died in the 1990s the upper caste did not allow the funeral procession to use the main road; even the bishop failed to bring about a compromise. Pl. see at: http://www.asianews.it/index.php?l=enart=11726 (2) The biennial report submitted by the Commission for Scheduled Castes/Tribes and Backward Classes of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India at the CBCI Annual General Body meeting in 2000 at Chennai, says Dalit Christians, forming the majority in the Christian community, suffer humiliation, discrimination and socio-educational disabilities even after conversion due to the traditional practice of untouchability in the Church and in society. (3) Father K Amal, a catholic priest and the Head of Human Rights Cell at the Indian Social Institute, Bangalore, says Although Christianity in principle does not have caste, the truth is different. There is a huge resistance from the upper caste members of the church when it comes to treating Dalit Christians as equals, or sharing power in the Church's hierarchy with them. And a handful of people like me who favour it are not welcomed at all. (4) In 1994 a church had to be closed at K K Pudur near Chengalpattu district of Tamilnadu following clashes between Dalit Christians and Reddy Catholics. (5) In 1999 a Dalit Christian woman Jeyaseliammal's funeral was not allowed to be held at the church in Eraiyur of Trichy district in Tamilnadu by the Vanniyar Christians of the region. (6) In the year 2000, Jnanaprakash, a Dalit Christian from Hassan district in Karnataka, was allegedly murdered following a fight with an upper caste member. His family members say that the police did not even register a case. Pl. see at: http://www.indiatogether.org/2006/oct/soc-dalitsc.htm If this is their plight in this enlightened twenty-first century, one shudders to think about the situation extant in the 1940s when the Constituent Assembly was debating such issues. Among the Christian members, Fr. Jerome ( being from Madras) was certainly aware of all this and therefore should have striven to ameliorate the lot of these brethren in Christ, instead of sticking to the *theory* that Christianity does not recognise castes. The Catholic dalits are not enjoying the theory, they suffer the reality! But he did nothing of the sort, unlike some others who went out of their way to air the sufferings of their constituents like Mr. Jaipal Singh who, on 27th August 1947, said, .. Sir, a good deal has been said by my friends, the Scheduled Castes leaders in gratitude in regard to the reservation that has been made for appointments. Only a few days ago the Government of India made announcement that a certain policy would be followed so that the scheduled castes would find a place in the central Government. I deeply regret that the most needy, the most deserving group of Adibasis has been completely left out of the picture. No such intervention is noticed from any of the Christian members. Contrary to my earlier misconception (which prompted you to intervene), it was not so much the influence as the acquiescence of the Christian members which resulted in the exclusion of Christian dalits in the Order of 1950, issued in pursuant to Article 341(1). Because this handicap stems from the Act of 1935 and the Order of 1936. This is what they say: The Act: First Schedule, on p. 217: 26-1 an Indian Christian means a person who professes any form of the Christian religion and is not a European or an Anglo-Indian ; the scheduled castes means such castes, races or tribes or

[Goanet] A Conversation With: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar (India.Blogs.NYTimes.com)
A Conversation With: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar By SAMBUDDHA MITRA MUSTAFI PHOTO: Manohar Parrikar, chief minister of Goa, speaking at the closing ceremony of the 43rd International Film Festival of India in Panaji, Goa, on Nov. 30, 2012. Pollsters and analysts have been talking about the increasing chances of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.) emerging as the single largest party in India's 2014 national elections, but falling short of the total number of parliamentary seats needed to form a government. The B.J.P.'s de-facto prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is controversial and unacceptable to many of India's regional parties, whose support will be crucial to the B.J.P. in forming the next government. Even within the B.J.P. several leaders have been harboring the ambition to replace Mr. Modi as the party's prime ministerial candidate. Among them is Manohar Parrikar, the B.J.P. chief minister of the coastal state of Goa. Mr. Parrikar is an affable face of the Hindu right and leader of India's most prosperous state by per capita income, which is also home to an influential Catholic minority and their distinct history. Mr. Parrikar has vocally supported Mr. Modi but also describes the 2002 Gujarat riots as the blot on Modi's career. The 57-year old Mr. Parrikar is a graduate of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology and has impressed middle-class Indians by taking economy-class flights, by hailing a taxi himself at the airport, and with clean governance in his state, when political excess and corruption are commonplace. Mr. Parrikar recently spoke to India Ink in Panjim, the state capital of Goa. Q. Are you a potential prime minister candidate for the B.J.P. if enough coalition partners do not back your current leader, Mr. Narendra Modi, after the 2014 general elections? Polls suggest the B.J.P. will need allies, and may have to sacrifice Mr. Modi after the elections. A. No, not at all, I am not a candidate. And I don't think the current opinion polls are accurate. It's too early for the polls – voter behavior has not polarized yet, the campaign has not started. But there is a 5 to 6 percent vote swing in favor of the B.J.P. and if you map our party's demographic, then we have the possibility of winning in 330 to 340 seats [above the 272 majority mark, and enough to ensure Mr. Modi as prime minister]. Q. Is the B.J.P. placing all bets on this unprecedented sweep, though your best performance to date is 183 seats, in 1999? Does your party not have a Plan B? A. The Plan B, if there is one, need not be discussed when we are trying our best to win with our Plan A. A smart operator always has an exit policy, but that exit policy is not discussed in advance, never. It has to be an inside affair of the party. Q. But by projecting Mr. Modi as your leader, are you not turning off many voters who do not identify with a right-wing hardliner? A. Today the scenario in the country is a [Congress party-led] regime that is not delivering, a regime where the prime minister [Manmohan Singh] is seen as a lame duck. The government has to be pragmatic and get things done, but this government is incapable of doing it, it's in a perpetual state of suspension. In these circumstances, particularly young people see an alternative model in Modi, and if they want him as prime minister they will have to elect his local representative. Also, a substantial number of businessmen are likely to back the B.J.P. this time, and they will also go for Modi. I believe a national mood is forming to put the B.J.P. in power and Modi as prime minister. Q. You have said the 2002 Gujarat riots under Mr. Modi were an administrative failure. Should he apologize for this lapse that resulted in so many deaths, as his critics suggest? A. Administrative failure does not mean everything is blamed on one man, Narendra Modi. What happened then was unfortunate, but that does not require his apology, it requires his correction and he has done that. There were many reasons why people lost control in 2002 after the dead bodies [of Hindu pilgrims from an earlier attack] were shown on TV. It should not have happened, the administration should have clamped down on any violence, [If I were in his place] I would have ensured…but Modi was new to the job as chief minister. It was a blot on Modi's career, but he was not personally a part of it. If he is guilty by connivance he should be punished, but investigations have given him a clean chit. People who oppose him do so because they fear him. Q. You are seen as the moderate face of the Hindu right, but where do you see yourself ideologically? Are you a Hindu nationalist? A. I am a 100 percent democrat, democracy is at my heart. I am a perfect Hindu, but that is my personal faith, it has nothing to do with government. India is a Hindu nation in the cultural sense [Hindus are 82 percent of the population]. A Catholic in Goa is also

Tim Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2013 02:06:47 -0700 From: socorro...@yahoo.com To: Goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: Re: [Goanet] Dueal citizenship should be the motto I find the very concept of dual citizenship to be repugnant. A dual citizen has divided loyalties to two different countries. Far fetched, but on which side would a dual citizen's loyalties lie if the two countries he belongs to are at war with each other ? I prefer to pledge my allegiance to one country, come what may, and only if f or whatever reason, such as immigration to improve my life prospects, I decide to accept the citizenship of another country, I will abandon my former citizenship. India is absolutely correct in requiring those who take citizenship in another country to give up Indian citizenship.
[Goanet] small family is it sukha family or suko (dry ) family
Friends, Government has been giving us a slogan that small family is a happy family. Ask your children Are you happy ? the answer is no. John and Lina are married. They have already planned .No children for first five years(five year plan) Lina wants promotion, John wants to build a house like the neighbour. Ground plus one. He has a car but the brand has to be changed. John takes a loan of 30 lakhs for a nice posh house. work is in progress. But somehow the first child makes its appearence. Wife is pregnant. we do not want this child. abort. five years are already over but no child now. so the child makes its appearance again. this time it is appreciated. the child is a girl. the house is ready. Baptism day big party. posh party in posh hotel. bill around one lakh seventy thousand. another loan from provident fund. The child goes to school. the servant cooks. mom goes to work dad goes to work. The servants serves and goes home. eat if you like or go to hell. the child has no one to talk to . she eats and then with the same bag on her shoulders she runs for tuition classes .at least she is happy there because the child has some one to talk to. The girl reaches eight standard. her sex organs are getting developed. she meets boys from the neighbouring boys 's school who are also sailing in the same boat. only difference is the boy is in the ninth or tenth, has costly mobile, costly zip zap motorbike and she gets attracted to him as she is devoid of love. She is longing for someone to love her. dad has no time. he works overtime. mom has no time and even she comes home she is tired and shouts at me. evening time the maid does not come and if dad comes early he gets a shouting. first or second world war. This boy is very loving. he holds my hand and kisses me on my lips what a sensation. he takes me some where and has sex with me and life goes on. One day mom finds her daughter pregnant and abortion. this boy is not to be seen any where around. life becomes even harder. daughter is starving for love and finds another one. he is no better than the first one. Then time for mom to become pregrant. this time it is the boy. family is complete. by the time boy grows up the girl becomes a drug addict. mom finds it difficult to bring up two children the elder one is never at home and goes for disco parties while the second one is 15 years younger just a child . the girl dissappears and never returns . Might have died even. some people say that she met with an accident while others say she died of overdose while the third type of people say she committed suicide. Dad is busy paying loans time for him to retire. ,world is bitter for this family. I should say small family is a sukha(dry family) God has told us increase and multiply and fill the earth. If some one had to listen to this then big family is a happy family. I have five and feel I have a small house, no parties yet my family is united and filled with love. we have enough food to eat. God loves us. Now that we are both working i gave up my lucrative job when my children needed me. my children are worth crores of rupees and so if you fix ten crores for each child I have ten multiplied by 5 . I am rich. do I sound lunatic ?
