Re: [lace] ebay tatted coasters

2005-05-19 Thread Laceandbits
Having been away for a couple of days, I'm a bit late picking up on some of
these threads but...

The change of description is there, but as someone else said, I'm inclined to
think these are modern, commercial Chinese or whatever, not Granny-made.

What did amuse me however is if you scroll to below the change of description
there is a bid retraction from Brenda saying If these are bobbinlace I
would rather not purchase them. Is that a problem?

No problem as far as the seller is concerned but I do wonder about Brenda who
apparently only collects tatting but then can't see the difference between it
and bobbin lace. Hi-ho, it's the peculiarities of life that make it so
interesting.

Sue, as a tatter I am not offended just frustrated that most people can't
recognize the differences between the laces. So many times, at demos, folks
will
confuse tatting with crochet or bobbin lace. I have had it also confused
with drop spindle spinning (amazingly enough)!

So no offense. I am glad the seller did correct her statements.

Sorry - that sounds offensive to tatters. It wasn't meant to read like
that - just that the piece on EBay is clearly not tatting and it would be
impossible to produce those results (eg half stitch diamonds) in tatting

This corrected information may or may not appear on the listing. Changes
can be made only before the first bid is received. Also, some sellers will
not change a listing once they have put it in. Maybe it costs more to
change it.

My thought when I read that the Grandmother had made this tatting was
whether or not she had lived in China. This looks much like doilies that
came out of China in the past. I'm betting her Grandmother purchased
these, just like my Grandmother purchased some similar ones many years ago.

You could make an interesting collection of things listed as 'tatting' on eBay.

I surely do agree with Alice. I, in fact, saw the same, or similar,
coasters sold in sets of 4 several years ago. I don't recall the cost,
but they were clearly marked Made in China. I did buy an oval piece 5 x 8
inches for a nominal price, which I don't recall but was probably about $5,
otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. They were sold at Kirklands (a chain
which deals in gift/home decor/imports/unusual stuff) located in the local
mega-mall.

I just had a look at the coasters. The seller has changed her description:

Several of you have written these doilies/coasters are handmade bobbin lace. A
different stitch technique than tatting.

Everyone has been so kind to help out here~ (Especially Patty - a lacemaker and
someone who studies the history of lace) Although these are handmade, tatting
is worked differently than bobbin lace.

I wrote my description and title based on information the estate owner from whom
I purchased this set gave me. She said her grandmother had tatted these many
years ago. At any rate, they are vintage, dainty, and beautifully stitched. A
nice addition for any collector. Hope this helps with any bidding decisions.

Best wishes,
