Once we unchecked priority and everything else, it now works.

With both Jaws 16 and 17, when composing an email in windows mail all the

I believe this would solve his wlm inbox issue.

To change whether the messages in a folder are sorted in ascending or
descending order:
1.On the View tab, press the Sort order menu button, which is in the
Arrangement group.
2.The menu which opens contains the two options ascending and descending,
and the current option is checked. Choose the option which you want.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Punctuation,Differences Between Jaws Options &
Customize Punctuation Settings

This is a note on the difference between changing punctuation settings in
Jaws options, Insert + V, & customize punctuation in the default settings
center / configuration manager. They work backwards from one another.

When setting punctuation in Jaws options / quick settings, this controls the
amount of
punctuation JAWS will speak / recognize. The default setting is most. To
hear less
punctuation spoken you would select some or none.

When making changes in the customize punctuation list, this basically tells
Jaws how much of a selected punctuation mark to ignore. If you do not want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the
" all " selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through. They are none, some, most, & all. In these selections they work
backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose " none "
for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the " all "
radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

Hope this helps some of you understand the differences between the 2
punctuation setting options.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] If you're not ready for Win10, beware of Windows Update

2015-12-03 Thread Don & Cher
A windows update which came down yesterday afternoon, installed Win10
without my permission. The automatic update brought up a screen about
downloading Win10. MS had downloaded Win10 months ago, but this screen made
me question what I knew. There were 2 options- "download and upgrade" and
"download but do not upgrade". I selected the last option- thinking that
either I had been mistaken about Win10 already being fully downloaded or
that the major updates to Win10 required a new download of Win10.

However, after the download, I started seeing a 'preparing to install'
message and this morning was presented with a license accept screen. I
called the accessibility desk to uninstall and hide this update. I don't
plan on installing till early spring when I will have more time. I hope no
one else will get caught unprepared as I did last night ;)

Ron,

If WLM is anything like Windows Mail or OE, then look for the view menu, and
perhaps a separate menu for "sort by". Change Descending to Ascending.
Otherwise, you may be able to reverse by using your JAWS cursor and the left
mouse click to tap on the column heading for the received date.

[JAWS-Users] can ribbon menus be removed in windows 10

2015-12-03 Thread David Bailes
Hi Joanne,
although you can't disable the ribbons, there are at least a couple of ways of
changing the view setting which don't involve using the ribbon.
The first is to use shortcuts. Press ctrl+alt+5 for a list view, and press
ctrl+alt+6 for a details view. (Note these shortcuts were ctrl+shift+number in
windows 8 and 8.1).
The second is that with no items selected in the items view (you can press
ctrl+spacebar to deselect an item if necessary), you can open a context menu,
which contains a view sub menu.

I feel the exact same way. I think ribbons are evil and unnecessary.
Why create layers of hidden menus when the menu bar used to show all
that could be done, and which was so much more accessible?
I will avoid them till I can no longer. Hopefully, by then I will be
able to use my voice to get done what I need, if I live that long.

presents many approaches to the handling of apps and various
work-arounds using Jaws. We're all learning, and for those of us who
don't always understand new apps or layouts I appreciate help from those
who can present an easier or, to me, familiar way of reaching my goals.

I wouldn't mind learning more about ribbons and maybe there's a tutorial
to explain them. But they don't make sense to me and I can't picture
their layout or how to find their menus. Someone suggested turning the
virtual ribbon feature off in Jaws and I know many others use it. I'd
be glad to hear an explanation of what exactly they are and how to find
the menus you need. I am using older email programs for this very
reason--ribbons don't make sense. So if there's a tutorial that
explains them thoroughly I would check one out if anyone knows of one.

But in the meantime I'm so relieved there are still other ways to avoid
them till I learn more.

[JAWS-Users] Opening PDF documents in Acrobat Reader instead of a browser such as IE, revisited

2015-12-03 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

I had made the changes to the Adobe Reader startup Accessibility Assistant
and accessibility preferences that were recommended by FS. PDF documents
were being opened in Adobe Reader as expected until I accepted the download
and installation of the latest version of Adobe Reader, titled Adobe Acrobat
Reader DC, version 15.009.20079. Now, when I press enter or space on a web
site link to download a PDF document, it just opens up in a new IE window.
This new IE window has no menus, including the context menu brought up by
the applications key or shift F10, no link and no buttons to be able to
download it. The PDF document is processed by Adobe reader and can be read
with JAWS. But there is no way to save it to my computer. I know that on
some web sites, when I'm positioned on a link, I can bring up the context
menu and press enter on the Save as option to download the document. But
many of the sites from which I download PDF documents, the save as option is
grayed and unavailable. This behavior exists using both JAWS 16 and 17.

Hi Group,

This morning I receive an email from FS support on how to make PDF files
open in a separate window in IE. Below is the instructions. They seem to be
a lot easier then what I sent out yesterday. I have not tried it as I got my
Adobe working with the instructions I gave you yesterday. So if you try FS
instructions and it workds for you please email back and let the group know.
Below is the instructions from FS.

How to get Adobe Reader to open in its own window by Freedom Scientific

You actually make this change in the Adobe Reader application using the
instructions below:

A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant

When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant
opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open
it:

1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu.

2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu.

3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog
box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page.

4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it
is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three.

5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is
OK. Press ENTER to move to page four.

6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of
headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change
the radio button from

"For large documents, only read the currently visible pages"

to

"Read the entire document at once."

If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links
and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the
current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire
document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large
documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in
the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find.

7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant.

8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked,
you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until
you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and
uncheck it.

9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button.

B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences.

1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences.

2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose
Accessibility.

3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked
by default) - check this.

4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security
(Enhanced).

5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by
default) - uncheck this.

6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR.

NOTE: The option to view PDF documents in the browser is no longer found in
the Preferences. You must use the Set Up Assistant to find this

This is the option you want to make sure you change so it will not show the
PDF files in the browser.

Be sure to include all previous correspondence pertaining to this matter
when replying to this message so that we might better

assist you.

[JAWS-Users] My shortcut keys

2015-12-03 Thread Reed Poynter
Hello,

I have assigned control+alt+J to my JAWS 16 shortcut on my desktop. I have
assigned shift+control+J to JAWS 15.

Under Windows 7, is there a way to show a list of these shortcut key
assignments that I've made? Or, is there a program that will do this for
me?

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Reading of Roman Numerals

2015-12-03 Thread Annette Carr
Hi all,

I am using Windows7, Office 2010 and JAWS16 on both my work and personal
laptops. When outlining information using Roman Numerals in MS-Word and
Outlook, JAWS is reading I I as a number 2, and I I I as number 3. JAWS
reads all other Roman numerals phonetically. I'm finding this confusing. I
just switched over to JAWS14, and found that the problem also exists with
this combination. Does anyone know of a way to have JAWS read all Roman
numerals phonetically?

Thanks,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] copying over all JFW16 settings to JFW17

Hi gang.
The freedom scientific JAWS17 web page has a section called 'Merge Utility'
where it basically says that due to some key changes made in JFW17, the merge
utility option has been intentionally removed by FS. Has anyone tried to just
copy the ENU folder from JAWS16 and replaced the default ENU folder in JAWS17
with it and if so has that successfully copied over all your 16 settings to 17?

There is no better time to up grade to win10 than now. It is twice as fast,

Hello Mike,
I have two reasons for responding to your original message.
Can you send me the procedure for setting up Adobe Acrobat to open in the
manner you described?

Once your .pdf document is displayed, can you virtualize the screen and copy
the document in that way?
The only issue I can see there is that you'd have an interesting challenge
with documents having multiple pages.

Hi Group,

This morning I receive an email from FS support on how to make PDF files

a lot easier then what I sent out yesterday. I have not tried it as I got my
Adobe working with the instructions I gave you yesterday. So if you try FS

Re: [JAWS-Users] can ribbon menus be removed in windows 10

2015-12-03 Thread joanne
I hope I won't get in trouble for possibly making this more of a thank you
message, and yes those can clutter an in box. But I do want to say that,
for example, in the case of ribbons, I appreciated David Bales' suggestions
and they worked beautifully. I like that this group presents many
approaches to the handling of apps and various work-arounds using Jaws.
We're all learning, and for those of us who don't always understand new apps
or layouts I appreciate help from those who can present an easier or, to me,
familiar way of reaching my goals.

I wouldn't mind learning more about ribbons and maybe there's a tutorial to
explain them. But they don't make sense to me and I can't picture their
layout or how to find their menus. Someone suggested turning the virtual
ribbon feature off in Jaws and I know many others use it. I'd be glad to
hear an explanation of what exactly they are and how to find the menus you
need. I am using older email programs for this very reason--ribbons don't
make sense. So if there's a tutorial that explains them thoroughly I would
check one out if anyone knows of one.

But in the meantime I'm so relieved there are still other ways to avoid them
till I learn more.

Joanne
