That's evil. Most people would rather have less players who are
willing
to buy the game (and probably aren't an immature 14 year old hacker)
then have a full server of twits with their hacked software :/

 - Bruce Bahamut Andrews
Yes, that's evil, but it works. Most people prefer look for a free slot
on a server, rather than join in a 0 players server and wait that a few
more players join. Will people buy CS:S if there is just a bunch of
gamers to play with? It's a multiplayer gamer, so multiple players are
need. About servers, the more players, the more servers. There will
always be a free server to join.
I'm sure that Valve wont permit a non-steam HL2, but CS:S looks
interesting for a while.

Re: [hlds_linux] Server list

2004-11-04 Thread Michael McKoy
You're late by a couple of months. Check the mailing list archives back in
August, there must have been at least 100 emails on the subject. VALVe
changed the sorting method, but no one seems to know what the order is
now. It seems to be oriented to class a networks, especially those used by
DSL/cable ISPs, meaning a lot of home-based servers are getting players
now, but a lot of higher class b and c dedicated servers are now empty.

I couldn't ever get a straight answer out of anyone on how its being
sorted other than the first octet takes priority.. usually. The 60-69.*
class A's seem to be in the front though.

 Toker,

I got the same thing. I had a server with .2 on the end that was so

2004-11-04 Thread Mark Ellis
And what does this prove?

1 That valve has finally 6 months after the fact taken action against
someone that tried to use a fake credit card.

2 They have used the free wireless access point at the beach to post to
their forums :)

3 That now HL2 has gone gold they are a little lost for stuff to do.

4 NOTHING...

So you are saying then Eric that you would rather Valve spent 6 months
working out how to ban some noob for credit card fraud than actually fixing
any problems with the HLDS.

I would rather they fixed the problems with the HLDS faster so maybe I could
join them down the beach on a weekend in my personal time rather than
sitting here restarting server cause of some stupid bug that could be fixed
in a few hours work.

On a previous version I had removed the feature that showed names,
frags, etc. because it kept crashing gkrellm.
I THINK i have found the problem. I believe the problem was that the
plugin was incompatible with certain skins/themes for gkrellm...don't
know why.
I have posted a version of gkrellm where it WILL list
players/frags/time. Once you install it, just hover your mouse cursor
over the panel (give it a second to update) and it will show the
information.
You can find the sources (either .bz2 or .gz as well as some screenies)

lemme know if you get it to work for you.

There is no quick answer. Valve borked the server list. Busy servers now sit
idle. Valve thinks it's the next best thing to sliced bread. Those who now
have traffic also think it's great. Those that have idle servers that used
to be busy think it sucks. In your case, you are basically screwed.

Your servers weren't very good. That's the quick answer. I mean, if
they were full 24/7 for many months, and they're a ghost town all of a
sudden as soon as newer, better servers are on the list, you didn't have
much--if any--semblance of a community.
