[Goanet] UPDATES AND OBSERVATION ON LUCKY SEVEN AS ON 10TH SEPT 2017 UPTO 2 PM
The mission to tow the Lucky seven on 10th Sept has failed. The attempt fizzled out and the operation was abandoned at this time. I was at the Miramar beach from the start of the operation along with a friend of mine (ex-member of the GCZMA), and another Goan person an expert who was earlier attached to Arihant Ship breakers. The vessel started drifting towards the starboard side due to the heavy currents and because the propeller of the port side which might have been grounded which acted as a fulcrum for turning the vessel towards the right. Now the bow of the vessel is pointing towards the beach. It looked to me that the vessel might have already ruptured. The high pressure water pumps its output outlet to the starboard side seemed to be less than the intake of sea water due to rupture if any, which means there was a seepage through a new hole or a crack which might have happened during the towing operation by the tug. The operation was abandoned probably to the snap of tow cable much before the high tide set down because we could see every one in the deck resting. I was told by the person called Sagardip who was among us that a heavy ton weight anchor and heavy concrete blocks including chains were already off loaded much before the operation. ( see photo ) He was not sure about the propellers removal. He was at the site before me and ex-GCZMA member. We photographed the vessel from various angles. We observed that people could sit at the verge of the beach as it has formed a so called platform of 1 meter height ( approx) due to the vessel acting as a sea breaker (photo is available). On a positive note, the vessel was seen rolling after she was floated and the tilt has been much minimized. That means if everything is fine the operation can be resumed tomorrow or some other time when high tide is favorable. Any rupture if taken place needs to be repaired before the next operation. I am concerned about cracks that might have developed under the ships engine/generators. These will not be visible and that is the reason it needs under water studies or dry docking. I was told by the owner's representative who was present on the beach said Lucky seven is a double bottom vessel. The thickness of the double bottom plate might have reduced according to the age of the vessel which needs to be checked up by acoustic sensors testing equipment at the dry dock for validity of the vessel to comply under mercantile ( MMD) Act and shipping rules. During an earlier discussion in the morning with one Mr Tariq, representative of the vessel owner, told me that the Lucky Seven after inspection and repairs at Jaigad, should be back in the river Mandovi within the period of 3 months. My friend ex-member of GCZMA being an expert on environmental issues feels that there is a severe erosion and damage to the beach and environment due to these operational activities. Or float it, seal the surface and have artists paint murals. Perhaps even airlift it to another area. Overnight there will be an impression. This is not about metallurgical science! [Goanet] UPDATES OF LUCKY SEVEN AS ON 27TH AUGUST 2017 ( 19 HRS)
Dear James Braganza Captain of Ports Just giving you updates photos on 27th Aug 2017 at 19 hrs taken by me. This will give you a latest idea about the angle of tilting of the vessel Lucky Seven. I have noticed that number of gas cylinders were unloaded today at 18 hrs from a pick up standing at Miramar roadside and workers seen rolling them to the vessel . ( see photos). Some cylinders were already been unloaded from the vessel ( see eight photographs attached) and all the cylinders are together. I was told by reliable sources that these are meant for the welding work and cutting some parts in the hull. The lower deck is almost full of sea water and there is no chance to increase further as the sea level is shallow. It appears that the hull is already broke say 20 meters long as reported by press, and day by day it is becoming bigger and bigger and in my opinion by 7th Sept the salvage operations as planned or if accepted by salvage Co., will be extremely difficult to tow the vessel and may create lots of complications for the salvage group. I am sure that if it is towed, the bottom of the ship ( hull) is going to be destroyed completely as corrosion has already been set in. I think the Government may have to answer if something really goes wrong. You must be in a better position to know the actual internal picture of the hull since you might have already visited the ship. I was told that heavy chain blocks and some heavy machinery has already been unloaded a week back with the help of JCB crane into the trucks at Miramar roadside. Stephen Dias Dona Paula
[Goanet] UPDATES OF LUCKY SEVEN AS ON 14TH AUG 2017 AT 12 NOON.
UPDATES OF THE VESSEL LUCKY SEVEN This vessel is shown inclined towards the Port quarter side about 15 to 20 degrees and she has moved its bow due to pressure of waves. Tug did not reach yet but i believe that the tugs pulling the vessel will be difficult due to shallow waters. If the vessel remains for another week, the corrosion will further set in and chances of towing the vessel will be much difficult. This is becoming everyday difficult situation and chances are there if the tug cannot pull it than the vessel might have to go for cutting. My opinion is that the starboard propeller may be free and the Port propeller is buried and hence the waves banging on starboard quarter side the vessel position has been drifted and thus making its bow to move towards right side. Hopefully this is not going to be another River Princess or Pontoon Arossim boat. Stephen Dias Dona Paula date: 14th Aug 2017 Photos: Photos Nos: 3325 and 3328 shows the position of vessel moved due to waves Photo: 3329 shows that the anphibian JCB loading crew of about 8 persons on the vessel for repairs or welding work in the hull. Re: [Goanet] Updates on Goans in East Africa dates
Hi Tony (and Cornel too): I just copy-and-pasted this stuff from Goacom.com. It neither originates from my computer, brain, or hardwork! As someone said recently on Goanet, I'm pretty efficient in this copy-and-paste stuff. When it comes to sharing knowledge (or information), I don't think see any hierarchy ... as long as it's effective and due credits were given. Let's now collectively prevail on GoaCom to update that page with the additional inputs you sent in, and whatever others might add too. May the tribe of cut-and-paste artistes grow universally :-) FN 2008/7/16 Tony Barros <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Hi Frederick ! > > Thanks very much for giving us a taste of nostalgia and sending us down > memory lane. Re: [Goanet] Updates on Goans in East Africa dates
Hi Tony I had meant to mention with reference to one of your recent posts about musicians in East Africa, including the origins of Maliaka in Mombasa etc that, the night club you mentioned "The Sal Davis Nite Spot" in Nairobi, was owned and run by someone who attended my school (The Goan High School) in Mombasa. We knew him then as Salim Abdalla and indeed I have a professionally taken photograph of the first school orchestra, with a little Salim on the maracas! I had sent a copy of that photograph, with a requested article of mine, about my school experiences, for the brochure when the Goan High School, Mombasa, celebrated its 75th anniversary last year. I was aware that Sal had spent time in the 1970s in London, honing in on his singing skills and with a special interest in Sammy Davies Jr but was unaware, until you mentioned it that, he had a night club in Nairobi. I was lucky to visit all the places you mentioned in Tanzania including your birth-place in Iringa but although my amateur dance band (MDB) played at Greek owned hotels in Tanga twice, I did not get a chance to visit the Tanga Goan Club that you mentioned. We sure live in a small world and I too was pleased to receive Frederick's nostalgic details of Goan clubs/institutions in East Africa. I have also enjoyed Roland's material on Goan clubs in Bombay, and Cotton Mary of course, but only regret that I didn't know about such clubs when on several past short visits to Bombay. [Goanet] Updates on Goans in East Africa dates
Hi Frederick ! Thanks very much for giving us a taste of nostalgia and sending us down memory lane. However, I have added some dates on Tanganyika and Zanzibar which may be of interest to other readers. 1919 - The Goan Institute in Dar es Salaam takes shape 1956 - The Goan School opens in Changombe on the outskirts of the city 1956- The Goan Community Club is formed in the southern Tanzanian town of Iringa- my birthplace 1958 - Goan club formed in Morogoro - near Dar Es Salaam 1959/1960- The Goan Institute in Dar moves into a new building opened by Tanganyika's last Governor, Sir Richard Turnbull. Designed by the distinguished goan architect, Tony Almeida who also designed the Goan School, the building incorporated a unique open "sunken" dance floor in addition to the main dance hall. December 10, 1963- The Sultanate of Zanzibar gets "sham" independence from Britain after a political party that did not win the elections "grabs" political power. December 12, 1963- Kenya celebrates independence January 12, 1964 - an armed Revolution in Zanzibar and Pemba brings the winning Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) to power. April 26, 1964 - The Spice Islands of Zanzibar and Pemba merge with Tanganyika to form a Union called Tanzania Unfortunately, I do not know when the goan clubs in Tanga, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza and Zanzibar were formed, and I hope some other goanetters from Tanzania can fill in those dates. rgds.
