Re: [HOT] Query Regarding Mapathon

2017-06-27 Thread Dan Joseph
Hi Saikat,

There are a lot of great resources on http://www.missingmaps.org/host/ that
will help you organize a mapathon.

And there are usually a number of tasks that need mappers up on the tasking
manager http://tasks.hotosm.org/

Did you have specific questions that aren't answered by those resources?

All the best,
Dan Joseph

Re: [HOT] Posting Mapathon on Missing Maps Event Calendar

2016-09-06 Thread Dan Joseph
Hi Mike,
We're looking into who has access to those form submissions. In the
meantime, and if it's not too late, I can happily add your event(s) to the
website if you send me the details. Sorry about the delays and confusion.
All the best,
Dan

[HOT] OpenDroneMap and Portable OSM (POSM)

2016-09-02 Thread Dan Joseph
Hi All,

The American Red Cross GIS Team is constantly looking for new ways to
improve our workflows and learn from the OpenStreetMap and FOSS4G
communities. The vast majority of the GIS analysis and map making we do is
done using FOSS4G tools and we strive to be effective contributors as well
as consumers.

We've supported the development of Portable OSM (POSM <
https://github.com/AmericanRedCross/posm> as an affordable (can be run on
hardware costing less than $300) solution to make OpenStreetMap,
OpenMapKit, and Field Papers available for deployments in
connectivity-limited environments. POSM consolidates cloud-based tools into
a portable server that acts as a temporary local data hub for digital
mapping, surveying, and field media collection.

The next stage of development is working with the folks at Stamen to
incorporate OpenDroneMap (for processing UAV imagery) into the stack of
software available for installation on a POSM. We'd love to hear your
thoughts, concerns, use-cases, and other comments. Send us an email or
leave an issue on the POSM GitHub repository <
https://github.com/americanredcross/posm/issues>.

Re: [HOT] #2097 Peace Corps Jamaica -- Kingston

The tasking manager lists the creator of the task on the page. Check the
bottom of the 'Description' tab.
Peace Corps tasks are generally managed by Courtney Clark

Re: [HOT] Looking for inspiration building covering multiple buildings

2016-07-10 Thread Dan Joseph
Is this in areas with dense structures and instead of trying to trace each
building the mapper has just traced around the entire group? Or the mapper
has just incorrectly used the building key when they should use the landuse
key? If the area is particularly large I would think the JOSM validation
process might flag the issue via a 'building inside building' error or some
sort of features overlapping/crossing error.

If multiple mappers from the same mapathon make the mistake, it may be
productive to reach out to the mapathon organizer and ask them to spend a
little more time at their next event going over how to map buildings and
tag them correctly.

While some mapathon mappers do only map once and never again. Mapathons are
a great way to introduce people to OSM and also result in long-term
contributors.

All the best,
Dan

Re: [HOT] Mapping clouds and low resolution imagery

2016-04-11 Thread Dan Joseph
Hi John,
While Bing imagery is probably the most commonly used imagery for tracing.
There are a variety of other sources. For example, the State Department
through their MapGive initiative (http://mapgive.state.gov/) often provides
recent DigitalGlobe imagery for specific tracing tasks. Also, data might
come from an import (and not having been traced from imagery). Having some
sort of measure of "completeness" of OSM is a difficult question. What do
you use for the denominator in the equation? Mikel Maron wrote a blog post
that might be of interest (
https://www.mapbox.com/blog/how-complete-is-openstreetmap/).
Sounds like you're working on a cool project.
All the best,
Dan

Re: [HOT] Plz guide me about my work

2016-03-05 Thread Dan Joseph
Hi Autre,
Thanks for getting involved and doing some mapping! It's great that you're
reaching out for feedback. We encourage validators on HOT tasks to provide
comments but it doesn't always happen. I took a quick look at your edits.
One thing that would improve the quality is to square your buildings. In iD
editor, after tracing a building it's one of the options in the menu that
appears on hover or you can you use the keyboard shortcut 's' (see
this animated
GIF
).
There are some great tutorial videos covering buildings and roads posted on
MissingMaps.org (http://www.missingmaps.org/contribute/#learn). Also, try
to make sure the building outlines don't connect (don't share points)
unless it's clear that's the case on the ground. Otherwise, your traced
buildings for #hotosm-project-1335 do seem to match the satellite imagery.
Thanks again and hoping you'll help out on some new tasks
.
All the best,
Dan
