In that case, of course, there wouldn't be anything wrong in having
Microsoft Office or Oracle. In that case, of course, there wouldn't be
any need for campaigning for Free Software. Well, let people use
whatever they want, what is the harm? By extension, why should we work

But that won't make it Free (as in Freedom).

do they really have to? I dont think so. IMO there is no harm in
having such softwares, for GNU/linux or any other kind of free
(and/or) open source OS's, which proprietary in nature.

As far as I know, there is no Free software like Tally. If you look at
the available ones, you will see that they stopped development soon
after the first few releases. There are personal accounting software
like SQL Ledger that are probably quite mature, but nothing in the class
of Tally. There is an Indian project called GNUKhata, which may not be
as versatile as Tally, but you could, perhaps, take a look at it. See:

My parents use tally for calculating tax and other stuffs, Is there any
existing accounting OpenSource software like tally that get live updates
through the net on tax issues and other fiscal policies as soon as
implemented. If such one doesnt exist, could be a good project..

Please find equivalent software at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty,
you will be amazed by the ease and functionality that is on offer. Tally
systems can not be customized and by default any PC/propriety software will
run slow for a fact that they use MS database and reporting engine.

2009-10-22 Thread Shibu Nair
Yes it is true.
Using wine is not a solution, where you still need Win. There are better
options for financial accounting based on Linux.

Tally is a good accounting software and let me remind you, you are
vulnerable to viruses. One more thing people have intelligence can access
your tally accounts over net. Be careful!
