[LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Every time I exit Legacy I do a back up to an external hard drive. When I was using Legacy 7.5 it remembered my settings and automatically backed up to where I wanted it on the external drive. However when I exit v8 it automatically defaults to the C/ drive for back ups and I have to change it to the E/ hard drive every time. I have checked the user manual and the help in the programme but cannot find how to set the default backup to the E/ hard drive. Any suggestions please? RE: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Hi Anne, Sorry I don't have an answer to this - I also changed the location for backup of both data and media and they have definitely stuck for me. I do not backup to external / removable drives - I wonder if that makes a difference. It sounds like it's not finding the default settings - did you move the location of these files? Others might be able to make suggestions. Re: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Hi Anne The backup locations are stored in the file Backup.usr in the folder [YourUserDocuments]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr. It is a text file so you can open it with Notepad. I suggest that you examine the file before backing up, when the default C:\ is being offered, and then again after backing up to your external location and see if the locations have been changed. RE: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Maybe legacy 8 checks to see whether the backup path is valid when Legacy is opened. If not, then revert to C:\ A possibility that maybe the programmers can shed some light on. I would have thought the path check would have been done when the backup was invoked. Re: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
I just ran a test with an external flash drive. I set my backup to the flash drive. made a backup. Closed Legacy and restarted with the flash drive still connected. My backup folder remained the external drive. I then closed Legacy, ejected the external drive and restarted Legacy. Now the backup reverted to C:\path. In a third test I plugged in the external drive, set Legacy to use that drive again then closed Legacy. I ejected the drive, started Legacy then plugged in the external drive before telling Legacy to make a backup. The backup location had reset to C: and was not set to the external drive when that became available. If you want Legacy to remember your backups to an external drive that drive has to be connected every time you start Legacy. Brian, That must be wrong behaviour as you would only insert the backup drive when you wanted to use it. You may want to use the USB connections for other devices when legacy is connected. Re: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
My backup drive is always connected. I have automatic backups of my computer and I don't want to forget about plugging it in. It doesn't cause any problems to always be there. We did have problems when Legacy was remembering an external drive that wasn't connected. I'm glad it's change!
