Re: [ha-Safran] looking for a book title

2022-01-24 Thread Robbin Katzin via Hasafran
I believe it is Confessions of a Closet Catholic by Sarah Littman.
Justine Silver, a teenaged middle child, questions her faith when her best
friend, Mary Catherine McAllister gives up chocolate for Lent, but when her
grandmother suffers a stroke, Jussy has to face her relationship with religion.

[ha-Safran] Announcement of the Digitization and Reprinting of the Sharit HaPlatah Book/International Holocaust Remembrance Day Thursday January 27th

2022-01-24 Thread Schoen Books via Hasafran
Historic Holocaust Survivor Lists Digitized And Reprinted For The First Time

Hundreds of pages with the names of Holocaust survivors relocated to Displaced
Persons Camps in Austria and Germany have been reprinted and digitized. The
volumes were published in 1945 by the US Government. This was to help
survivors, the Sharit Ha-Platah,”the surviving remnant”, reach family members
around the world.

The extensive lists have never been available together and the original volumes
exist in only a few libraries worldwide. Having them in one readily available
collection will enhance access to needed information for families of survivors,
genealogists and researchers.

Ken Schoen of Schoen Books has reprinted the five bound volumes that he had
originally found buried in a library and was able to purchase.

Schoen's motif of "books with a past looking for a future" explains why he
dedicated time and effort to the project.
>From the old firehouse in downtown South Deerfield he has specialized in out
>of print scholarly books concerning the Holocaust for the past thirty years
>.Most of his family was able to escape from Nazi Germany and he grew up in a
>neighborhood with many survivor families.

Here is the link to the digitized searchable version of the five volumes put on
the web by Special Collections at the University of Massachusetts.

For the historical background to the book listen to Professor Avinoam Patt
discussing the work of Rabbi Klausnerin an interview with the Museum of Jewish
Heritage.

For more information go to

  and click on reprints.

[ha-Safran] Educational Resources for International Holocaust Remembrance Day - January 27

2022-01-24 Thread Jacob Richman via Hasafran
Shalom.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is January 27.

On my website, there are 170+ links to learn about the Holocaust.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, French, German,
Italian, Russian, and Spanish.
jr.co.il/hotsites/holocaust.htm

Since I created the page in1997, I have been updating it
at least 2 times a year: before International Holocaust
Remembrance Day - January 27 and before
Yom HaShoah - this year on April 28, 2022.

This week, I found that several sites on my list have
closed down. If a site closed, I will try to find
a copy of its content in the Internet archive.
If I am listing the content from the archive,
I will write near the link: "via archive.org".

This year, I discovered on Youtube, a video called:
"There Once Was a Town" - a 90-minute
documentary about the small town of
Eishyshok, Poland - now Lithuania.
The film is narrated by actor Ed Asner,
a descendant of an Eishyshok family.
Reknowned professor and author
Yaffa Eliach leads a group in its search
for remnants of Jewish life that flourished
before the war.
I embedded the video in the video section
of my page.

Please share this message. Thank you.

We must not forget.

Jacob

[ha-Safran] 2022 Sydney Taylor Book Awards Announced

2022-01-24 Thread AJL PR via Hasafran
Winners of the annual Sydney Taylor Book Award were announced by the
Association of Jewish Libraries today in a livestream from the Youth Media
Awards press conference at the American Library Association. Named in memory of
Sydney Taylor, author of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family series, the award
recognizes books for children and teens that exemplify high literary standards
while authentically portraying the Jewish experience.

GOLD MEDALISTS

The Passover Guest by Susan Kusel, illustrated by Sean Rubin, published by Neal
Porter Books, Holiday House, is the winner in the Picture Book category.

During the Great Depression, Muriel invites a ragged juggler to celebrate
Passover with her family. When he arrives, they are stunned to discover a
magnificent feast to share with their neighbors. Based on I. L. Peretz’s “The
Magician” with illustrations influenced by Marc Chagall, Kusel’s debut picture
book will resonate with readers young and old.

How to Find What You’re Not Looking For by Veera Hiranandani, published by
Kokila, an imprint of Penguin Random House, is the winner in the Middle Grade
category.

It's 1967, and Ariel Goldberg is trying to cope with her older sister’s
elopement with a man from India and estrangement from the family, the financial
troubles of their family-owned bakery, and her own struggles at school.
Narrated in the second person, Hiranandani perfectly captures this turbulent
period in history through the lens of a sympathetic and compelling preteen
Jewish girl.

The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros, published by Inkyard Press, is the winner
in the Young Adult category.

Romanian immigrant Alter Rosen embraces his Jewish identity while trying to
adapt to American life. When a friend is murdered, Alter is inhabited by a
dybbuk and must find the killer before it consumes him. Masterfully combining
fantasy, mystery, LGBTQ romance, and historical fiction, this gripping story is
set against the sparkling and lurid façade of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

SILVER MEDALISTS

Eight Sydney Taylor Honor Books were recognized for 2022.

For Picture Books, the Honor Books are Dear Mr. Dickens by Nancy Churnin,
illustrated by Bethany Stancliffe, published by Albert Whitman & Company; The
Christmas Mitzvah by Jeff Gottesfeld, illustrated by Michelle Laurentia Agatha,
published by Creston Books; and Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust
and the Children He Rescued written and illustrated by Peter Sís, published by
Norton Young Readers, an imprint of W.W. Norton & Company.

For Middle Grade, the Honor Books are Linked by Gordon Korman, published by
Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic; and The Genius Under the Table:
Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain written and illustrated by Eugene Yelchin,
published by Candlewick Press.

Lockhart, illustrated by Manuel Preitano, published by DC Comics; The Summer of
Lost Letters by Hannah Reynolds, published by Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin
Random House; and The Last Words We Said by Leah Scheier, published by Simon &
Schuster Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s
Publishing Division.

[ha-Safran] looking for a book title

2022-01-24 Thread Beth Braunstein via Hasafran
I'm trying to track down a book title.
the book was written several years back for middle grades about a girl who
had a holocaust survivor grandmother . The girl was toying with the idea of
converting to Christianity ( she had rosary beads). The book Had a cross on
the cover. I'm quite sure it won a Sydney Taylor book award. It won the
award the year the AJL conference was in Boston.
Want to purchase this book for a reader.
Thanks all for your help,
Beth Braunstein
