Spy camera

2011-06-06 Thread Kahlil Johnson
Hi I want to know if there are apps that allow me to have a spy
camera. That means no sound from the camera, no red light of recording
(for video) and no flash.

Ideally no display either, or with a very low luminicity.

Re: N900 and Google sync

2010-04-11 Thread Kahlil Johnson
I wonder if we can use the python GData API and just create widgets
that connect to N900 standard apps. The problem is that these apps are
not FLOSS so as opposed to the GPE calendar... this doesn't work as
well.

However GPE does with with Google Calendar ical dynamic link, and you
can just add it. But GPE calendar is pretty big and is not as good
integrated with maemo as it could.

Howeverhttp://code.google.com/p/gdata-python-client/ could in theory
work with GCalendar supported API and just develop a widget with
hildon.

Maybe a request on developer list can shed some light.

The downside is that QWave Client works with federated wave servers, but not
with the Google Preview Wave server.

For a little more on this, check out my blog post from last December
 Programming the Nokia #N900

where I talk a little bit more about compiling QWaveClient for the N900

Other than that, I don't know of any clients other than the browsers which
seem to work fine.  The same applies to Buzz.

Sounds great, althought for most of the BUZZ even if they don't
support XMPP being able to buzz should be rather simple. Acording to
the buzz api this consist on google standard technology
http://code.google.com/apis/buzz/documentation/#connect

According to the documentation:
Over the next several months Google Buzz will introduce an API for
developers, including full/read write support for posts with the Atom
Publishing Protocol, rich activity notification with Activity Streams,
delegated authorization with OAuth, federated comments and activities
with Salmon, distributed profile and contact information with
WebFinger, and much, much more.

For Buzz, there have been requests that Buzz support XMPP.  (As an aside,
Wave's internals are based on XMPP).  Currently Buzz does not support XMPP.
However, Facebook Chat now does, and I've had some great chats with people
on Facebook using the Nokia N900 Conversations client.

Developing for WebOS on the WEB -- can Nokia step up

Watching Coding with Bryan on the Jupiterbroadcasting.com network I
learn about the Ares project from the guys at Palm and about their
WebOS system, he showed a developer platform on the web.
http://ares.palm.com/Ares/about.html

Everyone in the chat was delighted and wonder if Maemo could do
something like for their widgets at least. Maybe it could be cool to
have. I know Nokia is well invested in the Qt platform but doing a web
driven development could be something that could result pretty awesome
stuff.

All you need is a browser and you are ready to code.

I guess maybe Kollab will have something similar. Other alternative is
to wait until Maemo 6 or even going all experimental and download KDE
for the N900 and then you could use Kontact.

My 2 cents.

There is an early but (for me and othe users) well working versions of

Limit the email client to a x period

2010-01-12 Thread Kahlil Johnson
Hi I submitted this bug which I wonder if there is any interested

of email retrieved from the maemo client.

Most people dont need all our Inbox and specially on a mobile client,
not even the header. So my request is for a tool that allow me to have
a 1 month/week inbox that I can retrieve from IMAP or POP.

I am not sure if this is possible at all because I am not a guru of
the email system or how it works but the goal is to just be able to
check the latest email without waiting too much for the client to
recieve all the updates or store any of them.

At least for IMAP, the next Maemo5 update (not yesterday's 1.2009.44-1)
will by default download/show 250 messages and have a button in the

as a mass storage device then?

yes it does.

In flasher mode, I don't know what happens under the hood, but it might
be normal not to have the filesystem enabled for mounting, if it's going
to be over-written by an image write ;)

exactly, no longer finds it, but neither in the USB

 Cheers,
 Dave.

Facebook app is just a commercial after update

2010-01-11 Thread Kahlil Johnson
Hi today I got this update on my maemo that included Maemo 5 and some
facebook stuff. However one of the installed was actually just an
icons that send me to the app manager. This is kind of silly since I
already have the facebook widget installed. I install it because I
thought it was an actual app, it shows as an app menu but in the end
is just a way to try to get it from the app manager.

Please let me know if anyone had that similar issue.
I guess I can just select and uinstall it exacept I am not sure I can
take it off since is not really an app.

This might be naive, but since the N900 runs a fully capable mozilla browser
(i.e. fennec) why does it need a suite of Google applications?

Now, if it had the enhanced Google Maps app with voice navigation, that
 would be something.

onestly... we talk a lot about usability and do you want to compare
accessing Gmail from MicroB or accessing it from a native client?
Have you tried using Google Maps from N900 browser?! It's more usable
from Google Maps for Nokia N73 than from N900 browser

No micro-browser is enough for Google applications, neither N900 one
nor iPhone nor Android one there's need for a native application
 to access certain services.

The native client for Google services is.. well.. the browser ?
 :)

But I get what you mean, Google services like Gmail, Maps, iGoogle etc
are a bit heavy on the N900
(but it handles them quite well indeed).
And the main issue is that it is simply too small.

But we are talking here about Google services using the desktop
 version of their web pages.
Google services are accessible also via their own mobile versions
 (mostly developed for iPhone).

Same goes for Facebook that has a touch version.

So, I think using the native client the Google services were designed
for, it's the best way to go.

This doesn't apply to Google services like Latitude, where a nice
small daemon that updates it would be nice on the N900.
It would suck less battery and I won't have to run a full fledged
browser with the geolocation plugin just to have it updated.

Well I was mostly thinking about Google Goggles or the Barcode
Scanner, basically get to use N900 builtin technology like camera to
do exactly that.

Re: Google services

2010-01-08 Thread Kahlil Johnson
Most Google utilities are open, whenever is the client itself or the API, so Google calendar can be access already from many Python scripts for example, same with Gmail and others. N900 supports python very well. I guess the higher end applications like Google Earth would need some aragement with them. Google is mostly a Java House and most of those apps are developed in Java.

On the other side I wonder how well will N900 support webkit widgets on their interface. I guess thats what the Developer guide is for. But I guess I will stop here.

My main concern is not accessing google, or creating clients for their services. My main concern is using/extending Nokia official software to support it.

When I was on the N800 i had integration with Google calendar not because of google or nokia but because a third developer ported the gpe-calendar application to Maemo N800. My desire is for nokia to integrate their calendaring app with Google (or at least accept ical feeds).

Just FYI that I just updated Maemo Flasher-3.5 Tool documentation to
be
up-to-date with our final Flasher-3.5 release.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Development
_Environment/Maemo_Flasher-3.5

Comments (and possible fixes to the wiki :) are welcome...

Thanks Jarmo!
There's something that puzzles me. In the documentation is written
that you have to hold the 'u' key (N900) while the device is off and
you are plugging in the USB cable and keep it pressed until you see
the USB logo in the upper right corner of the display.

Is pressing the 'u' key really needed? I never did it (I simply
plugged it in) and it worked.

[jot] If you press 'u' key during bootup N900 set's itself to flashing mode.

I try doing that but unfortunately didn't work for me it seems that when the
N900 is on flashing mode the udev on my Linux box doesnt detectec it as a USB
mass storage, and dont detect it at all. So the flasher timeout without
locating the correct usb address.

Using Mandriva 2010 on an Acer Laptop 32bits

[jot] Also when you start flashing flasher tries to set N900 device into
flashing mode. At least for Linuxes also this works but there were some
problems especially with Windows PCs that when you started flashing with
Windows PC N900 did not manage to set itself to flashing mode automatically
especially with eMMC (memory card) images.

[jot] So it is safer to set N900 device manually to the flashing mode at bootup
and this is why we have documented the process like this. If flashing works for
you without manually enabling flashing mode that is fine.

Cheers,
//Jarmo

Could you shed some light?
Thank you

/usr/lib/python2.5/xmlrpclib.py exists on my N900, and any existing

You can use OpenOffice.org to cnvert the doc into pdf and then send

There are good and band things wiht the N810/N800 specially because
the display is a regular LCD, nothing compared to the monocrome ebook

master reset it, or at least update to the latest build for 770.

I kind of lost focus on the development of Sardine or Herring but
Iwould like to know where I can get this updates. Thanks.

i am a comunity guy so even though i agree with the discussion about
nokia not exploiting all the features. about the marketing, i think
the community could well do real reviews of the n800.

we could blog more about the under published features of n800, a
youtube review is as effective as a commercial review nowadays

so there is nothing much to wait about.

Well just to remind you that the N770 used to run Abiword and
Gnumerics. So you could have Office apps in maemo. The biggest reason
why OOo cant be is basically they relly on X as opposed to
framebuffer.

Not if the tablet is all you have with you, or a desktop machine

   Nope. Not even close.

Guess I need a better word then. Still. VNC server is basically install,
choose a port, and forward that port on the router. That is pretty much a
point-and-click procedure. It may take a bit of playing around, but will be
nowhere near as difficult as fiddling with beta versions of OO tablet edition.

Wrong again. I have yet to have a recent version of OOo choke on any
Word, Excel, or Powerpoint file I've thrown at it, or even screw up

I am sure that OO (if it were implemented) on a tablet would choke on
complex docs. And the main point is that it is not currently on the tablet,
so this is an in-the-meantime solution that is not difficult and may actually
 be useful.

But, I came up with a second solution. I think you'll like this one: From
the original post, I did not realize you had access to the files ahead of
time. If you have that, you can use OO.org to convert to pdf and then use
evicne on the tablet to view them. voila!

still, not ideal, but I suspect OO tablet edition is quite a ways off.

  good luck!

  remotely care about OGG?

How weird. I have no AAC files but a big bunch of ogg files, why should
I even remotely care about AAC?

IOW: What is the point you are trying to make?

Pretty simple: why should I be upset (or sympathetic to the upset that
Kahlil was expressing by trashing another format) about the lack of OGG
support, or the presence of AAC support.

Or is this one of those you absolutely need it for interesting content
in Europe, but it's absolutely useless for content in the Americas type
  situations?

Huh? What does it have to do with America/Europe? It's about *open* and
*free* music codecs - neither AAC nor MP3 are free.

It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with America/Europe. The
question was asking _does_ it have something to do with America/Europe
... as in, I'm trying to figure out why OGG support would be so
important as to induce the comments Kahlil made.

And, no, it's not about open and free. Since the developers in
question are Nokia (since the comment was directed at the release of the
N810 itself, and not a request for more 3rd party development), it's
about how much effort the developers need to put into supporting
something vs. the amount of return they get from supporting it. Given
all of the other things that are on Nokia's plate for the internet
tablet development, why should OGG be a priority? What thing only comes
in OGG format, that they need to support now, instead of later? Or that
they need to support directly, instead of leaving to the efforts of 3rd
 party support?

Well for one OGG is the default audio format for Linux. FLAC and OGG
are almost supported by default under the Gstreamer framework which is
what Maemo used for it's audio (AFAIK).

The development of yet another audio player exclusively for OGG seems
a waste of development. Adding ogg to gstreamer and enabling the media
player to recognize the format looks like an easier development and
less confusing for it's users. If I get a 3rd party app for OGG I will
need to split my playlists that includes Mp3 / OGG. From a User
Experience it just deteriorate not having OGG support. As for what is
being distributed on OGG-only format. Most of the podcast that I
listen to I get the OGG feed for them. Podcast are one of the
internet's best growing initatives in audio consumption and having a
Linux handheld that can be used as a media player and not support a
primarily Linux standard seems like a bad design decision.

What things come in AAC only form now?

I'm as interested in open and free as the next person, but there's
nothing about the comment I was replying to that captures that.

And I don't really see the problem with supporting *also* ogg.

I don't either. But that's clearly not what the initial request was
about, or it wouldn't have also attacked another format. By asserting a
value judgment about AAC vs OGG, that then leaves the question of what
value is actually being implied in that assertion.

AAC was an example, could have pic another proprietary format other
than MP3. Sure Mp3 is the commercial standard for audio but it doesn't
just support mp3 but other formats, formats that are even less used.

If the person just wanted another format to be supported, then they
could have just said that. But they didn't. If they just wanted an
open/free format to be supported, then they could have just said that.
 But they didn't.

Well OGG support has been requested many times in this list. Having to
ask for support of OGG wouldn't be my main complain but that they not
just have ignored the support for OGG but also expanding to other
formats that doesn't necessarily add value to me.

In other words, why you give me bacon when I been asking you for more
lettuce for almost 2 years now?

Now just to finish my soapbox, I wonder how really open is this apps.
We all know the framework is open but can you just submit a patch to
the default media player that maemo comes with and expect to have the
change implement on the next version?

Re: H.264 playback

2007-09-09 Thread Kahlil Johnson
I would watch it using mplayer for N800, and that has worked for me.
So far I preffer Xvid which is also mp4. I use the n770-encode.pl
which uses mencoder to transcode most video formats into a Xvid (AVI)
file.

On 9/6/07, DrFredC.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  Ingo Kofler wrote:
  Dear all,

I am interested in buying either a Nokia 770 or 800 and one of my
criteria would be that it is capable of decoding H.264. On the official
Nokia homepage I've found that H.263 and MPEG-4 is supported. I know
that the mplayer or VLC supports this codec but I am wondering if the
processing power of the Nokia 770 or 800 is sufficient for that.

 Any experiences on that?

  I've loaded a 115Meg MP4 video I did on to my N800 of my son's soccer team
trip to Paris and Spain this summer. With N800s Media Player, there's a
message that it doesn't have the codex to play mp4s. MPlayer (maemo)
supposedly plays mp4s, but chokes on this particular MP4 file, chopping up
the audio and only rarely showing a change in video displays. This MP4 file
plays fine with QuickTime on my XP laptop. Perhaps I don't have the
optimum mp4 player or codex installed. Perhaps, because the MP4 comes from
a widescreen DVD format compressed to a smaller internet uploadbable MP4
file ([EMAIL PROTECTED] fps), it doesn't play well Nokia's MP4 MPlayer either
because it's a 'non-standard' frame size, too many fps or whatever. MPlayer
seems to try to process the file to display in full screen rather than it's
native 512x288 format. If so, that probably requires way more processing
power than the N800 has. I haven't had time to sort out what's going on.

What about the battery lifetime when watching videos (e.g., stored on
 the memory card?)

I haven't been able to play any prolonged video to determine battery life.

Re: youtube doesn't work anymore

2007-08-03 Thread Kahlil Johnson
I didn't use Youtube much before, but on IT OS 2007 v4.2007.26-8 and the
default Opera browser, I've noticed videos often fail to load fully so I can
only see half the video or so. This is a problem I also experience on my
linux desktop using Flash9. Is this what you're speaking of when you say
 youtube doesn't work?

I get a message saying that I need the latest flash version. Yet this
was working just 2 weeks ago. So I had to blame youtube since I can
load other flash animation like metacafe and google video with no
problem.

Re: youtube doesn't work anymore

2007-08-03 Thread Kahlil Johnson
or maybe u just found a bug in opera. I know opera and it uses a
library to be able to handle objects (at least on the desktop)
something like libmotiff, if motiff isn't present then flash wont even
show on the page. (but u woun't see a message asking u to upgrade
flash). Just will be a blank (or gray) square. Which is NOT what is
going on in here.

I had similar fun (pre Mozilla) where for some unknown reason youtube couldn't
detect javascript (also part of the error you get about flash version). Then
some dummy didn't pay attention to battery and had to reboot his Nokia...
Then it started working again. Later it happened again and when I went into
xterm to look at the process list I had some hung processes related to the
browser. Killed them and I was again back in business. Seemed to me to be
related to loosing connectivity during a video.

Then again what do I know I just got told by a programmer that a process that
combines 3 streams into a single file in time stamp order isn't an
 aggregation.

you will need to add a few more repositories for starter (please find

(separate package I cannot remember name) or alternatively you can
install ssh server and run ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] (def password: rootme).
Obviously if you decided to install ssh server you need to change root
and user password for security reason. Also you may install and
 configure iptables.

 Reinstall.

I've created a web page with direct links to .install files for the

After a reflash I open that page in Opera and keep tapping.

That's just a convenience for myself to have all the install links on
one page, you could just as well open the Maemo application catalog and
find all the apps you want there.

Alternatively you can click on the .install links for the application
repositories, and then go through the list of apps in the application

(By the way, I see reflashing a perfect opportunity to get rid of all
the applications I had installed but never used. Sure beats looking at
 it as an inconvenience.)

video that comes with the n770 is the one that puts a lot of buts.
Fortunately this is free software and there is already Mplayer for the N770.
Mplayer will play much more formats with less hassle since it has resizing
capabilities.

However making N770 videos is not that hard. N770 plays Xvid videos pretty
much, so you will have to export as xvid. But also if you have mythtv box
you will be able to encode 'on the fly' to the n770.

There are also other scripts that will help you resize and re-format your
video such as mencoder and ffmpeg. The tutorials are on the maemo website.
3rd party scripts include a perl script to easy encode N770. I use
770-encoder.pl.
www.bleb.org/software

About Gizmo, you can connect to a Asterisk server you dont need a gizmo
account and you dont need to put money to get a gizmo account.

And the reason why it gets great reviews is that it can do so many things.
You just need to learn how to do them. Fortunately we are here to share tips
and tricks.

Hi,
I'm getting frustrated with my Nokia N800 and I hope someone can help
me. I bought this for a couple reasons, the 2 big ones are for SIP
video calling and for playing videos off my MythTV. I have been totally
unsuccessful so far.

The media player finds my MythTV server, but it refuses to play any
videos. It turns out that the videos are stored in standard definition
format, which the Nokia can't play. Why do they advertise it's video
capabilities if it can't play standard videos? I'm using a WinTV
PVR-500 to record MPEG-4 videos. They play great on my Linux desktop
and my Windows laptop, but they refuse to play on my N800, even though
Nokia advertises that it plays MPEG-4. Can anyone help?
I've tried transcoding files to flash, but they look awful and are very
choppy. Not watchable. I also tried transcoding down to a lower
resolution with similar problems. At least they play, but what good is
a 800x600 screen if the videos have to be 288x160? And, even then, the
fast forward doesn't work and it regularly hangs and the video and audio
doesn't sync.

One big features that Nokia advertises is the ability to do video
conferencing. Can someone tell me how to set it up so I can conference
from my Nokia to my Linux desktop machine? Apparently, you have to use
the Nokia Internet Calling Invitation software, which isn't ported to
Linux. I tried the Windows version on my laptop but it refused to run
until I bought a webcam. There's no support for one-way video with
two-way audio? And, no support for Linux? *sheesh*

Beyond that, I can't seem to get a normal SIP voice client at all.
Tapioca doesn't support SIP. Minisip supposedly works, but the
repository is down. Gizmo supports SIP, but only if you have a Gizmo
account. I'm using Allo.com. Can someone please, please tell me where
to get a SIP client?

Is anyone out there having any success with their N800? So far, I've
paid $400 for a brick I can play pipe panic on. Why does this get
such great reviews?

Re: video conferencing - ekiga

Good point. Looks like the nokia software for the PC (Windows only)
http://videovoip.tableteer.nokia.com/ uses xmpp/jabber as well. It comes with
libjingle.

Is there a known way to stream video from the N800 camera to a Linux PC?
Without voice, I know IPs of both ends, etc.

Thanks,

But I installed both and setup an account with ekiga and I was unsuccessful

It could be that you have removed the USB cable without 'ejecting' it

seconds after opening the memory card cover, in case the warning dialog

I've been testing video playback on the N800. It's much improved over
 the 770.

The native media player can play video encoded at very high rates,
unlike the old video player on the 700.

 I've played back 400x240 @ 30 fps mpeg4 encoded at 1000 kbps with
 Handbreak.

mplayer doesn't seem to work for these videos, but did play back QCIF
sized videos I had set up for the 770. mplayer complains it cant find
the 770 hardware and falls back to xvideo.

Re: [maemo-users] Running the Internal Video Player with Arguments?

2007-01-15 Thread Kahlil Johnson

You might have some memory problems actually the nokia's mameo is
catching so much memory that it crash the application. The official
argument will be

mplayer -ss 36:14.0 file.avi

It might work but also it might crash, what I found is that the
nokia's video player is quite good avoiding this.

Hello,

I would like to start the internal Video Player with a time stamp (say:
start playing from 00:36:14). Is it at all possible?

I also have MPlayer installed - how do I execute commands like 'o' (not
zero) to bring up the current time indicator on the OSD like I do on my
desktop?

Thanks!

Re: [maemo-users] installation of maemo-mapper

I have been trying (in my spare time) over a 3 week period to install
maemo-mapper. My problem is that I have been unable to locate libsqlite (=

the version of libsqlite installed was aparently not the correct one.
Searching maemo, I have not located the required version of libsqlite.

Why dont you go to the maemo wiki and look for setting up apt-get with
all the repositories. This will make your life easier as opposed to be
constantly searching for the package. Let apt-get take care of it.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone here can simply email me the
correct version of libsqlite that they installed to work with maemo-mapper
with the latest 06 version of the 770 OS.
