Re: Anyone used MI 6.0 yet?
I've seen it, but not looked at it. As a VAR, I do have some strong opinions... 1.There is a cost to MapInfo just to stay current. Every time Windows comes out with a new version, there's work for MapInfo just to make it work correctly. So they need to come out with maintenance releases. 2.Maybe the features are ground shaking events. However, some of the seemingly minor ones have huge impacts on daily users. For example, in 5.5, the better editing algorithms are very significant, if you do drawing (we do). In 6.0, cutting off the ends of lines to create polygons is an exception feature(we just did a big project, and it would have saved us much more than $600 in time). 3.Extending the product line to have OCX Products (MapX), and web-based versions is HUGE. It actually has caused some pain for people who just use MapInfo Pro(like newer versions seem buggier - older ones were bullet proof when released). But it does open up many more ways to use mapping, and makes it potentially available to many more people. If you are the key user for your company, I bet lots of people ask you to make maps, and you tell them you can't - you don't have the time - you'd be overwhelmed if you made maps for everyone who wanted them What if they could make their own maps? 4.Enterprise-wide solutions - The web-based products and OCX give you the potential to make things simpler. Also, the web server based models make it possible to update the information in 1 place and give access to many. This reduces maintenance costs drastically. Plus, since MapInfo charges per seat for desktop licenses, the Web-based server stuff actually makes it CHEAPER if you have lots of people. Small companies don't, but small companies can have lots of customers! You can open up your maps to customers, sales execs, etc. with web mapping. Think outside the box! Best Wishes! It's not shipping yet. June 1st is the scheduled date for North America. I think the only thing out now is the beta version, which no one is supposed to talk about in public. I think that most people actively using MapInfo now will upgrade. Casual users will probably think harder about it, but I really think most people will get it. A certain percentage will almost certainly try one of the cheap competitors, but will be back here in a year or so saying that their alternative makes a nice supplement to MapInfo. A smaller percentage will leave forever, and probably throw out all commercial software and switch to Linux and GRASS. MI Flood data - BFE's
We're working with many companies that use the Q3 flood data. However, someone has explained that the BFE that you must meet sometimes changes for an area. For example, if the rule in 1980 was a BFE of10' was required, and you built you house, then in 1990, FEMA said the BFE in the area must be 12', you're still in compliance. Does anyone know of a source to tell when BFE's change locally? Apparently, the pricing changes based upon if you're above the threshold or not. The real question is about understanding when the BFE heights change. Some sort of historical record by county or municipality. Does FEMA or anyone else put such a document out? Does anyone know whether USGS DLGs for California (both the 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scales) were originally created in NAD83 or NAD27? The original paper quad sheets I've seen (1:24,000) are in NAD27, with a description in the margins of the offset to the NAD83 grid. 2. Is anyone using the TopoDepot CDs? I've noticed that when I create a map using the NAD27 datum and print it at 1:24,000 along with the 7.5 minute quad boundary file from the USGS (which is in "unprojected" lat long), the map elements line up very well with the paper versions of the quad sheets (using the USGS boundary file to align the two maps on a light table). However, the same TopoDepot map created in NAD83 shows the characteristic NAD27-NAD83 offset (usually a few hundred feet) from the paper version. This leads me to believe that the TopoDepot software simply changes the coordsys settings, but leaves the actual coordinates the same, i.e. doesn't actually reproject the data. Anyone else seeing this? 3. Along these same lines, I've received several GIS data sets (in NAD83) from large public agencies in southern California, and these data sets line up with TopoDepot's seemingly erroneous NAD83 maps (see point 2). At least one of these GIS data sets was originally created in NAD27 and later "converted" to NAD83, leading me to believe that these public agency GIS data sets also not reprojected properly. I'd love to hear from Cliff Mugnier, the MapInfo-l projection and datum demigod, on this one. MI Re: Intelligent Use of ProViewer
Matts, As you I can probably guess, Proviewer is probably MapInfo with a couple of extra statements (MapBasic). My guess is that the LAST statements it does are to build a custom menu to set the button pads. This is why whatever you do works, is after you run the workspace, it does these things. Yes, Proviewer is very limited. Its a good viewer, but you can't do much. Dan - Original Message - From: Mats Elfstrvm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 10, 1999 7:59 AM Subject: MI: Intelligent Use of ProViewer Hi All! (Note that the following is NOT intended as Friday humor) I am trying to put ProViewer into intelligent use, and therefore I need to improve the user interface. I would like to be able to add some menu choices and display information in the message window. It is true that this can be done by using workspace files as macros, but apparently only to a certain extent. Printing to a message window works, but the message window closes immediately. By adding a Note clause, this is prevented temporarily but the Notebox blocks you from accessing the message window. The method can be used if you have a limited amount of output, and you can also Set the Message window. Adding Menu items works in a sense, but they are erased at once. I have found no way of preventing this behaviour. Lastly, I tried creating a ButtonPad but this is also erased by the program at once. All the above wor-files work as expected within Professional, but it seems as if ProViewer does not allow alterations. Since these are badly needed, I am wondering if anyone has found a workaround to this problem. Maybe we should issue a contest for the most clever ProViewer scripts of the week? MI Routing - SPIDER WEB
Ladies Gentleman, I need a specific routing algorythm as follows. From a given point, I have to find the closest intersection to a line network. For example, say I have an address, and I need to know the closest point on a fiber network, based upon driving distance (we are assuming we'd run cables down the street). So I don't really need routing, I need to "Drive" the network to find the closest fiber run, then report the distance. MI Re: PLSS Meridian Coordinates
Not going to happen. We've just done extensive work on this. Although the PLSS is a "grid", like anything else, there are exceptions to the rule. Its not a perfectly rectangular grid. I don't think you can generate it; you need to draw it. It will take you forever. You can find much of the PLSS stuff on the web, after an exhaustive search. Also, many state governments offer it for a reasonable fee (I think we paid $175 for Oregon, less in other states). You have to really know GIS, too, because they come in all different coordinate systems and projections! Good luck!
