Re: SDHC Card Speeds
I bought a class 6 8Gb card (full size SD for my N800) as I wanted to have the highest speed available for dumping large backup files onto the card (data backups from various PCs, not from the N800) and also for dropping large video files on there from time to time. I have an external SDHC card reader which makes use of the higher write speed capability. These cards are now getting cheap enough for this to be a fairly easy decision - e.g. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136210 J ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users

Doh (it would have been a bit far fetched to use this as a technique though ;-) The Gizmo sms service on the Gizmo website - looks interesting. I am a bit worried there might be a charge for the recipients for receiving an sms sent using this method. I will send one to myself as a guinea-pig to check. I am unlikely to change provider simply to use this service. It looks like some other service providers offer this service - e.g. Orange UK, T-Mobile etc. - but as I don't have a telephone number with these providers I cannot register on their websites to use the service! If you know a way around this minor inconvenience please let me know, or better still, why not post some web addresses where free messaging is available - I am sure we are all interested! Skype is an excellent tool on my desktop - shame it doesn't have this feature on the M810/N800 version. Re: Skype video?
I am not too worried about video with Skype (although of course it would be nice!) - what I really miss compared with Desktop Skype is the ability to send SMS text messages. This is a brilliant feature of Skype and saves me a load of cash (I only have a PAYG mobile phone account so SMS messages are comparatively expensive otherwise). Now this is one feature which would be a no brainer to add to the N800 N810 version of Skype - no excuses about processing power etc. Cheers J ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users
USB Ethernet
My last pocket Linux device was the fabulous Archos PMA400. This had both client and host USB ports as standard, and the host port could be used to connect to a network via a simple USB Ethernet adapter. This worked well when a wifi network was not available, but a wired router was. The USB Ethernet connection was able to use a wide range of USB Ethernet adapters (e.g. those based on the widely used ASIX ax8817x chipset). I am happily switching the N800 USB port into host mode and back again to client mode, however in host mode it seems to expect to find a file system (using the echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode command). Is there an alternative command or script which might poke the N800 into looking for a network connection? As you can probably tell, I am very much a Linux noob, so although I have grasped some Linux concepts fairly well, others are still waiting for that learning curve to catch up. On/Off switch problem
I have an odd problem - my N800 is almost impossible to switch on! I have to hold down the on/off switch for a long time (1 minute or so) for the device to boot. Removing the battery briefly seems to cure it - it turns on immediately after replacing the battery. Is the switch polled at a regular interval? How does this work and might re-flashing sort it out? Contacts data
Hi I have been trying to import all my contacts into the standard contacts application and have nearly sorted it out, although my most recent import has resulted in one field out of step (emails in the telephone field doh!) Can someone point me to the location of the data file for this application so I can (hopefully) delete all entries in one go rather than one by one in Contacts (rather tedious). Also - are there any extended specifications for this application? For example - how do imported field mapping work (it can handle multiple email addresses and telephone numbers, but no logic saying which is the home or work telephone number or email etc.) Is there a *best* import solution? From vCard, Google contacts, Outlook or maybe I can create a suitable data file directly (I am dumping my MySQL database into a csv file at the moment so it is easy to generate customised text files). Re: SanDisk microSD 8 GB SDHC class 4
The only other issue is *speed*, capacity and price. The 2Gb SanDisk microSD card I have in my MP3 player is way slower than the 8Gb class 6 SDHC card I bought recently from eBuyer here in the UK (UK pounds 29 plus 17.5% tax). Speed will be important if you use the card for virtual memory, map cache db and so on, but not if you are just keeping mp3 or video files. Re: Quick Launch for simple scripts
Thanks Pit - I am sure you are right, but some of the apps I installed insisted on me making Bora repositories available and would not install without them. Heaven knows which ones - I guess I should start uninstalling them to find out (is that the only way?) I accept I am living on the bleeding edge and in an ideal world I should not have installed anything that was not created specifically for OS2008 with chinook repositories, but I am only got my N800 at the end of December and have been super-enthusiastic to see what it can do! So far I am deeply impressed by it and by the work of the OS and application developers. Cheers J On 04/01/2008, Piotr Zagorowski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Hi Julian, > > I had the same problem. I tried to install osso-statusbar-cpu (from the list of installable apps in my Application Manager) but it tells me I have an incompatible package - hildon-libs0 I found the following command to tell me about the dependencies: apt-cache show, so I ran this and it gave me the following: Nokia-N800-44-4:~# apt-cache show hildon-libs0 Package: hildon-libs0 Priority: optional Section: libs Installed-Size: 380 Maintainer: Michael Dominic Kostrzewa <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Architecture: armel Source: hildon-libs Version: 0.14.11-1 Replaces: hildon-lgpl0 (<< 0.12) Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.9.0), libaudiofile0 (>= 0.2.3-4), libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libdbus-1-2 (>= 0.61), libdbus-glib-1-2 (>= 0.61), libgconf2-6 (>= 2.6.4.15), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.8.6-1osso1), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2:2.6.10-1.osso8), libmatchbox1 (>= 1.7-1), libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.8.1), libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.8rel), libx11-6, libxext6, osso-esd, osso-sounds-ui, hildon-libs-l10n-mr0 | hildon-libs-l10n-mr Conflicts: hildon-lgpl0 (<< 0.12) Filename: pool/maemo3.2/free/binary/hildon-libs0_0.14.11-1_armel.deb Size: 171622 MD5sum: 348c9e6a2b7af6fe49fea3e0398cd715 Description: Hildon libraries It looks like this Hildon library is pretty much required for a whole load of things - but is this dependency list a global dependency list or specifically for my software setup? Quick Launch for simple scripts
I am looking for a way to quickly and easily run some simple scripts - the most immediate example is the one line scripts for switching USB host mode on and off: echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode and echo otg > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode I really don't want to have to fire up the terminal and type these out (and yes I know tab auto complete can speed this up, but this is still not as easy as a menu item!) I am very much a noob so the following idea may be naive and may be shot down immediately: I am assuming I could create a menu item that would run a shell script? Not sure whether these desktop files need to point at executables or whether executable scripts are also OK? [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Encoding=UTF-8 ?? needed? Name=MyShinyScript Exec=/usr/bin/myscript.sh (or .py or whatever) Icon=MyNiceIcon (I can create the correct transparent png) Type=Application ?? needed? StartupWMClass= ?? needed? X-Osso-Type=application/x-executable ?? needed? X-Osso-Service=com.nokia. ?? needed? I am guessing MyShinyScript would look something like: #!/bin/sh echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode I know I must make the scripts executable with chmod +x Of course all this is probably going to be superceded by some kind person who has set up Scratchbox and got their teeth into real programming - a proper Maemo application which installs a simple host mode on-off utility would seem to be a logical development, but in the meanwhile, a scripted hack would be good for me! Please could somebody tell me if my mad idea will work or whether I should go home and start proper application development?
