Re: [Koha] n-Tier deployment of Koha
Hi :) On 22-07-28 02:49, dc...@prosentient.com.au wrote: Off the top of my head, technically you could have a load balancer in front of multiple Koha application servers. You'd want to make sure that the cronjobs are only running on 1 application server though. You also would probably want to use an external Elasticsearch cluster since Zebra would be a bottleneck. In theory, you could use a multi-master MySQL/MariaDB database cluster, but I don't know if anyone has done that (and I'd be concerned about the "eventual consistency" of multi-master setups). If you wanted to a master-replica cluster, you'd need to patch Koha to allow for read-only connections (for things like the Reports module); at the moment, Koha can only use 1 read/write database connection. Are there MariaDB front end/load balancers than could route the read queries to one of the multiple read only replicas? And the write queries to the main server. That would allow to not change apps. So in the end the only non-horizontally-scalable thing would be DB writes? (unless multi-master eventual consistency works) In the long-term I'd love to make Koha easier to scale horizontally (and ideally deploy as a load-balanced containerized application) but there's work to do and not much demand for it from libraries, so I don't think it's a priority for devs at the moment, unfortunately. Ideally the largest Koha installations would have contributed back/funded scalability improvement. Maybe they did, I don't know the history. So it's a matter of priority of upstreaming changes while having already a lot to deal with. That might show the largest installations are underfunded and have no margin for upstreaming :( Cheers, -- Victor Grousset/tuxayo ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz Unsubscribe: https://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
[Koha] To companies selling Koha but rarely contributing or self-hosted libraries: testing enhancements or bug fixes is one of the easiest ways to give back and keep your product relevant in the futur
Hello :) To companies in Asia, like India or Pakistan (Koha seems very popular there :D) or any other country, be it in the Americas, Europe or Africa: If you are making a living out of Koha, it's a good and cheap business decision to test one or two patches from time to time. So you take part in keeping Koha competitive on the long run and secure all the time you invested in learning how to deploy and use it. That will help to ensure your customers will stay satisfied with Koha staying a state of the art ILS. Maybe there are bugfixes or enhancements that you are waiting to be released? There are more than 180 enhancements or bug fixes waiting and that means most of them wait months and some years to be released. It wastes a lot of developer time to keep the proposed patches working when the rest of Koha changes. So there is a big need to have more people test patches to rebalance the Koha development process and remove this big bottleneck. Again, cheap in time, it's doing your part in exchange for the software you got for free ready to be sold/use, and a long run investment to keep it a good sellable product. See my previous email about planning testing sessions: https://lists.katipo.co.nz/pipermail/koha/2022-July/058259.html Don't hesitate to message me if you want to try on your own outside the testing sessions. I will be very happy to help anyone that want to start testing patches from time to time. Re: [Koha] Fwd: New Koha minor versions released - security fixes included, UPGRADE!
Hello, On 21-09-27 18:01, Tom Burke wrote: Can I seek a bit of reassurance, please? We have a server running several instances which is currently on 19.11.00.000. Obviously we want to upgrade this. We have tried doing a significant upgrade (to 20.11) on a test site, and have run into some issues which we are still investigating. We might therefore decide to meet the present security-driven upgrade requirement by simply going from 19.11.00 to 19.11.22 . Is it safe to assume that there is no schema change in such an upgrade? There are a few data migrations and schema changes https://git.koha-community.org/Koha-community/Koha/src/branch/19.11.x/installer/data/mysql/updatedatabase.pl#L20256 Which the DB upgrade script handles. [Koha] Ukrainian speaker(s) needed to fix a translation issue
Hello, The way the translation for Ukrainian is configured IIUC says that there is one singular and 2 plural forms. And a check for the following strings says that there should be {count} in the 1st form. So the singular should have the number of archived suggestions? I guess it will insert "1" so the translation for the 1st form should be done in a way that replacing {count} with "1" should be valid. Assuming the language config is correct. https://translate.koha-community.org/uk/20.05/translate/uk-UA-messages.po#unit=14371535 https://translate.koha-community.org/uk/20.11/translate/uk-UA-messages.po#unit=16651087 https://translate.koha-community.org/uk/21.05/translate/uk-UA-messages.po#unit=18945864 What should actually be the translation? [Koha] Turkish speaker(s) needed to fix a translation issue
Hello, If someone can reach a speaker, this should be simple. If something about the translation process is unclear, ask in the list or directly, I'll be glad to help. So, as part of the work to release this month's minor Koha versions, a few string translations have been found to generate errors. These errors on even small pieces of text can lead to major translation breakage not just on the invalid string. But no worries, they are manually marked for exclusion each month when releasing but the best thing would be to have the string correct. Here they are: https://translate.koha-community.org/tr/20.05/translate/tr-TR-messages.po#unit=14327537 https://translate.koha-community.org/tr/20.11/translate/tr-TR-messages.po#unit=16606095 https://translate.koha-community.org/tr/21.05/translate/tr-TR-messages.po#unit=18899398 The {count} isn't there, it's used to insert the correct number of suggestion when displaying. And the translation aren't consisted between the 3 versions. Re: [Koha] Koha 18.11, Debian GNU/Linux 9 and MariaDB 10.3

Has someone done > this already? That's coming earlier that I though. Thanks for info. So the question has been asked in the mailing list that seems to be related to maintenance of MariaDB in Debian: https://alioth-lists.debian.net/pipermail/pkg-mysql-maint/2020-July/013967.html Let's hope for the answer. > Will Koha 18.11 still work with Debian GNU/Linux 9, and if yes, how > could the update be done? You mean Debian 9 with MariaDB 10.3 right? Not upgrading to Debian 10. I can tell you about MariaDB 10.3 that there is experimental support for Koha 19.05.x https://koha-community.org/koha-19-05-13-released/#systemrequirements The test suite passes without issues and experimental support is advertised since Dec 2019 (19.05.06) and it *seems* no bug have been reported. About Debian 10 I'm sure you will have to backport some patches. I remember that in the last months there was quite some work to support Debian 10. And that it didn't make it to 19.05 So Koha 18.11 on Debian 10 might quite the hassle. I case you can't upgrade to a least 19.05.x, (only one version might be less disruptive for the users) though a higher version would be better. It seems doable to make your Koha 18.11 work with MariaDB 10.3. Given that all the necessary patches should be in 19.05.x though I have not an easy way to find them. ^^" Other than having a test instance, getting the errors and searching in bugzilla. But let's wait to get the confirmation that MariaDB 10.1 will still get security updates. Someone on IRC (#debian) told me yes so it seems to be the case. That is actually very important to maybe start advertising a 10.4 support as experimental (at least) depending on the number of positive feedbacks. Which version of Koha are you using with MariaDB 10.4? [Koha] Koha: Welsh speaker(s) needed to fix a translation issue
Hello, If someone can reach a Welsh translator, this should be simple. As part of the work to release this month's minor Koha versions, a few string translations have been found to generate errors. These errors on even small piece of text can lead to major translation breakage not just on the invalid string. But no worries, they were manually marked for exclusion but the best thing would be to have the string correct and complete.
