[MBZ] Tree stains on 240D
Listers, While a project was ongoing in the shop, I parked the '83 240D out in the open away from the trees. During the night a 30+ mile-per-hour wind came through and blew bits of sap or whatever its called all over the car which left reddish stains on the light tan finish. I washed the car but the stains remained. These small bits of soft material probably came from oak trees since that is the commonest kind here; although it could have come from other kinds since it was a very strong wind. The last waxing with 3M Show Car Wax (Thanks Dan!) is still intact. The internet provides every possible solution imaginable; for example: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/removing-stains-made-leaves-sap-etc-657448/ https://www.google.com/search?q=oak+stains+car+finish&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-ab What to do? Re: [MBZ] Tree stains on 240D
I would start with some 50-50 mix of IPA (not beer, isopropyl alcohol) and water and if that doesn’t phase it, 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, 08984. You can often find it at WalMart or at a good NAPA for sure. You’ll have to re-wax the area you clean, but that’s a small price to pay to get the stuff off the finish. I vote for peanut butter to remove the sap. As for stain, I am not sure what will be best. I would at least try a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution, as that might do a number on the organic compounds without eating into the paint. Clay Bar is what I would chase that with to remove the really small organic stuff. Follow that with a very light correcting fluid and wax/sealant clay 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1986 SDL - Polei 1982 300 SD - Allen retired models- 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately & well tailored crap 1976 300D - Blei Vanst - it looks silvery 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers > On Apr 17, 2018, at 3:48 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > > I would start with some 50-50 mix of IPA (not beer, isopropyl alcohol) and > water and if that doesn’t phase it, 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, > 08984. Thanks, Dan. Hopefully something will work since it's a near perfect finish. Re: [MBZ] Tree stains on 240D
Thanks, Clay, It isn't sap, it's some sort of very soft objects not more than 3/4" long that sort of break up when you squeeze them; possibly oak. Re: [MBZ] Tree stains on 240D
By the time I've (hopefully!) removed all those little spots, I'll need some of that "good" IPA to finish he job, Dwight.
