Re: [MBZ] 240D oil leak
I don't like that answer, please try another ;) I'm hoping I just didn't tighten it down enough and a little more force will seat the gasket but it does look an awful lot like the oil is coming out of the cap: http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/hires/W01331618930FEB.JPG?width=300&height=300 I *think* we wrenched on the cap a little trying to release the tension without having to remove the tensioner itself. Maybe I left the cap loose... There is a banjo thing on the front of the 616 too but its for coolant... -Curt Date: Thu, 30 May 2013 09:30:30 -0500 From: Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 240D oil leak Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Tensioner is not something you take apart as it is under spring pressure. you replace the unit. I have only seen leaks at the oring seal to the head. I can't remember the 616 style, but I think it is the same as older types that is held in with two bolts, one also being half on the exh manifold. OM60x is screw-in style. You remember which it is I am sure. 616 has been so reliable, I only ever had one apart, and that was years ago. OM621 also has a U shaped banjo fitting tube that runs from the front of the head to the front of the block. It is an oil supply. I have been guilty of forgetting to tighten those banjo fittings, leading oil leaks. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Took it for a 10 mile ride today and everything was fine except a lingering scent of burning oil. I figured I'd spilled a little when I changed it the other day but the smell just wouldn't quit. When I got home I had oil dripping off the engine under the passenger's side motor mount. I pulled the air cleaner assembly and ran the engine a little. It looks like the oil is coming from above the alternator, at least I can see it dripping onto the alternator bracket. Its not the valve cover gasket thats dry all the way around. After additional examination I think the leak is coming from the timing chain tensioner, looks like the head of the tensioner bolt has an aluminum gasket of some sort. We didn't replace that although we did put a new gasket on its base. Is that something we should have done? Looks like I need to pull it back apart (which involves shifting the AC compressor *sigh*) and give it a look. I do have an assortment of washers and gaskets and do-dads we didn't use when changing the head gasket. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
