Thoughts on DFSMShsm ABARS in today's environment

2015-04-24 Thread Lizette Koehler
List -
I am currently working with ABARS process. As I get into it, I was wondering
with today's Storage Array, Replication, Snap, Flash Copy, is it still needed?

Are there any significant reasons to setup and maintain an ABARS process?

The one answer - It was setup years ago and works fine - is already noted. But
what about a shop today. If you are not running ABARS would you see a reason
to use it?

If you are running ABARS, what does it provide you in your shop for your
applications?

Thanks for the input

Re: LOOKING FOR INFO

2015-04-24 Thread Christopher Mason
That means you can support up to 96 controllers does not necessarily mean
you have that many. There are a few ways you can figure out how many
controllers you have.

1. Physically go to the F05 frames(cabinets) and look to see how many
controllers you have. Not sure what flavor you have C06(P5) or C07(P7).

2. Look at the tape devices in your IODF and view the device there will be
a LIBPORT-ID associated with the devices. Each LIB-Port is a controller.

3. In your IOCP each Control Unit defined for your tape drives in the
library will be a controller.

Re: New zPDT redbook

2015-04-24 Thread Vince Coen

Mike;

There must be more to it in migrating a program (Cobol compiler )
written in C that uses many Linux components (Bison springs to mind but
there is a lot more) that accesses files both in the current directory
and in specific one's (e.g., /usr/local/lib/ and others).

I do not think just recompiling using the IBM C compiler is enough
somehow. Otherwise it would have been done some time back - unless
someone knows better ?

As it is I can use the compiler's in OS/390 or Z/OS such as :

IBM COBOL for OS/390 & VM 2.1.2

or

IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 4.1.0

But there appear a lot more complex for building a few simple accounting
applications that I have running under gnuCobol on Linux that I have now
made Open Source on sourceoforge.

A long time ago they did use CICS (1970's) but al that was replaced
using SCREEN SECTION which has its own problems if running in a GUI
environment such as Linux KDE/Gnome or even - if you have to - Windows)

I am not really up to putting CICS back into them assuming is has
seriously been improved for working on PC's -0 which I doubt.

Possibly better to try and change them to support using via a web
browser which would be a long - process as I have never tried such, but
hay, I am retired with a far bit of time on my hands.

The other issue I have is trying to work out how to get any kind of
printed o/p from both O/S's to my PC and then to a PDF file as I have
under MVS 3.8. JES2 only seems to understand a 3800 and not a simple
one like a 1403. The former is far to fancy in its handling to just
transfer over to a PC and print out without a lot of control and other
junk chars getting in the way. Not helped by the JES2 paramw able to be
in so many different places in the system - applies to both OS's.

There was a time - OK, MVS days when you could get 1/2 books that would
cover most of what you needed to do and give references to the primary
IBM docs for the others but that seems to have vanished now with the
current O/S crop - or is it I am getting to old (68 shortly)!

Re: Extended SMS routine

2015-04-24 Thread Darth Keller
A small suggestion for the code below would be to add a unique identifier to
each WRITE Statement. It seems like every company I've implemented SMS in has
constructs which are assigned at multiple points in the code.

If that were to be true in this case, it would be more difficult to determine
at which point DSOMEDC was assigned. I've found it to be very helpful to add
identifiers like
WRITE 'DC000100 DATACLASS SET to ('&DATACLASS')'
Each DC# is unique to that WRITE/EXIT combination. When debugging an issue, it
can speed things up as your EXIT point is immediately identified. You can also
add some of the WRITE variables to help you in debugging the issue like &DSN,
&DD, &ANYVOL, etc.

//

IF &DATACLAS EQ '' THEN /* HONORING SPECIFIED STORAGE CLASSES*/
   SELECT
WHEN (&DSN EQ &WHATEVER)
  DO
SET &DATACLAS EQ 'DCSOMEDC'
WRITE 'DATACLASS IS SET TO ('&DATACLAS')'
EXIT
  END
WHEN (&DSN EQ &SOMETHING)
  DO
SET &DATACLAS EQ 'DCOTHER'
WRITE 'DATACLASS IS SET TO ('&DATACLAS')'
EXIT
  END
(repeat as needed)
OTHERWISE
  SET &DATACLAS EQ ''

   END /* END SELECT */

Re: JES2 as primary with JES3 as a secondary

2015-04-24 Thread Henn, Karl
Thanks, Lizette!

I am aware of those lists, and you are right in saying that I should also post
my question there.

Content-wise, I still do see the issue "somehow somewhere in-between" MVS and
JES. I'm still not quite sure where to start looking and searching ...

Anyway, thanks a lot.

Further ideas are always welcome.

Regards

Karl

Karl,
If you are not aware - there are also a JES2 and JES3 list. If you would like
to join, go to these URLs

JES2http://listserv.vt.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=jes2-l
JES3http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/jes3-l.html

The biggest difference I see is that JES3 needs to know it owns resources
before it will let things run. JES2 does not. That may be a consideration in
trying to run JES3 under JES2
