I got one for my 123 ('77 300D RIP). It wasn't $100 to get it, however.

vintage Mercedes models for $100, this birth certificate comes
professionally bound in a black case, and makes an excellent
pride-of-ownership display that is suitable for framing.

... Ordering the Classic Certificate records the owner's name in the

I think the $100 would be better spent fixing the car.

No self-destructing harness, that started in the early '90s.

The seats are leather (not Tex), and they don't match the rest of the
interior. Looks like someone took seats from another 124 and had them
recovered by an upholstery shop when they started to split in the
usual place (the middle). I like the two-tone. A lot of cars have
that look now from the factory.

AC needs repair---at least the seller's honest.

$500-$1000 sounds about right to me, depending on the condition of the
body and the rest of the paint; whether it needs immediate suspension
work to drive right (a 124 with a loose rear end is a deathtrap); the
amount of oil leakage around the timing chain cover (they all do it,
some more than others); and whether there's any sign of an impending
blown head gasket (common on M103s).

Seats are some upholstery shop recover. Appears to have 4 speakers

common at the front left side, in front and below the #1 plug. It
may or may not go 50k miles as is, it it shows seepage there.

[MBZ] Diesel S Class making a comeback.

2011-01-15 Thread E M
Hey Guys,

I read that they showed a new S Class diesel that is due to make a return to
the US market this year. S350. Should be interesting. Regular gas is up
to $114.3 per/litre here today, and diesel is around $112. For months, it
seems diesel was more expensive than regular, but I see regular is now
edging back up over diesel, by a few cents per/L. I really think if
Mercedes got behind offering diesels in all their models, they would really
take off. Not everyone wants an electric car, I know I sure don't!! You do
see more and more diesel engines here, in models that Mercedes offer them
in. Lots of GL and MLs with diesels.

Yeah, I just read that too. To be fair, you need to compare diesel
fuel costs vs. premium gas as the last MB to burn regular was the 380
engine series.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel S Class making a comeback.

2011-01-15 Thread E M
According to what I read, Canadians are a bit more accepting of diesels than
Americans, at the moment. Seems Mercedes has plans though, which includes
diesels making up to 10% of their sales in the US, and 20% in Canada, in the
not too distant future. So your diesel C Class might possibly be on its way
one of these days. ;-)

My one request to Mercedes, is not to cheap down their S Class too much.
There seems to be this perception in North America, where if you want a
diesel, you want cheap. I'd like to see a diesel S Class, but I'd like to
see all options available on it, that are available on the gas models. Just
because someone doesn't feel the need to burn premium in a V12 that's
sitting in city traffic, doesn't mean they don't have an appreciation for
burl walnut, nappa leather, and other fine things. Might even be easier to
justify splashing out on some of those options, when you think about all the
money you'll be saving on fuel. hee hee

No, as in 380SEL.

My interpretation of the ad was that they pulled the engine and threw it away,
whatever chassis it used to reside in.

A 1985 SEL would be a W126, as I said.

I was thinking about parting out a running 450SEL. I mainly want it for the
interior. I wonder how hard it would be to put a roadster oil pan on the 450 and
stick it in the 380SL, assuming it really is an SL.

to $114.3 per/litre here today, and diesel is around $112.  For months, it
 seems diesel was more expensive

At my station, diesel and premium gas are the same price and biodiesel is
$1.12 more. And since MB now tacks on a hefty premium for diesels (was $1
grand for the E Bluetec) over gas cars, what exactly would the point be? And,
the hybrid W221s are not exactly flying off the shelves at my dealer, either.

I saw an S400 Hybrid this afternoon down the road. I have not yet
formulated an opinion, but it seems like overkill.

Where is the diesel coupe successor to the W123 300CD that exited the stage
in 1985?
