Dear Pankaj,

Well, I have to go by the words of a researcher who knows the sanctuary like
the
back of her hand and is along with her fellow-researchers preparing a
coffee-table book on the bio-diversity of Joypur forest. She said that there
were 27 orchids emanating from that tree. Anyway, am attaching some slightly
better pictures in my next mail of trees nearby loaded with ferns, lichens,
orchids, etc

  Nalini ji
Thanks for sharing interesting information. This example is also met in Horse
chest nut and Walnut, which we teach to the students as a special case of
endozoochory, where the propagule gets dispersed without having to pass through
the alimentary canal of the animal The typical examples of endozoochory are met
in Rubus, strawberry, etc where the whole fruit is ingested by the animal and
the hard seeds are passed out along with faecal matter at a place away from the
mother plant. They germinate to give rise to new plants.

Re: [efloraofindia:43082] Re: please id this medicinal plant

2010-08-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Nalini ji and Tanay
Perhaps this will resolve the identity of plant posted by Naliniji, and
possibly also Arjun ji

P. crispum: Leaves small, usually less than 2.5 cm long, margin toothed and
incised but not divided, margin crisped; flowers 2-2.5 cm long, upper larger
petals sometimes emarginate.

P. graveolens: Leaves large, usually longer than 5 cm, long petiolate,
divided almost to the base into 5-7 lobes, lobes again divided into about 6
mm broad segments dentate along margin; flowers 1.5 cm long.

On that basis Naliniji's plant is clearly Pelargonium graveolens, and so is
that of Arjun ji. There is some mix up of names. P. crispum is lemon
geranium (that must have led Tanay to give this name) or Crisped-leaf
geranium and P. graveolens the rose geranium or rose-scent geranium. But
that in no way should affect the identification. Photograph of the plant is
here with us.

Here are some links:

http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelargonia_pachnąca

http://toptropicals.com/pics/garden/m1/raznozvet2/Pelargonium_graveolens9308.jpg

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/43430/

http://sc.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pelargonium_crispum1.jpg

But then there is a lot of confusion and mix up there on the internet, the
images having been mixed up. That must also be reason for mix up of the
names. But my description is based on famous book "Manual of Cultivated
Plants" by L. H. Bailey

[efloraofindia:43083] Any research on this among the group?

2010-08-01 Thread Marianne de Nazareth
Dear all,

"Invasive plants can affect community structure and
ecosystem processes in various ways. One of the ways in which an invasive
plant can impact ecosystem functioning is by disrupting native
plant-pollinator interactions,." says a researcher from Bangalore.

Recently I have seen a massive growth of an invasive plant Lantana camara in
Hoskote on the outskirts of Bangalore. Does any one in the group have any
research findings that can bind this explosion of the Lantana to Climate
Change. I am interested in working a story on this but I do not have
scientific proof to support this phenomenon.

regds,

Marianne

2010-08-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Rashida ji
I was also tossing between these two species, and had almost decided on A.
azurea till I saw calyx lobes. They are supposed to be linear with calyx
divided nearly to the base and flowers 1.5-2 cm across. I don't exactly
remember the flower size and it can't be made out from photographs, but the
calyx lobes are triangular and shorter than tube, that matches with A.
capensis and clinched the issue for me. Let us see more comments.

[efloraofindia:43103] Re: Any research on this among the group?

2010-08-01 Thread Smilax004
Hi,

To understand what effect invasive plants on the local community, I
think, one has to know what was/is the community organisations of
plants existing in our natural habitats. Now people are looking at the
similar habitats or places nearby. But imagine things such as climate
change might have influence on the whole system/community.

We have a habit of starting research works when some visual influence
on the community (defined/undefined?) is seen just as that of climate
change as the hot topic now. No body can say what was the scenario in
a specific area prior to such changes.

When we would have a solid data on the community organisation of flora
or fauna in natural habitats?
Taxonomic works on plants are not going beyond the systematics of
plants.
When will we study the ecology, distribution, reproductive biology and
threats of each species/population/community?
Why no PhD problems are coming up with utmost seriousness with respect
to the real scenarios in the field other than very few serious works
from here and there out of thousands produced every year?

Without knowing the community structure/organisation/species
composition of any natural habitat, how can we say that 'something' is
the result of invasion or climate change?

Dear Marianne, I would suggest Mr. Bharath Sundaram, who works on
Lantana invasion in BRT sanctuary in Karnataka as his PhD thesis
problem, for further queries. You can contact him at

Regards,
Giby

Re: [efloraofindia:43115] Any research on this among the group?

2010-08-01 Thread Satya Prakash
Hi,

Though research studies are needed at large on the impacts of invasive species
on local/ native flora but here you could find few examples to carry out work
on this aspect.

First, Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India
We all know about the world heritage site wher Prosopis juliflora was dominant
invasive species along with Water Hyacinth. In 2007, KNP Forest Department
started uprooting of this invasive species. The earlier species are well
documented in the work of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Mumbai. Today
one could see the revival of native flora specially Salvadora & Acacia spp.

You can compare the flora before invasion of Prosopis juliflora, at the time of
P. juliflora and after its removal. Research work could be referenced in your
work which is readily available with KNP Forest Department &/or BNHS.

Second, Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirohi, Rajasthan, India
Here you could find the well documented literature on plantation of exotic
species specially Eucalyptus and Lantana. Though studies on impact of
plantation of these species are lacking but on the basis of the availability of
the herbs (which are mainly collected by local people from very past) could be
assessed.

Will give you one example of the impact - Species of Carrissa, Rosa and many
aquatic species of medicinal value were now no more to see on the table land of
the Abu Hills which were once common on this part of hills. Human settlements
are mainly on this table land. Further, expansion of the Lantana is taking
place through out the hills. Seeds of Lantana are dispersed by the droppings of
Bulbul (very common bird) and Sloth Bear (common mammal) in core areas of hills.

The aquatic bodies (pictures from archives) which were once full of local
vegetation are now either dried or even lost their existence. One could easily
see monoculture Eucalyptus in those aquatic bodies.

Change. I am interested in working a story on this but I do not have scientific
proof to support this phenomenon.

The book, 1949 edition is published by Macmillan Co., New York. It is out of
print. I bought a second hand copy while in USA. If you are planning to buy,
go for Hortus Third published in 1969. An old copy may be available on the
net at reasonable price.

 Dear Nalini Ji,

I am not aware of German name as I have no idea regarding the language.
But the only the thing i can assume is the scientific name, which is

 *Pelargonium crispum* (Berg.) L'Her. *Engl.
*gooseberry geranium, crisped-leaf geranium, lemon geranium, lemon-scented
 geranium, peach geranium.

... me too think it to be *Lindernia*.
Most possibly a species else than *L. crustacea*.

Familiar with the sepals of *L. crustacea* -- tube-like, with teeth ...
here, they are deeply divided.
Other observations:
... the leaves here have more of serrated margin than what have been seeing
in *L. crustacea* ... dentate.
... the flower size here looks comparatively larger, almost twice that of *L.

Not sure of morphological variations.

HORTUS and EXOTICA are available at CROSSROADS Mumbai, I remember

The manual for Cultivated Plants I think I have seen at Bisen Singh

Thank you Prof. Singh ji for clearing the doubts.
I have really no idea about the different varieties and species etc. etc. I can
differenciate between sunflower and oxalis, there ends my knowledge. I just
enjoy looking at the flowers and the insects. So I am really glad that the
exact identification is done by experts in this group
Thanks again to you.

I really admire your enthusiasm, I thought you would be packing your suitcase,

  Nalini ji and Tanay
Perhaps this will resolve the identity of plant posted by Naliniji, and
possibly also Arjun ji

  P. crispum: Leaves small, usually less than 2.5 cm long, margin toothed and
incised but not divided, margin crisped; flowers 2-2.5 cm long, upper larger
petals sometimes emarginate.

  P. graveolens: Leaves large, usually longer than 5 cm, long petiolate,
divided almost to the base into 5-7 lobes, lobes again divided into about 6 mm
broad segments dentate along margin; flowers 1.5 cm long.

On that basis Naliniji's plant is clearly Pelargonium graveolens, and so is
that of Arjun ji. There is some mix up of names. P. crispum is lemon geranium
(that must have led Tanay to give this name) or Crisped-leaf geranium and P.
graveolens the rose geranium or rose-scent geranium. But that in no way should
affect the identification. Photograph of the plant is here with us.

  Here are some links:

  http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/43430/

  http://sc.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pelargonium_crispum1.jpg

But then there is a lot of confusion and mix up there on the internet, the
images having been mixed up. That must also be reason for mix up of the names.
But my description is based on famous book "Manual of Cultivated Plants" by L.
H. Bailey

2010-08-01 Thread Tabish
Dear Gurcharan ji,
This one doesn't look like Cerastium fontanum subsp. triviale to
me, which is now treated synonymous with Cerastium fontanum subsp.
vulgare. Petals are supposed to be shorted than sepals in that
species. However, in your flower the petals are distinctly longer than
the sepals.
To me it looks like Cerastium dahuricum (alternate spelling
Cerastium davuricum), with notched petals longer than sepals and stem-
clasping leaves

Re: [efloraofindia:43142] Re: please id this medicinal plant

2010-08-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Nalini ji
This is why I love this group. There are people with little or no botanical
knowledge, but their knowledge about plants is amazing. Your knowledge about
plants, I suppose is second to none, and your enthusiasm unparalleled. That
is the beauty of the nature. You can know it if you have desire to do so. I
remember, when I was struggling to differentiate various species of
Brassica, my mother showed me few days old young plants with barely three or
four leaves and could tell me difference between what we call mustards and
coles. I have learnt many things about plants from her, and imagine she
never went to school. Here on our group also there are several nonbotanists,
Garg ji, Dinesh ji, Tabish ji, Yazdy ji, you, to name a few (others pl.
excuse me for not naming them) who are both the engine and the oil for this
group. We are lucky to be the part of this group. Perhaps my interest in
plants (nature) would not have been renewed, had I not joined this group. I
would have remained at armchair botanist.
This group has also changed working style of we botanists (at least
me). Earlier if we got a new plant, we would collect our books, get hold of
microscope, needle, brush and blade, and sit for hours to identify the
unknown plant, and may still be sometimes unsuccessful, and then send the
plant or photograph to an expert or a mailing group (TAXACOM was my
favourite then). Now I do the reverse. Whenever, I get a new plant, I
immediately send the photograph to our group, and ninety per cent of the
times or more I get identification (or important clues) within minutes. Only
if I don't get identification here, I sit with the plant and books/internet,
or enlarge photograph on my computer and attempt its identification.
The group has also changed my working philosophy. We were told by our
elders/teachers that you should tell the identification only if you are 100
% sure. If we follow this policy, not 10 % of plants would get identified.
We here have invented a new strategy (and I advocate it strongly), just
throw a wild guess (don't hesitate about it), it will initiate rigorous
search by other members to reach the correct identity. And this I think is
the trademark of this group. And this we do exchanging light hearted
comments to keep the spirit on. There was a lot of knowledge and goodwill
involved about the LATIN NAMKARAN CEREMONY OF DINESH JI YESTERDAY.

Let the spirit continue, and as they say "IS GROUP KO KISSI KI NAZAR NA LAG
JAI"

Tabish ji
Thanks for pointing out the petals length. It, however, does not look like
C. davuricum in which the plants are much taller, leaves much broader at
base (ovate) and clasping.

http://www.efloras.org/object_page.aspx?object_id=39189&flora_id=2

My plant may be C. fontanum var. grandiflorum perhaps, the leaves are
clearly elliptic-lanceolate. Let us continue the search.

Can the family have such fruits and the fruits are attached to woody stem
