MI RE: Non-Earth to State Plane

1999-07-09 Thread Uhl, Philip/SLC

Robert,

I had the same situation here. This one is a bit tricky and I didn't figure
it out until someone on the list helped me.

Normally you can reproject your data by doing FILE->SAVE AS (there's a
projection button in the dialog box that appears). Unfortunately this won't
work because there is a problem trying to reproject Non-Earth to a real
projection. Here's the what you have to do:

Warning: when I did this with my Non-Earth data everything already had State
Plane coordinates. Whoever brought it into MapInfo originally (probably
from a DXF file) didn't bother to specify it was State Plane so it became
Non-Earth since that is the default apparently. If your Non-Earth data
doesn't have essentially State Plane coordinates associated with it, then I
really don't think this will work.

1. Find some data that is not Non-Earth; even the sample data that comes
with MapInfo will do. Bring it into MapInfo.

2. Do a FILE->SAVE AS and save it in the State Plane Coord. System you want.

3. Bring that new layer in, and then export it as an MIF (TABLE->EXPORT).

4. Export your Non-Earth data to MIF, too.

5. Open the MIF file of the sample data in a text editor (like Word in
Windows) and copy the line that has the coordinate information on it. It
will all be on one line, about 4 lines down. It will say something like:
"CoordSys Earth Projection 3, 62, "survey ft", -111.5, "

6. Open the MIF of you Non-Earth data in a text editor also and replace its
coord info line with the one you copied from the sample data. Then save it.

7. Import your previously Non-Earth data (the now-altered MIF) back into
MapInfo and you should be set.

Hope that works for you.

Re: MI runtime for MapInfo Professional

1999-07-09 Thread Bob Young

Dear Cesar

We use runtime a lot. Ther are virtually no porting implications - just
make sure you show menu bar!

Here in the UK runtime must only be used with one MBX app. ie you cannot
have a computer with one runtime and two MBXs for say highway app and
planning app.

There are two versions - a Runtime (R/O) read only that is good for
viewing thematics etc and a Manipulator that allows creation and editing
of MapInfo tables.

It is designed for developers to integrate MapInfo into a turnkey
solution. It works as you ask with MapBasic but also with VB, Delphi
etc. It is basically full MapInfo but with no menus or toolbars shown (
they are all there though if you create your own menus and call the
built in ones).

Obviously you are not supposed to expose all functionality as this would
"cannibalise" the sale of MapInfo Professional but for most turnkey
users they only need about 10% of functionality.

We use it for Map Production and Highway applications. I Recommend it!

(1) Does MapInfo provide a runtime version of MapInfo Professional that can

(2) If so, how do I get a copy and what are the licensing costs, if any?
(3) Are their any technical issues/problems in "porting" my application from

MI 5.0 - Raster/Vector display

1999-07-09 Thread Peter_McPherson

Greetings,

I have just experienced a problem with MI5.0 with viewing
raster/vector data. In my map window I have a raster and vector
layers. When I expand or contract the window size the vector layers do
not display, they are set as the top layer. If I switch the layers
back and forth in the layer control and then the map view displays
properly with the vectors on top. Has anyone else experienced this
problem? I have carried out this exercise under MI 4.5 without this
occurring. Could this be a MI 5.0 issue? I am running this particular
version on Win98.

TIA

For those who haven't tried it, Access 2000 is not really backwards
compatible. It will open and read tables leaving them in prior formats, but
you cannot change the design of anything without converting to 2000.

I just tried to open an Access 2000 table in MapInfo 5.5 and it cannot read it.

Yes, we are aware of this problem. You can get around this problem by opening

Re: MI State Boundaries

1999-07-09 Thread Bill Thoen

Census Bureau's where you want to go. They have fairly high res
state and county bounds in MIF on their FTP server. See
ftp://ftp.census.gov/pub/tiger/boundary/ (Also go up a path or
two for more interesting stuff).

For street files, you are talking about a data set that's several
CD's wide. You can get TIGER data free at your nearest Federal
Depository library (call ahead first to see what their check out
and/or disk copy policies are). Or you can buy it really cheap
from www.manifold.com (I think they sell the Census CDs for $97
(as opposed to $1500 from the Bureau). Raw TIGER needs to be
translated to MapInfo before you can use it ("free" means the
cost is on the other end).

Also check out the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. See
http://www.bts.gov for info on all sorts of transportation data
free for the asking.

MI: new utilities

1999-07-09 Thread Jacques Paris

We have just added two new mbx that could be of help for people working with
non-earth maps. You will find them in the "Shareware-Unregistered" section
at

http://www.total.net/~rparis/gisproducts.htm

CONVBNDS transfers the objects of a non-earth table to another one with new
bounds and also new coord unit (any of the 13 existing) if needed. Objects
straddling the new bounds or completely out off bounds are stored in a table
with the original bounds/unit definition preventing object distortions.

VU_BNDS generates a table with two "rectangles" showing the common (minimum)
bounds of all the tables in a mapper and the MBR of all the objects in those
tables. Will process only non-earth maps in any of the 13 units used by MI.

The document "Dealing with bounds in non-earth maps" is included in both zip
files.

To use the full 13 units, one should modify the PRJ file to read as the
latest message of tech supp on the subject, i.e. add the last 5 lines.

"--- Non-Earth ---"
"Non-Earth (inches)", 0, 2
"Non-Earth (feet)", 0, 3
"Non-Earth (yards)", 0, 4
"Non-Earth (miles)", 0, 0

"Non-Earth (Nautical Miles)", 0, 9
"Non-Earth (Links)", 0, 30

I hope some of you will enjoy those new tools. I remain very receptive to
any comments, suggestions ...

MI Browsing columns

1999-07-09 Thread Dan Munson

Ladies & gentleman,

A simple little question...

When working with a database of many columns, it
can get annoying to see all of them.  We sometimes work with tables with
100 columns + and it gets, well, annoying.

We want to basically make it so we can set a
default to the columns to browse (similar to the browse>pick columns).
However, the reproject statement doesn't seem to work properly.

We could make a variable of the column names and
dump this into the select statement.  However, if the expression goes
longer that 254 characters (which with 100+ columns it definitely does) then it
blows up.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

MI Announcement: Saturn Technologies

1999-07-09 Thread Gareth Hardman

Saturn Technologies (http://www.saturn-technologies.com) formed
to deliver complete transportation solutions
Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK, July 1st - Landair International Ltd
(Salisbury, UK) (http://www.landair.co.uk) and Aqua-Logic Ltd (Christchurch, UK)
announce the formation of Saturn Technologies, a wholly independent
company, in order to deliver products and solutions to the transportation,
logistics and in-vehicle communications market. The combination of strengths and
complementary products from the two companies will enable Saturn Technologies to
strive towards their goal of providing a total logistics solution.
Landair International and Aqua-Logic have previously shown the benefits of
their combined approach with the development of SENTRY(http://ww.saturn-technologies.com/sentry.htm)
- a command and communication product providing real-time benefits and security
to fleet operations. SENTRY delivers reduced base-to-vehicle communication
costs, peace of mind security and increased customer confidence through instant
mobile asset tracking. The formation of Saturn Technologies ensures the
continued focused development and delivery of the SENTRY product range.
Other complementary products to be provided from Saturn Technologies will
include the Iso-Route (http://www.saturn-technologies.com/isoroute.htm)
product range. Iso-Route is a low cost yet functionality rich routing component
for application developers who wish to provide their users with best
route/quickest route answers along with drive time analysis. Founded on the
premise that routing should be both low cost and data independent, Iso-Route is
already in use by application developers around the world (including the UK,
USA, South Africa, Portugal and Taiwan). Saturn Technologies intend to provide
Iso-Route with even further functionality with an ambitious development
programme. This should ensure that Iso-Route will indeed be the routing
component of choice for discerning application developers.
Saturn Technologies will also become the primary outlet for the Aqua-Logic
ruggedised PC range. Highly robust and designed to withstand the rigours of both
the maritime and military environment, this hardware is in use in boats,
factories and on military operations. SENTRY is delivered in same robust manner
to ensure a long and robust life for equipment designed to provide trouble-free
for a considerable length of time.
Saturn will continue to provide a wide range of map based applications based

MI Access 2000 bug

1999-07-09 Thread John Hollingsworth

We upgraded this morning to Access 2000 and found that MapInfo cannot create
a new table in Access 2000 using the 'create table' command. I'm still
running version 5.0. Does anyone know if v5.5 can create tables in Access
2000?

If not, then this note serves as a warning to fellow mappers and a call to
action on the part of MapInfo to fix this.

For the moment, I'm going to have to rewrite a lot of code to export to DBF
and then import to Access manually. :(

MI Problems using move move duplicate nodes

1999-07-09 Thread Peter Roberts

I have encountered the following problem with this feature.

Imagine two polygons(a and b) with coinsident points (1 2 and 3)

Move point a1 and snap to point a2 (point b1 moves with it) and you now
have four nodes at the same location.

Now move the point again, on this occasion point a1 moves but takes with it
points b1 and b2 leaving you with 3 points at one location and a boundary
that doesn't remain in synch.

Surely on snapping to point a2 MapInfo should recognise the fact that
points a2 and b2 are surplus to requirements and delete both of them from
the object.

Re: MI: non-earth maps and distance units

1999-07-09 Thread TechSupport

You can define your coordinate systems such as this to use all these pre-defined
units.

"--- Non-Earth ---"
"Non-Earth (inches)", 0, 2
"Non-Earth (feet)", 0, 3
"Non-Earth (yards)", 0, 4
"Non-Earth (miles)", 0, 0
"Non-Earth (millimeters)", 0, 5
"Non-Earth (centimeters)", 0, 6
"Non-Earth (meters)", 0, 7
"Non-Earth (kilometers)", 0, 1
"Non-Earth (US Survey Feet)", 0, 8
"Non-Earth (Nautical Miles)", 0, 9
"Non-Earth (Links)", 0, 30
"Non-Earth (Chains)", 0, 31
"Non-Earth (Rods)", 0, 32

Then upon Saving a file into this system after determining an appropriate set of
bounds, and then exporting to MIF, it will look like this example below. If
creating a MIF from scratch, etc., you need to have these defined in the
mapinfow.prj file first, then a MIF such as this will import correctly. This
example MIF header is a simple New York State boundary map in Non-Earth (Rods)
units.

Version 300
Charset "WindowsLatin1"
Delimiter ","
Index 1,2,3,5,20
CoordSys NonEarth Units "rd" Bounds (-1763537.17, 895418.11) (-1590726.56,
995157.86)

Subject: MI: non-earth maps and distance units

Non-earth maps can be defined for one of 8 different units
(in,ft,y,mi,mm,cm,m,km) but there are another 5 types of distance unit
(survey ft, li,rd,ch and nmi). I am able to generate maps in these units,
with a
create map for ... coordsys nonearth units "rd" bounds ...
and they seem to perform well.

However, when I query the projection of such maps I receive a plain lon/lat
(default when MI does not find the exact projection in its .prj file). For a
non-earth, that prj has a line like
 "Non-Earth (millimeters)", 0, 5
The numbers 0 to 7 identify the 8 units mentionned above.

Would it be possible to add new projections for the 5 other units and what
could be their id?

TIA

1999-07-09 Thread Mike C Kallas

"Long time reader, first time writer."

Is it possible to get 6 decimal places in a Lat - Lon Column in MapInfo?
I'll bring a bring the data over from MSAccess and it will truncate it

Let me know if you know!

MI State Boundaries

1999-07-09 Thread Stephen R Ford

Hello,

I am looking for US State Boundaries(other than those supplied with MI) with
high resolution. Also, a street file(for display purposes) of the US. I am
aware of the MapInfo Data products but I am looking for something less
expensive. I am looking for something that is free or really cheap. Any help
is appreciated.

TIA

MI MapBasic crashes when I'm linking

1999-07-09 Thread Bjorn Veltman

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem linking a project. The application consists of some 12
modules, each of them compiles ok. I've defined files for declarations of
functions and subs which are 'included' in all the modules.

The problem is that when I link the project, MapBasic crashes, giving me
the message "This program has performed an illegal??"

Can anyone give me a clue what the reason might be?

Greetings Bjorn

RE: MI Mapbasic Menu bars

1999-07-09 Thread Shekhar Kalyanam

Hi There!
When you remove menu's from the menu bar be sure to remove the menu item 'WinSpecific'
The generic name for the window-specific menu, which changes dynamically depending on
which type of window is the active window. This will remove the 'Map' before the 'File'

MI AD: Volunteers for Olympic Torch Relay mapping

1999-07-09 Thread Antony Burnett

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay will pass within one hour's drive of 85
per cent of the Australian population, travel over 27,000 kilometres and be
carried by 10,000 Torchbearers in what is the longest Torch Relay in
Olympic history.

I am finding how many, if any, volunteers there may be out there with
skills in MapInfo. Whilst we have a pool of talented volunteers here at the
Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, skills in MapInfo are not that easy to come by!

I am looking for volunteers to perhaps assist with some of the mapping of
the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay. You may be using MapInfo at university
as part of your course, and are looking for a chance to apply some of your
knowledge of MapInfo. What universities are using the software in Sydney?

Some of the maps I need help with include Celebration Sites, individual
torchbearer maps, route maps for each day, to name a few.

* Celebration Sites: each day of the Torch Relay includes a lunch and
evening celebration. We require hand drawn maps from each of the 200 venues
to be converted into "real world" MapInfo maps that can be added as a layer
on the route. In many cases we have aerial photos that need to be
registered and traced. The maps show the path of the torchbearer from the
street to the stage, plus the locations of stage trucks, crew break area,
crowd positioning etc .

* Route Maps: we need to make artworked maps for each day of the Relay.
Someone with skills in getting data out of MapInfo into something useful
for presentation purposes (Illustrator 7 on NT) would be welcomed!

You will need to have access to a licensed copy of MapInfo Professional. Or
perhaps you can contribute a few hours at our headquarters in Ultimo,
Sydney Australia.

Interested? Email me at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
