Any clue what goes wrong there? Do you have enough space on the internal mmc? I didn't and it just kept downloading without making any progress. But I didn't get any errors, so maybe this is a separate issue. It seems to be easy to switch to external card, if you have at least some kilobytes free on the internal card. Start the Map, close it, move the Map directory from the internal card to the external and start the Map again. Then it finds the Map on the external card and uses it happily. -- Tuomas ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users -- -jon http://www.jdodson.org http://youtube.com/jbdodson ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users

Ive heard it said on the listserv and it seems to be true in my case, it really is like a new device. Things I appreciate: * Default Media Player plays mp4 now. * New theme is super-slick * Seems the new browser is Mozilla and the rendering is better. Improved YouTube flash video, which is very nice. * New Menu structure is much easier on my fingers * Minimizing mplayer doesnt make everything double large and impossible to change the screen bright or system volume. * Internet Radio included is super cool With that I had a few questions. * Currently there are a few bars for selecting screen bright and in OS2007 there were many more. Didn't find a place to bring it back. I can handle this change, I just don't see the benefit. * When I use the browser, in general, and this is just a perception that may or may not be accurate, it just seems slower. * When I type a URL in the the browser, occasionally it doesnt register and it just reloads the page I am on. * When I install fceu I get a dbus dependency error and I can't install it. Same with OS2007, if I can't play NES roms ill sepku. Ok, maybe not, but it would be nice. * Why can't the default media player play DiVX? It advertises it can, but doesn't seem to be able to. * Why can't mplayer play mp4? * Why can't it charge via USB? And this is an unrelated soapbox moment, please disregard if it gets in the way of the previous questions: Openess free of patents is an amazing thing. It makes it possible to implement web functionality in your device with a much lower cost. Paying a patent for a video tag seems as silly to me as a patent for a checkbox. OGG might suck compared to mp4(debatable on how teh) but it is patent free and easy enough to support in unixland. I imagine you switched to minimo to cut costs for licensing Opera(and other reasons), OGG would provide the same benefit. Then again you may have already blanket licensed the mp4 patent so it doesn't apply to you anymore because the initial investment has already been made. Regardless, its not just about Nokias interest, there is a world of innovation to continue well beyond the walls of Nokia. Im not trying to create a flamewar, I just wanted to toss in a few cents. PS Ill keep buying the NXXX because it is an amazing device. Thank you for making it. PPS sorry for my harsh title, sometimes you just need to say it. Maybe they listened to the crowd and figured it was best this way? Which I totally agree on. A Linux computer without some sort of terminal access makes me feel crippled. Thanks Nokia :) Dunno, depends on the primary audience of the Nokia n** series really. I just got my n800 and watched the advertisement video to demo video playback. The person in the video didn't seem like a techy, I doubt hed ever use the console feature. Don't get me wrong, I am a long time nix user and software engineer, however I can see why they might not drop a console tool on the n800. Thing about the n800 is that if you didn't recognize the UI elements, it wouldn't seem linuxish because I imagine people may associate linux with hard and the n800 is very well integrated though has some snags here and there(hopefully os2008 addresses some of those). I showed the n800 to a friend and his first reaction was damn that looks expensive. Unsure what that has to add to my point really, however, if the target audience for the n800 is developers, developers, developers(or high tech peeps) then cool, the console makes sense. If its not then I think the demission of it is a totally fine choice coupled with the fact that its pretty easy to add. -- Jesper Cheetah [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users -- -jon http://www.jdodson.org http://youtube.com/jbdodson ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users
n800 user reviews
ive checked the specs and pricing on the n800 and i was wondering if anyone had some honest feedback after using it for a few months++. The review sites rate it based on a few days of use(if that) and thats not a really good review of how good or bad it is. i am a power user who plans on installing apt, bash, ssh(client) and mplayer, etc to get stuff to work like it were a small(form factor) laptop. with that specifically: can i plug in usb stuff to it? i can get usb converters i dont care about that. do bluetooth headsets work with it? as in you got something to work? if so what kind? battery is advertised to be about 3 hours for wifi and 5 for video, does that seem to mesh with your experience? does the battery life degrade over time badly? did you find yourself needing more than the two flash card slots? do you use more than 4 gigs of storage(2 gig sd seems cheap now). how is the UI overall? i can console but i do enjoy ease of use(i find gnome easy to use). appreciate the feedback(if any). -- -jon http://www.jdodson.org http://youtube.com/jbdodson ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users
Re: n800 user reviews
Thanks for the feedback Steve! I don't plan on using as a total laptop replacement, so that was a bit of a misnomer I guess. I plan on really using it to surf the web, watch video and do some more advanced stuff from a slim device. I run linux @ home so having a device like that is what I want to roll with. I traveled this year and a friend had a cellphone that could do internet, that was cool. I realized I wanted to surf the web from a small device but I dont want the phone. Ive had laptops in the past but they are just a bit too big to stuff in a hiking/travel bag :) On Oct 30, 2007 12:42 PM, Steve Yelvington [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jon Dodson wrote: can i plug in usb stuff to it? i can get usb converters i dont care about that. The normal USB setup is for mounting the N800's SD cards as drives on a PC. There's been some discussion on this list of running the N800 in host mode, but that would require some cable magic and I'm unclear about the success rate. If anyone has been able to plug the N800 into a digital camera I'd love to hear about it. Any experience with something like this? http://www.delkin.com/products/connect/usbbridge/ do bluetooth headsets work with it? as in you got something to work? if so what kind? Haven't tried. The N800 has worked with every set of wired headphones I've used, though. battery is advertised to be about 3 hours for wifi and 5 for video, does that seem to mesh with your experience? Maybe just a tad optimistic, but I've had no issues on long airplane flights listening to the Greatful Dead while playing Aisle Riot. does the battery life degrade over time badly? Not so far. The battery is a standard removable/replaceable Nokia BP-5L, which runs $30 to $50 at online retailers. did you find yourself needing more than the two flash card slots? do you use more than 4 gigs of storage(2 gig sd seems cheap now). Not so far. But I haven't stocked it up with video. I am using the internal card primarily for swap and the external SD for media files. how is the UI overall? i can console but i do enjoy ease of use(i find gnome easy to use). Not bad overall. It's more stylus-friendly than finger-friendly overall, especially when using some of the contrib applications (i.e. Claws mail). I think the upcoming revision of the UI (created for the 810) is a significant visual improvement and look forward to the upgrade. In general, I use mine pretty much as a toy, for checking mail and looking up stuff on Google/Wikipedia while wandering around, and for Skype. Being able to call home practically free from Europe while not having to drag out the laptop was very nice. When I can't find an open wifi point, the N800 easily connects through my Nokia cellphone to T-Mobile's EDGE/GPRS network. Setting that up took about 90 seconds and all the T-Mobile magic was preconfigured for me. Most network providers are included. VERY well done! Overall, though, if I had no laptop I'd make that my first priority, especially with Wal-Mart selling a basic Acer for about the same price as I paid for my N800. The very small form factor of the N800 has advantages, but I find it much too small for any extended work. YMMV. -- -jon http://www.jdodson.org http://youtube.com/jbdodson ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users
