Transmit is very good, it costs quite a bit but not found anything else
anything like as accessible and easy to use.

You can also use FTP command-line in terminal. I haven’t done it in awhile, so
I’d have to brush up, but it’s easy to google it.

Re: Ftp client for the mac.

2014-01-18 Thread Chris Blouch
Don't forget about the tab key to autocomplete a filename. For example,
if I need to cd into a directory called My Special Stuff, from the
terminal I can type cd and then type My and then hit tab to have it
match the rest, turning it into My\ Special\ Stuff/ and then I hit
enter. If there is is more than one match it will ding and you can hit
tab again to get a list. For example, when I fire up terminal I usually
get dropped into ~/cblouch and I want to CD into Documents. To do that I
type cd D tab and it dings to mean there are either no matches or
multiple ones. So I hit tab again and it responds with Desktop/
Documents/ Downloads/ which all start with D. So I type oc to the
existing D to make it Doc and then hit tab again to complete it to be
Documents/ and hit enter. The tab completion feature of the default bash
shell is really handy.

Hello,

Transmit is what I use most of the time, but it does have a few VO quirks in
the native UI. I like it because you can mount the ftp volume on the desktop
and interact with it like you do any mounted volume.

That said, also check out cyberduck, a java based cross platform client that is
free with some VO issues, but it can be useable and you can’t beat the price.
Here is a link to macupdate’s page on it:

Re: Ftp client for the mac.

2014-01-23 Thread Chris Blouch
Interesting. I have one machine running Mavericks which still has bash
3.2.51 so Apple has stuck with the old rev for now. The chsh command
lets you configure the shell for a particular user. Mine is set to
/bin/bash. So if yours is pointing elsewhere (maybe /usr/local/bin/bash)
you might be able to change back by just updating the shell path. Note
that chsh command will want your admin password and then drops you into
vi to edit the config file for your account. You can also set it in
preferences in the terminal app itself. I think the terminal preferences
trump your general login setup.

The only awful thing about Filezilla on Windows is the inaccessible

elsewhere, then finder can do the job as well, and then you won’t need a
dedicated ftp client. Just hit command plus k when you are in finder. This
opens a dialog where you enter a url. This url can also start off with ftp
colon slash slash, rather than with http colon slash slash. So, say you want to
connect to a server called ftp.somewhere.com .
Here’s how to do it. If the port for ftp is the standard one, i.e. if it is
simply 21, then you hit command k, you then type ftp://ftp.somewhere.com
into the text field, and you then hit connect. Your
username and password will be asked for. Enter them and you will be in. To get
a list view, hit command plus the number 2.

This remote ftp server then looks just like a normal finder window. You can
copy files by hitting command plus c on them, you can traverse folders etc, and
then if you go to your desktop, downloads folder etc, then you can hit command
v to paste and download the files you selected, from the ftp server.

If the ftp server you are connecting to uses a non-standard port that it’s
listening on for your incoming ftp connection, then you simply append a colon,
and the port number to the name of the server.
So: command plus k, and then:
ftp://ftp.somewhere.com:4094
where 4094 is the non-standard port number the server requirees, if applicable.

Hth,
Paul.

Using Finder for ftp is a really bad idea. Unless you're using a super
fast connection with a super fast server, you're going to get a lot of
'Finder Busy' messages with VoiceOver and it'll drive you crazy.

The only issue with this is, to the best of my knowledge, unless things have
changed, at which point, do let me know, I don't think you can upload to an ftp
server with this method. I think it only will let you download.

Plus, I don't think you can upload.

I'm with Shaf here. We didn't say it can't be done, theoretically, but yeah...

The other thing too is, you're transferring then over just plain ftp, not
secured ftp, often known as SFTP. So, yeah, again, it can! be done, yes, I'll
give you that, but it's probably not the most ideal.

I'd do it in a pinch, if I had to, admittedly, but I'd try making that be a
last resort.

2015-07-09 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
That sounds about right. It's very much worth it though! Maybe slightly
pricy, but yeah.

Someone mentioned earlier about Cute FTP for the mac. I tried it and though it
was accessible for the most part, I dono... It just seemed ever so slightly
clunky.

Hi Caitlyn, The best FTP program I've used is transmit. I don't
believe its available on the app store. Just do a google search for
it. Its very VO accessible, and you can upload and download. One thing
I like about it, during a download it not only gives you a percentage
but also time remaining.

I am also looking for this setup? Is it better to do it on a USB drive, so the
files aren’t coming from your mac And how much is transmit, is it a 1 time
charge, or a annual fee? Lastly, I want to set this up so I can share a large
amount of files, does this slow your OS down at all when people are accessing
it? Thanks.

You won't regret with Transmit, I promise you. It takes a little getting used
to, but once you get the hang of it, it works like a dream.

  Paul,
thanks, I didn’t know finder was capable of this! This is great to know!

Unfortunately, I will need to upload stuff as well as download it, so I think
I might be off to get Transmit.

Hi Caitlyn,

Just to add to this: if you need the ftp protocol onlyt to download stuff
from elsewhere, then finder can do the job as well, and then you won’t need a
dedicated ftp client. Just hit command plus k when you are in finder. This
opens a dialog where you enter a url. This url can also start off with ftp
colon slash slash, rather than with http colon slash slash. So, say you want to
connect to a server called ftp.somewhere.com. Here’s how to do it. If the port
for ftp is the standard one, i.e. if it is simply 21, then you hit command k,
you then type ftp://ftp.somewhere.com into the text field, and you then hit
connect. Your username and password will be asked for. Enter them and you will
be in. To get a list view, hit command plus the number 2.

So: command plus k, and then:
ftp://ftp.somewhere.com:4094
where 4094 is the non-standard port number the server requirees, if
applicable.

Paul.

Remember with the Mac you have the full compliment of unix tools. You can go
to terminal and use the good old ftp client ftp. Also SCP and the complete
suite of ssh tools are also available for remote login and moving files.

Hope that helps.

lftp will definitely work. You should be able to install it by first
installing HomeBrew, then installing the lftp package. Finally, run it from a
terminal. The cls command is the most convenient way to obtain a list of files
in a directory.

Hi Scott.
Well, i’ d rather not.
As much as I used to work with Unix in the past, I was really hoping for an
accessible graphical user interface for this task.
I really don’ t want to have to type long file names.
Thanks any way.

Does voiceover work the same in terminal mode as it does with the rest of

meaning your functionality, voice choices, remain when you are in

Hi Kare, yes pretty much it does. You drop in to a window with a prompt
reminiscent of the old windows days for folks non familiar but with a unix type
prompt instead and a bash shell. The voice stays the same and the features
pretty much stay the same. I like it, others run a virtual environment like
ubuntu and use that instead but for me this works out pretty well.

Hope that helps.

With lftp, you get tab completion, so you don't have to type long file names.

2016-11-17 Thread Karen Lewellen

very much Scott, thanks for providing that information.
Shellworld is a Linux /UNIX shell service. Currently I can log in here
not from windows, and have access to all the things I store and use as
part of the service.
I had wondered, if I ever manage a workable mac environment , How I would
still reach my workspace.

Nice to know it would be an effortless situation.
Cheers,
Kare

Hi Kare, yes pretty much it does. You drop in to a window with a prompt

ubuntu and use that instead but for me this works out pretty well.

Hope that helps.

Re: Accessible ftp client for the mac.

2016-11-17 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

um,

I thought cls was the command in dos that cleared the screen, which in unix
is simply just, "clear". I think the command you're thinking of is just
"ls". And, if you don't want anything but just a straight list of
files/folders then you can do, "ls -1".

It's kind a like the "dir" command was in the old dos days.

Still though, being he talks about Filezilla, I'm presuming that he wants a
gui based app, not a CLI.

lftp will definitely work. You should be able to install it by first
installing HomeBrew, then installing the lftp package. Finally, run it
from a
terminal. The cls command is the most convenient way to obtain a list of
files

in a directory.

Remember. There is always tab completion, so you don't have to type a whole
long file name, or whatever. Just type the first bit of it, then hit your
tab key. This said though, I agree with you, and figured that was what you
wanted, hince why I suggested transmit.

As much as I used to work with Unix in the past, I was really hoping for an

I really don’ t want to have to type long file names.
Thanks any way.

meaning your functionality, voice choices, remain when you are in

2016-11-18 Thread Scott Granados
It’s also very scriptable. You can automate the entire process, put it in Cron
and set a lot of things up with 0 user intervention. Of course, the original
poster wanted something graphical so this isn’t it but yes I’m with you love
the flexibility of the CLI.

Nice to know it would be an effortless situation.

As you do in the mac os terminal,

It is unix based so tab complete works fine.

And Chris,

I'll make one other comment,

 Before editing a conf file,
Back up the original such as make a copy of it to another place.

For the most part, yes. Editting conf files can be a little bit dicey in
places, but it's definitely doable as long as you pay close attention to what
you're doing.

Hi!
If you happen to use braille you don’t even need VoiceOver in terminal.
You can use Brltty instead even though i haven’t got it working.
It needed some screen patch which i don’t know what that is really.

Scott,
may I ask a silly question...perhaps?
Does voiceover work the same in terminal mode as it does with the rest
of

the system?
meaning your functionality, voice choices, remain when you are in
terminal?
thanks,
