Re: [H] New build trouble?
Mark, You have a very good point. I tested the "suspect" dimm in all available sockets. Same failure...each test. Not satisfied, I then took the same dimm to another "like" machine (same hdw) and swapped out 1 good dimm for this suspect dimm. The other machine "booted" up the same (bad) way as the suspect machine. I conclude that this dimm is just bad. Yes, I will accept that I may have killed it. Really do not think so. I am focused on "infant mortality." I will give it up that "the suspect" m/b may still harbor a NOW bad dimm slot. Guess I will not know until a replacement dimm arrives to confirm. The m/b plays fine with the workable dimm in both slot 0 (black) and slot 2 (black). (slot 1 (orange) and slot 3 (orange) are for OverClocking the m/b; I do not use them!) So far, this test ("suspect") machine has been running fine with only 1GB of RAM for ~2wks 24/7 w/o any trouble.. :) Crucial and I will now decide whether I get warranty protection or not. The RMA/Warranty claim is in process. Re: [H] New build trouble?
Rick, Believe you could be close. But, Intel has very good install and removal/reset instructions in the booklet that comes with the retail E8400's. And, Asus duplicates thes instructions in the m/b UM. Still, these default hs/fans from Intel are quite odd to install. I will double check the hs/fan on the system that does not work; after I find a case to put it back into. Just now I am finishing up my upgrades to XP. I have completed my last client. But I have only managed to get the system to SP2. I do not have enough space on the hd to finish the upgrade to SP3. I am digging around in the file stack looking for stuff to delete w/o killing the system. The defrag color bar looks like both the old W2K system and the new XP system are present separately. I thought that XP would stitch itself into the W2K file system and upgrade/install/remove what was no longer needed. Does not look like this, however... :( Merry Christmas! If it don't work moved back, then the DMM suggestion is moot obviously. Good luck sorting it out, new builds can be a PITA for sure! Re: [H] New build trouble-NOW WERZ!
Winterlight, Very good thought. The display runs thru my switchview KVA. I thought of getting my spare panel just to eliminate the kvm switch. As luck would have it! I left my old PCI(32) FX5500 in the build. Then I looked at DIMM slots the RAM was plugged into...LSSI moved the RAM from the "orange" slots (dimmA2 and dimm b2) to the "black" slots (dimmA1 and dimm B1) The rotten pile of parts finally powered up, beeped, lit up the display and I now have the basic bios (0401) set to start a fresh XP install! The new toy is burning trons as I write this reply! Jazzed I AM! I am now going to have to go back an dig more into the UM about how/why the DIMM slots are so different. These new toys are very finicky about WHAT goes WHERE it seems. After I get the hd partitioned, formatted, and, XP loaded and fully patched, I will again try the ATI 4670 video card. [for later!] But, I still have some other video card questions about this.I have 2 DVI-VGA adapters. The gray one (now in use w/FX5500) has a complete array of pins to match the DVI output of the video card. The new white DVI-VGA adapter is missing many of the pins. And, the ATI docs refer to this adapter as a DVI-HDMI adapter..Funny that the back end still looks like a standard blue VGA output. Very curious ATM. But, not yet critical, or another issue.
