Re: [IRCA] HD Radios - snap them up!!
I will add my 2 cents. hi. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have had excellent luck with rebates at Rite Aid & Costco. I either do it on line or snail mail. I am sure I have (so far) never lost one. I don't do it all the time, but I have on blank CDs & DVD's, the computer printers, etc and I have gotten them all. But I am not fond of them. They take time and you have to go through pages on the sites to get it done sometimes. Give me a coupon I can take up to the checkstand and that is better. Re: [IRCA] Programming the R8B for splits
Doug, You can scan through the channels much quicker running the splits in the memories. With the R8 only having 100, I cannot include them all unfortunately, but severalk I don't DX much anyway. I use 2.3 khz either USB or LSD, depending on the freq. Re: [IRCA] CFPR 860
Mike, KPAM was there as usual, off the Eastern beverage. CFPR pretty much owns the channel here at night. KPAM throws their signal to the SW at night dropping to 5KW. Even off the Eastern beverage they get QRM. KPAM days is one of the stronger Portland area stations along with KXL & KPOJ. Nick, It was just a fair morning here. A few CC in, but not the dial hopping there was a few days ago. I noted no Filipinos, but Hebei China was good for a time around 1430 on 1278 and CNR1 was good on 918. A few JJs and KK's and that was about it. Re: [IRCA] 1020 Rel
MIke, I bought the S350 before the 2005 convention as I was not happy carrying the SuperRadio on a plane. But in using the S350 off and on for now a year, it is not nearly as good as the SuperRadio in my opinion. It works, but it does have more garbage on the band. Out here I don't get overload, but at times I do get a birdie from SW or something. Re: [IRCA] Importance of IF skirts + B FOXWORTH
John, A great article. I also agree the SP 600 was quite the radio. I used one for over 10 years and I loved it. Unfortunately I had to sell it, as I could no longer could use it with the electric fence nearby. But those crystal filters and the phasing were excellent. I do miss the radio at times, but without a noise blanker, it was hard to DX with it. I heard a lot of great DX with it, but still using the R8 with ECSS, it works circles around anything else I have used. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://arizona.hard-core-dx.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Are They or Aren't They?
The only IBOCer I hear that gives me trouble days is KEX 1190 Portland at 75 air miles away. Generally they use it from LSR to LSS and during the Summer to 6 PM. They do a number on 1180 & 1200, but I can get KLAY 1180 Lakewood WA if I phase out the IBOC, but it leaves KLAY weaker. Once in a great while KEX's IBOC is off, especially on the weekends. KHHO 850 Tacoma uses it, but with KSWB on 840 ans KPAM on 860, it is not an issue. KHHO is received here during the day alright, they sufer from splash unless KSWB is nulled or phased. Other than that, the only IBOC hash I get is from stations like KCBS 740 KCVR 1570 in the mornings. KIXI 880 is going IBOC I have heard. With the change of events and some turning it off, they may have a change of heart too. Some feel IBOC will not be on at nights because of the extreme QRM. I think if IBOC does not go nights, then most stations will drop AM IBOC. Why bother? Re: [IRCA] Dump AM IBOC, Move the AM Band, re:HDTV comment
Neil and Mike, Yes, a good HDTV set has a wonderful pix. You have many more lines of resolution. HDTV is not anyway like HD Radio. HDTV is an improvement where HD Radio is not. Two different animals. Also no one has to buy a HDTV set, if they don't want to. It is like going from a Ford to a Lincoln, so to speak. The Ford will get you from place to place just fine, but the Lincoln has more comfort. I have not bought an HDTV set as yet, but I plan to. I am still looking around. An HD Radio set, I will never buy. I want better quality, not worse quality.

[IRCA] Chinese QSL's
I was going through my Chinese QSLs tonight. I have 36 from mainland China, 14 from Taiwan, and 2 from Hong Kong. One thing I noticed from mainland Chinese, how many of the stations do not exist on their old frequencies from even the early 80s. I pay attention to Australian & New Zealand changes, but not Chinese for the most part. But I have several QSL'd that are no longer listed in the PAL or WRTH. One main difference are the names. Today it is China National Radio (CNR) and in the 80s it was Central People's Broadcasting Station (CPBS).

Russ, You can buy a digital converter. Like out here there is no HDTV and unless the translators go HDTV, we will not have it. I have Dish and I could buy an HD TV Set, HD receiver and pay more for HD programming, but why bother? I don't watch the network fare much anyway, except news. It is too expensive for what I would get out of it. I am into old TV shows and those are not in HD much as yet either. Digital is on the horizon OTA (over the air), but not HD, at least not out here. I do have digital already with my Dish system and even the Big Dish with 4DTV, Mpeg. Plus with over 2,000 channels off the birds, I get HD is something I really don't need. At least now. Scott, You are absolutely right. Direct & Dish already use digital, but it is converted to analog to your set. The same is true for all of my Mpeg & 4DTV stuff for the big dish. Unless you are watching OTA in 2009 (If they don't move the date), you will not have to change one thing. Nothing. If you are on cable, you wont have to change either. It is only OTA (over the air). I have the computer with DVD recording, plus two stand alone units. Plus my satellite equip. is new with digital Mpeg, Star Choice, 4DTV. Yes, I still have record players that still play 78s and also an 8 track machine. So I have most of the technology through the years still in use. I just add stuff, I don't throw it away unles it wears out. hi. 99% of my TV recording is on DVD now. All of my reception reports now I enclose a CD. So I think I am up to date except for HDTV. That is down the road a bit. But I will get one in time, if nothing else to get the best quality from my DVDs. My TV set is a 1988 Radio Shack set, you might have noticed. hi. As far as the LCD/DLP HDTV sets go, I am told there is one issue. The tube type still looks the best, but things are moving to the LCD/DLP types, but the issue is with the bulb in the set. They tend to burn out and they cost $200-$400 each! But the tube type HDTV sets are little by little going away. [IRCA] KKPZ 1330 is now IBOC
Greetings, I tuning across the dial today, I found KKPZ 1330 Portland now IBOC as predicted. Anyway, it is not much of an issue here and I thought. The noise is there, but a bit of adjusting of the passband tuning I can get rid of 90% of it no matter what antenna I am using. Of course it is stronger on the 1500' Eastern beverage, but not much of a big issue. KEX is much more of an issue. Off the 45' vertical KXRO 1320 is totally in the clear. Now if all IBOC was this poor, it would be easier to get around! But I am sure as skip angles vary and all their IBOC noise will vary too.
Re: [IRCA] Dump AM IBOC, Move the AM Band, re:HDTV comment
Kevin, HDTV is not mandated. Digital TV is and it is only over the air. Those who have Direct TV, Dish, or cable will not be affected. The only thing here will be the over the air translators. I guess if I want to continue getting Portland TV, I will have to get a digital tuner. I will, or maybe I will buy an HDTV set by that time. But no, HDTV is not mandated, just going digital is. Are there are digital TV sets out there now that are not HDTV? I have not seen any analog sets with a digital tuner inside. Some HDTV sets even come without the digital tuner. That is not going to do the OTA viewers much good, but again most people are wired for satellite or cable anyway.

[IRCA] QSLing
Greetings, I recently received a correct reception report for KAVT, which many of you know, I am handling the QSLing for the CE. The reporter posted an interesting question. I thought I would ask for your input. I am sure this question has been asked and discussed in the past, but here I go. I was asked by the KAVT CE to handle the QSLing. I am happy to do it. I get a kick out of all of the places the station is heard. I do enjoy it, like I enjoy getting QSLs myself. But the reporter asked the question, since the QSL is not coming directly from the station, is the QSL legal? I fiqure it is as I have the permission to handle the QSLs. But is it? I count all of my QSLs either from the station or from a person that is OKed to QSL the report. It is like the Committee to Preserve QSLs back East. They only eccept certain kinds of QSLs. They do not want any prepared cards or CB QSLs. I don't know if they will accept e mail QSLs or not. But I do know there are purists out there that will not accept anything but a card or letter from the station. That person must not get too many QSLs these days then. Getting that letter or card from the station is getting harder to do. The CE asks many times now that "Is there something I can just sign?" I guess you would go to the station and ask the PD or GM to type you out a QSL. But even at local KAST, the GM says they only QSL via e mail now. So the rules have to be changed. What worked years ago will no longer work now, purist or not. But I wanted to kick this out and see what other DXers think. To start it out, myself, I will accept about anything confirmming my reception on the letter, ppc, e mail, FAX, anything. I would rather have the letter or card, but it this day we are very fortunate to get anything back. I welcome your comments. Re: [IRCA] QSLing
Hi Martin, I agree 100%. However, the "Powers that be" the rule makers so to speak. What are their rules? Or do we have any these days? I know back in the 60s & 70s, QSLs came under alot of "do's and don'ts". What is accepted and what isn't. There were those "full detail" QSLers that started that unless the QSL had full details, it would not be counted. The rules were set up that you could not DX any farther than 35 miles from your QTH and still count the catch. Many other such rules used to be around. I never hear of any of those rules today. Another were the country lists. Each club had a different list of "DX Countries". Of course a ARRL has a totally different set up on counting countries. Like you, I count any QSL, be it from the janitor. hi. I don't think I have any janitors that QSL'd me though. But with the note from the DXer, I was wondering what others thought about it. It is nice to have your feedback. Your feelings are the same as mine. As you stated, QSLing today is much different. Even 27 years ago when I returned to the coast, QSLs were much easier to get. PPC's were not all that common. Even in the 80s it was great. Into the 90s, still not bad. But into this century, things started to change. As you said, you have to work hard to get that QSL today.
Re: [IRCA] QSLing
Doug, Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. I totally agree with you. The Hams have accepted QSL Bureaus for years. I wish we had them in MW QSLing more. People like Les Rayburn and Patrick Griffith are really assets to our hobby. Without people like them, QSLs would be much harder to get, if at all. In my case, I can hear KAVT about any night, so checking the details is easy and I know the format well enough. Plus generally I like an audio source sent with the report, then QSLing is much easier. People can cheat, but they are only cheating themselves. If getting QSLs are that important to people, why not buy them off ebay? In the several years I have been QSLing KAVT, I have only gotten one report that was a cheat. The report was from Italy by the way. I have had a few tentatives and most I could QSL. But only one bad report in all of this time. So not bad. 99.9% of people are honest. There are a few bad apples out there. But not many. But again thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. When Chuck Boehnke of Hawaii passed away a couple years back, his wife sent Chuck's QSLs to the Committee and they were only interested in certain QSLs. Chuck had no ppcs as he did not like them, but all of his historic CD QSLs from the 50s, Ginny was going to toss. I had her send them to me. I have them, but I don't know what to do with them. I would like to donate them to me preserved in history. I had no idea the Committee was pickey on what QSL's they would take. I have had no direct contact with the Committee myself.
Re: [IRCA] QSLing
Russ, I think you are right on that in today's world. I don't see the "QSL Police" out there in the clubs dictating what is a QSL and what isn't. Not like I used to hear about 40 years ago. I don't see the egos out there either like in the 60s. hi. QSLing has dropped off a lot through the years. Infact some DXers consider QSLing a thing of the past and they are worthless to them. My QSL collection is very valuable to me and I have had well over 40 years of collectioning them.

I have not paid attention to exactly how long it has taken a posting I have sent to reach me. But I know I am not getting the postings in order like I used to. Maybe a posting that was sent at 2:27 AM might reach me after one was sent at 2:42 AM. Some postings have showed up twice too. One 4 or 5 days ago showed up a couple days late and then it showed up again a week later. Strange. I hope all of this dies down. The postings to the NRC list have been within minutes. The IRCA postings can be minutes to days. Lately they have been minutes to hours at least.
Re: [IRCA] QSL'ing: a couple more thoughts
Jim, Yes, QSLs are the icing on the cake. They always have been. Sure, taping the station will prove you heard it, and like many I do have hundreds of IDs of stations on tapes. I don't count them though. I just record them so when I send out a report I can prove to the station easily I did receive their station. Then if I need to send a follow up, having the tape there, it is easy to send it out again. At one time when I started QSLing back in 1965, it was the thing of how many stations I can get QSL'd. But now after QSLing for so many years, it is the historical value. I QSL stations under all call letter changes. It is neat to have a station QSL'd through all of that history. Often, I know more about a station's history that the people that work there. Following station history has become a side-line to DXing for me. The QSL collection goes hand in hand with that too. Just recently touring KAST Astoria, I was commenting to the GM who gave the tour to the IRCA convention, about KAST coming by side car in 1925 from Klamath Falls and setting up in Astoria. The station came on in 1922 in K Falls. George Resola, their CE back in the 60s told me all about that. The station was on 1230 then too. It later moved to 1370 in the 30s. The GM did not know all of that. He mentioned he knew the station was around in the 30s though. But there is a lot of history that does go into QSLing. In the past, several CEs have typed me up a complete history of the station. Amazing stuff. Unfortunately with changes, a lot of that has been lost. Looking through the QSLs, I have so many that the stations don't even exist any longer. It is especially neat to have have a letter or QSL card from those stations. They are a piece of broadcasting history. I can't imagine what it was like to QSL in the early days like Ernie Cooper. I am sure he had many "long gone" stations QSL'd. Like Ernie, as he stated once, it is really neat to be sitting and looking through the QSLs on a rainy day.

Re: [IRCA] QSLing
Jim, Yes, I figured this subject would get a bit of interest. Even though some may not QSL much today, they did in the past. I never had much trouble getting QSLs in the 60s. When I started in 1965, I did not have much money and I sent all of my reports out on 4 cent post cards. No rp, but as a High School kid in the 60s, most of us did not have money. But it was interesting, I still got 95% return. It was amazing. Living in Alaska may have helped too. But my return rate on the first report was amazing. I did not know any different, but compared to today, it was a different world. Of couse by the late 60s I was writing letters and enclosing the rp. But my return rate did not change much. Apparently the station was more "PR" in those days and cared more about hearing from distant listeners. Even in the 70s and 80s, my return rate on my first report was still 80% or better. In the 90s it started to drop, but still was good. Generally a follow up would get that QSL. But since the turn of the century things changed drastically. The days of the letter/QSL card are mostly over. There are exceptions, but today it is e mail or ppc. Personally I wish stations would start to QSL via e mail over a ppc anyway. The e mail QSL is nicer and it should not be an issue to QSL that way. The GM at KAST QSLs via e mail, from the old days of a letter. The e mail QSL is free too. No postage to worry about. Some DXers QSL 100% e mail too. Now if we could get all of the stations to do that too.

Re: [IRCA] Dump AM IBOC, Move the AM Band, re:HDTV comment
Kevin, That is fine "if" you have an inexpensive source to get your HDTV from. In my case, I would have to buy the set and then buy the satellite receiver and in some cases pay for a sub to get the HD TV. Too much money out here. Now in the future that may change. The only reason I can see to buy HDTV now is to watch my DVDs. The quality is better. [IRCA] KKOL 1300
I think KKOL is going to have a time getting into NW Oregon, especially from the Fall to Spring during the day. Winter cx have set in and skip is wild during the day. CKMX-1060 is S9+15DB as I type this at 11:40 AM (PDT), High River on 1140 noted, CBR 1010, under Portland and KKPL 1300 Medford is dominant off all of my antennas except the Eastern beverage. KACI is dominant with KKPL behind it. Not a peep out on KKOL off the ship I presume. KKPL is S9+10 DB. Their 20 KW has quite the signal in the NW running ND days. I doubt KKOL is going to have much signal South, but probably quite the signal to the North. [IRCA] DX Conditions 10/20
Greetings, Not a bad morning after the heavy solar activity the last couple of days. Conditions bounced back a bit with some CC in this morning with decent signals. 918 CRN2 was fair with echo CC, 945 was // to 981. CRI 1044 in JJ noted. Also CC on 1071, CRI 1323 in RR. The powerhouse JJ were ok in signal, but not over powering. KK 972 was strong. CC on 639 at 1430 also. One interesting side note, with the addition on the WNW EWE a few months back, I find that one picks up my neighbors light dimmer, leaving the SW EWE clear of the noise. Before I added the NWN EWE, the SW EWE got more noise. The WNW EWE does pick up TPs a bit better that the SW EWE in many cases, but we are splitting hairs. But it is nice the WNW EWE is working as a noise pick up antenna. I am not talking about big noise anyway and it is only below 750 khz. Another side note, the latest addition of KKPZ 1330 adding IBOC, I found this morning that the WNW EWE has a beautiful null on KKPZ. Off the SW EWE I do get a bit of IBOC hash on CRI 1323 in RR, but off the WNW EWE, no IBOC hash. Off the SW EWE KKPZ 1330 is about S9, off the WNW EWE it is S7 or so. Just enough difference to distroy the hash. So I guess the secret is to have antennas that give you no more than about S7 picking up an IBOC signal on an IBOC signal, But that is not always possible. hi.

Re: [IRCA] KKOL
Dan, Thanks. 159 degrees would put a null towards The Dalles OR (1300-KACI) and 260 would put a null towards Aberdeen (1320-KXRO). Then at about 230 degrees (my direction), they probably put little signal also I would guess. If they protect 1320 KXRO, I presume they will protect 1280 Tumwater WA too. 1290 would not be much of an issue, with Portland gone, and Port Angeles going, but their 1300 KACI null would also protect KUMA 1290 Pendleton OR. 1310 Newport OR would be far enough not to be an issue, as Newport is over 100 air miles down the coast from me and I am over 100 miles from Vashion Island too. . But having their site on Vashion Island, they can easily pipe their signal North to cover most of the Puget Sound area.
