Re: Emulators and OS frustrations

Grab the Starter disk image for Basilisk II here.
http://www.emaculation.com/articles/intro.html

When downloading Mac files with a .bin or .hqx
extention on a PC, use Internet Explorer and
right click then click Save target as...
Its possible with Netscape but by default it
attempts to display as text any filetypes it
doesn't recognize. Even if you do the rightclick
to save with Netscape, it then erases the filename
from the Save dialog box so you have to retype it. :P

After you have all of the .bin files saved to
your PC, use HFV Explorer to copy them all to
an .hfv file.

First off, which ROM file do you have? The GUI
for Build 124 of Basilisk II will tell you which
Mac the ROM file is from.

Second, the 19 or 20 part downloads of System 7.5.3
are not individual floppy images. They're parts
of a single, self mounting image file. The only
way to get them to work is to have them all on one
Mac hard drive or image file.

Plenty of useful links on the Basilisk II homepage.

Here is System 7.5.3.

Ok, never thought of that one.
Thanks Brian.
My suggestion would be do a search of google
for mac hardfiles. There are a few links but most are dead.
Here's one
http://www.graphixmad.plus.com/mac_troubleshooter/downloads.html
Dont be put of by Amiga here as the bloke who makes Basilisk made
ShapeShifter for the amiga. 1/3 down the page you'll find 2 hardfiles.
D/L the shapeshifter one. Now make your own hardfile, configure both
to run in the emulator with the download to boot and your C: mounted.
It works fine here. the hardfile has stuffit 4.01 on it which should get you going,

there is no diskcopy on the hardfile, d/l the .sit if you need it.
The emulator will complain abit if the floppy is not mounted, ignore it. :)
There are a few hardfiles out there, look around.

As for OS8.1, stick with 7.6.1 until you've got a good idea.
The way you install this makes a big difference. I start with the 8.0 install.
Do a custom install, install system for any computer, leave the rest blank.
Make sure it works by rebooting. Now install only what you need in
network, so no Arose and weird stuff like that. also only extension and
control panels that your sure of e.g. no printers, maybe one you have:)
I do this in parts because its easy to work out what's giving you trouble
if you have to do it again I also have my boot partition on a small (100MG)
partition and back up each working step before the next on a second, larger
partition.
This is alot of work with the flaky Mac installer but it is the only way I have
found to make OS8.+ stable in the long term. It also stops the really flaky
OS8.1 update from making a mess of what you have done.

I have done this many ways, this way is sadly best for me. Doing it all in one
step has always corrupted the hardfile and rendered it useless after a few
boots if it boots at all. As this is the last 68k mac os doing it right and saving
it
means never doing it again. :-)
Better ways welcome, pleease.

Good luck Matt.

Re: Emulators and OS frustrations

2001-08-06 Thread Brian Futrell

I actually did this on the PC. First, download all of the disk image parts
to the PC. Then, using HFVExplorer, copy them to your Mac HD disk image
file. Then you can get to them in Basilisk II. Then once you get it to
boot, double-click on the first part of the disk image to have it load the
7.5.3 disk image.

I've tried 8.1 on a P3-800EB with 256MB RAM and 20GB disk space using a Q650
ROM and a 500MB image file. It boots, but crashes.

Re: Emulators and OS frustrations

2001-08-06 Thread Netman2000

Matthew,

the system 7.5.3 files you have are parts of a Disk Copy image. In order to
use them with the emulator you'll probably have to use a copy Disk Copy to
convert all of the pieces into one big image, and put that image back on the
PC.

Hope this works!
