Dear Joseph, You can analyze the solo theoretically, including a formal analysis of the 3 movements. You can then analyze it in relation to Mozart's other compositions. For example, I always tell my students to listen to Mozart operas to get a clue to the phrasing, melodic and periodic structure of Mozart's melodies, etc. How does the solo fit into the historical development of the horn? Musicologically, what was taking place at the time the solo was written and first performed? When and where was it first performed? Who was the soloist? What was the characteristic of Mozart's audiences? Was the solo commissioned? How does the concerto compare to Mozart's other horn concerti? How does it compare to the other solo concerti for wind instruments? What else was Mozart working on at the time he composed this concerto? listen to those compositions to detect differences and similarities? What order is it in the order of composition of the horn concerti? of other wind concerti? of all his compositions? Examine the urtext. How have different publishers/arrangers modified it for performance? What about added ornamentation? There is a place in the third movement where some soloists have added an arpeggio at a fermata. Consult your horn professor; he or she should point you in the right direction. Use your knowledge of theory to analyze the movements harmonically, melodically, formally. You should have already studied double exposition, ABA, and rondo forms. Good luck! I had an English teacher once at Manhattan School of Music who had a liking for flowery language. She assigned a paper based on some historic fiction. I, not knowing exactly what she wanted, but knowing things she liked, wrote 8 or 10 pages of flowery garbage, mentioned the historic work a few times, and throwing in many clichés, allegories, euphemisms. In short, I wrote absolute trash which was meaningless to me. I got an A+ with comments all over, what a nice use of words!, beautiful, I couldn't agree more, I couldn't have written this better. That was a bit of work for a good laugh. Well done, my friend, but wasn´t it just a waste of your time ? Back then, I would have laughed like you did had never thought about the waste of time. But it was a waste really as it is a waste to write all this blah blah about Mozart concerti over over again. Everything has been said except, how to play it in practica. I did that, but it is not published, but under work in English German, a complete tutor how to play the Mozart concerti why play them that way. But from the player standpoint of view not from the theorist, who knows what to do with his little friend but the little friend does not obey his orders. All these blah blah about Mozart audience in the past today, the natural horn practica, the pieces around the time he composed the concerti, all this has filled rows of books, some talk about the income is missing as is missing the talk about the social situation of musicians during Mozarts time. There were a few themes to discuss themes worth to be explored, but it would be very time consuming you probably could not have the access to the relevant archives except by coming to Munich, Salzburg Vienna, being prepared to read old handwritings understand them (they are in German mostly, old style German). But this would again result in a big waste of time, as besides a few scholars no musician would read this dissertation. Would you think, that more than 5 or ten horn players in the world would read it ? Really ? Resumee: Write a two page perfect form analysis of the concerto, including the few facts we know about it, off course pointing to the little cadenza chance in the last movement, naming a few other composers of the same genre of concerts, mention a few recordings, listing the natural scale, - that´s it should convince your teacher more than useless blah-blah around like a phone book, just to smear paper, as recommended by others. Re: [Hornlist] mozart 2
Joseph, I did a google search using - mozart horn concerto analysis and got several hits, including the one below http://www.lib.utk.edu/~music/analysis/antab22.html Also searched using - mozart horn concerto performance analysis and got several hits, including http://otto.cmr.fsu.edu/~psychmus/ab15.html A critical part of choosing the topic for a research paper is that there is adequate existing material for you to use as background - compare / contrast / etc. Also it is necessary for the scope of the topic to be suitable for the amount of time and written pages that it will receive. You might consider discussing Mozart HC2 in comparison with his other HC, and in comparison with his concerti for other solo wind instruments. Do additional searches for suitable reference / background material, and adjust the specific topic to one that is do-able. Maybe talk some more with your teacher about this, the teacher probably is not expecting you to discover some astonishing new information about the topic. The goal of the paper is probably to show that you can do proper research, choose reliable sources (and make sure you discover and reference the major well-known sources, discover similar and contrary opinions, and organize and construct your paper so that it makes sense to read. Re: [Hornlist] mozart 2
What does your music history teacher expect by ten pages analysis of Mozart no.2 concerto ? As a musical analysis of an occasional work (as are all horn concertos by Mozart anyway) would cover not more than one page, if at all (exposition - used natural harmonics, used manipulated notes - development - recapitulation - cadenca similar but less material about 2nd % 3rd mov.), the only things you could write about: three pages blah-blah about the horns history, other two or three pages about the hand horn techique (difficult to assemble more text on this matter) and a list of performers ibcluding the different metronom, perhaps a long list of books with text about the horn. Sources: Heinrich Domnich: Method for Horn, Hans Pizka: Mozart the Horn (get through interloan from e.g. Pierpont Mogan Library N.Y.), The Horn Call, Mozart Jahrbuch, Freiberg: The Horn (from Hohe Schule der Musik). Screw your teacher about his silly attempt to screw you. All this things are done over over over in the same way are useless absolutely. It is just wasting time, wasting your time, as I am sure, you could do much better with your time. The music history teacher simply was too lazy to think more about what you could write about. e.g. the importance of the horn in the early development of the Woodwind Quintet Music. e.g. the change of the role of the horn in the brass- or Wind-Band. Good luck for your project. .. joseph fuller [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: I am doing a ten page form analysis of the mozart 2.
