[ha-Safran]: Tel Aviv collection website and exhibit

2009-04-22 Thread Zachary Baker
I'm pleased to announce that the Stanford University Libraries'
website for the Eliasaf Robinson Collection on Tel Aviv has just gone
live: http://collections.stanford.edu/telaviv. It includes links to
the online exhibit and to the collection's digitized content (books,
photos, posters, archival documents, printed ephemera, maps, and more).

Stanford acquired this collection in late 2005 (with support from
Koret Foundation Funds and the Jewish Community Endowment Fund), and
with Eli Robinson's help we continue to add to it. The focus of the
collection is on the decades prior to 1948, though it does include
some later materials as well. The physical exhibit will remain in
place in Green Library's Peterson Gallery through August. For
details go
to: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/spc/exhibits/TelAvivExhibitNEW.html.

[ha-Safran]: Gale publishing on Israel

2009-04-22 Thread Susan Dubin
  Dear Safranim,

I am writing to follow up to my post to this listserv from January
14th of this year, regarding the available content in some of Gale's
database products, most notably Global Issues in Context. As
promised, Gale has been working aggressively over the last few months
to expand our broad coverage of current events in the Middle East.

I am happy to announce to this group that we have recently signed
an additional 16 titles, including:

Globes (McClatchy News Service): This publication covers political,
business and technology news and is published in Tel Aviv.

Commentary (Commentary, Inc): A scholarly magazine publishing
analysis and opinion on contemporary issues in politics, religion,
foreign affairs, social policy, culture, and the arts.

Israel Studies (Indiana University Press): A journal devoted to
multidisciplinary scholarship on Israeli history, politics, society,
and culture, with emphasis on the current State of Israel, including
the effect of events in the Diaspora communities.

Israel National News (Arutz Sheva): Based in the West Bank, Arutz
Sheva is a voice of the Israeli settlement movement and a views
itself as a counterbalance to "the 'negative thinking' and
'post-Zionist' attitudes so prevalent in Israel's liberal-left media."

Adva Center: Adva Center is an action-oriented Israeli policy
analysis center. Gale's agreement includes 11 titles ranging from
Education to Development & Globalization, Social Reports to Employment.

InFocus (Jewish Policy Center): The Jewish Policy Center's quarterly
journal, InFocus is a collection of scholarly essays that focus on a
specific policy theme each quarter.

We plan to have current coverage of all of these sources available in
our InfoTrac and Global Issues in Context products within the next
month. Articles from Globes, Commentary, and Israel Studies have
already been included in both these files. As always, we thank you
for your continued interest in and attention to Gale's products, and
we look forward to seeing many of you this summer at AJL and ALA in Chicago.

[ha-Safran]: Implementation of Hebrew Captions in the BM

2009-04-22 Thread Aaron Taub

Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that the Hebrew captions have been input
into the BM section of the LC classification schedule.

This project was truly a collaborative effort, drawing upon the
contributions of colleagues in the AJL community as well as Israel and
Judaica Section staff.

Sharon Benamou (UCLA), Nancy Sack (University of Hawaii at Manoa), and
I input the captions. Joan Biella, Edie Creeger, and Peter Kearney here
at the Israel & Judaica Section proofread the document. Lenore Bell
provided extensive guidance throughout the process. Paul Weiss of the
Policy & Standards Division at LC transferred the captions from an
MS-Word document to the schedule itself and gave invaluable feedback.
Jasmin Nof (University of Maryland) also contributed some important
suggestions.

Below are some of the underlying principles/practices that governed our
work.

1. Use Hebrew letter equivalents for romanized Hebrew words and
phrases, not Hebrew translations of English terms.

2. Provide one Hebrew script form, and not multiple forms. Unlike an
authority record, the schedule could not be comprehensive in providing
unlimited variant forms.

3. In cases of multiple spellings, use the first spelling provided in
the latest edition of the Even-Shoshan dictionary. This was especially
relevant when there were possibilities of choosing ketiv male or ketiv
haser.

4. Provide the Hebrew script reference only for the caption itself, but
not for the see reference directing the user to the caption.

5. For Hebrew script forms of personal names, provide the forms based
on predominance in the online catalog or the one found, if any, in
ha-Entsiklopedyah ha-Ivrit.

6. In cases such as "Hanukkah prayers" or "Rosh ha-Shanah prayers," do
not provide the Hebrew since çðëä is not a correlation of "Hanukkah
prayers" and we are not providing translations (i.e. úôéìåú çðëä).

As folks begin to search the schedule using Hebrew search terms, we
realize that corrections and fine tuning may be needed. Please send any
feedback to me off-list.

Many thanks!

With best wishes,
Aaron Taub

Re: [ha-Safran]: Israeli causes of interest to children

2009-04-22 Thread Linda P Wulf
Two of particular interest are
www.eliusa.org

Founded in 1979, the Israel Association for Child Protection (ELI) is
recognized by the Government of Israel and other human service agencies as
the only organization in Israel that deals specifically and exclusively with
all of the various aspects of child abuse. The organization has worked
tirelessly to increase the awareness of the problem by educating the public
at large, by training professionals, by lobbying policy decision makers, and
by providing vital information to potential victims and parents - all in
order to expand ELI's ability to give assistance.

www.jspcashelter.org

The JSPCA is Jerusalem's largest animal shelter organization. The Society
runs a shelter in the Atarot industrial area of Jerusalem - a shelter which
has been in continuous operation since 1970.
We never refuse an animal if it is hurt, on the street or in a dangerous
situation. Our shelter is a rescue shelter: Most animals that are not
adopted live out their natural lives with us. That is why our shelter is
generally overcrowded and often filled beyond its capacity. At any given
time we house up to 300 dogs and 100 cats.
In addition to our shelter, we have a vet clinic, with emergency
capabilities. The JSPCA has an extensive spay/neuter program, we believe the
only way to help deal with the current pet overpopulation.
[My son is going to support this shelter as his mitzvah project for his
barmitzvah and we visited it last week - well worth donating to it]

Re: [ha-Safran]: Israeli causes of interest to children

2009-04-22 Thread Shira London
To me, one of the best is Meir Panim. Their website shows a video
that kids can see. Meir Panim runs soup kitchens that are similar to
restaurants so people's dignity is preserved. Also, they provide hot
school lunches to impoverished children who would otherwise go
hungry. Here is the website: meirpanim.org.

Also, this website: http://www.tabletotable.org.il/english/, for
Table to Table, shows how food is "rescued" so that it doesn't go to
waste and can be provided to hungry people.

There is also an organization called Beit Hashanti
(http://www.hagshama.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=2048) that is a
home for youth that would otherwise be on the street and/or have been
abused or abandoned.

Dear safranim shalom,
I want to add to the important list that Jacob Richman share with us,
a selection of books, documentaries [videos] and websites, in
Spanish, Portuguese, Ladino and English about the Shoah. This is the
Bibliographic section of SHOA – Enciclopedia del Holocausto, in Spanish.
http://holocaustoenciclopediabibliografia.blogspot.com/

I put this section of the encyclopedia in a special webpage and I
hope that it will be helpful. Is it possible to find there a lot of
pedagogic material in paper, videos and some important websites in
Spanish, including the one of the International School for Holocaust
Studies, Yad Vashem.

By the way, I have now a US vendor.
The encyclopedia is also at the USHMM bookshop, as well as Dina
Porat, Con las manos atadas – El liderazgo sionista y el Holocausto, 1939-1945.

Bivracha,
Efraim

Dear Safranim,

You are cordially invited to a Yiddish lecture this Friday at 12:30 PM at
YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Please see details below.

The subject of my lecture is the radio scripts of Nahum Stutchkoff
(1893-1965), a renowned Yiddish linguist and playwright. Stutchkoff's radio
dramas and ads were broadcast on WEVD in New York from the early 1930's to
the mid-1950's. The Dorot Jewish Division at The New York Public Library is
fortunate to have this incredible collection.

I hope you can join us this Friday.

Kol tuv,

Re: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2009-04-22 Thread Andrea Rapp
There is a print index to AJLNewsletter reviews 1978-1990.

One of my predecessors here at Wise Temple, Judy Carsch, compiled it
and AJL published it. It's an alphabetical list by title. Of
course, you need to have kept the back issues on hand.
Would there be an interest in compiling 1990-present?
