[HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan - Mapping to support Aid Deliveries

2014-05-04 Thread Mark Cupitt
Dear All

In support of the Drought Relief Efforts in The Tharparker Desert, the HOT
Community has a Humanitarian Mapping Project (HMP) underway to map
population areas, access roads and airfields as well as water sources and
other critical information.

The Tharparker region in Pakistan is the world's 18th largest desert and
has been in a state of drought since late 2013. Recently more than 100
people have died as a result of the effects of the drought.

The Pakistan Government has mobilized to assist this stricken area and this
HMP will be useful to support relief efforts by agencies attempting to
reach all the people in need.

Full background information on the drought and mapping needs are on the HMP
Wiki
Page
and Tasking Manger job exists for the
area and is over 60% completed.

Please help with mapping and validation so this task may be completed.

Regards

Mark Cupitt

Hi Mark,

Thanks for this very comprehensive email and wikipage.
It is likely this HMP will last longer than higher priority Crisis, be
patient and keep going!

Sincerely,

[HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan - Mapping to support Aid Deliveries

2014-03-27 Thread Mark Cupitt
Dear All

In support of the Drought Relief Efforts in The Tharparker Desert, the HOT
Community has commenced a Humanitarian Mapping Project (HMP) to map
population areas, access roads and airfields as well as water sources and
other critical information.

Wiki
Page
and a Tasking Manager Job has been
created for the area

This is a* Medium Priority HMP*, secondary to the Guinea Ebola
Outbreak
 activation.

Please help map this desert area when you have some spare time and when the
Guinea Ebola Outbreak is completed.

Re: [HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan

2014-03-24 Thread Pierre Béland
Hi Mark,

I started to work in the area in the last few weeks adding the major roads and
nearly 850 place names. From the Place names I added to the map, it should
faciliate finding the villages. In some areas, the habitat is dispersed in
various small hamlets. We also see both huts and houses. It's sometimes
difficult to see the habitat in more desertic areas. The examples below should
help understand the type of habitat.

There are often ponds around some villages.  This is surely an important
aspect, since there is a drought crisis.  We should also look if we see any
water wells. Water tower are also important to map.

Plus for sure the road network.

Hi,

This is awesome, I feel that with both of you Mark and Nadeem, there will
be a great balance between will, experience, local knowledge and
availability and a great mentor with Andrew! I am on IRC if ever needed.
Maybe we can discuss all together (I mean on this list) about how to make
the data produced used as much as possible by the relief organizations. I
worked in the past for WHO in Islamabad, so I can trigger this channel.
Nadeem are you based in Pakistan?

Regarding the TM experience, maybe you can start your first ones in the TM
dev instance?

Sincerely,

Severin

Re: [HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan

2014-03-23 Thread Mark Cupitt
Hi Severin

I would be willing to lead/participate a monitoring if You/Pierre/Others
would be willing to mentor me. I am not sure what the time requirement
would be but I could manage two-three hours per day at the moment. My
learning curve would be a little steep initially as I have only used TM but
I would like to learn the HOT tools and get more involved.

I live in GMT+8 (Philippines) and have IRC (recently installed) so if you
would like to point me where to go on IRC to get started and ask questions,
I will get on with the job.

[HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan

2014-03-23 Thread Severin Menard
Hi,

Since the beginning of March 2014, severe shortages of food and water have
been reported in Tharparkar
District in
Pakistan's south-east Sindh province. A number of children have reportedly
died of malnutrition. The area has not received any significant rainfall
since the end of 2013. Tharparkar has been declared calamity-hit by the
Government of Sindh and PKR 18.6 million have been released for immediate
relief. See these reports from ECHO
:
http://reliefweb.int/map/pakistan/10-march-2014-pakistan-displacement-drought
and
from the Government of Pakistan:
http://reliefweb.int/report/pakistan/tharparkar-drought-sindh-situation-report-11-covering-period-21-march-2014-1400-hrs

I created this
uMapto
help identify the district and see what is the stated of the OSM data.
Thanks to Pierre, the main roads are already mapped. I checked the imagery
and the whole district is covered by quite good Bing imagery, so we can
provide the baseline data for the relief.

Basically, it would be hard for me or Pierre to lead, would be great if
someone would be interested to lead a monitoring over this area. Basically,
it encompasses creating an OSM wikipage, featured TM jobs (one by one, with
each one covering only a town, not a huge area, eg look at the jobs for the
Central African Republic), HOT exports jobs ,
updating the uMap (see this
example),
providing feedback to the HOT mailing list and if possible write a blog
post when achieved.

If you are already experienced, great. If you feel you do not master
everything listed above but would really like to learn, no problem, IMHO
there are enough experienced people that can help you to start through
email, IRC or Mumble . If there
are more than one candidate, this will make a great team!

Sincerely,

Severin
