Re: [MBZ] Anyone ever successfully obtain a title by surety bond in Illinois?
For older cars that have not been registered in several years many states purge the records after so many years. In other words, when you go in and fill out the statement of ownership and a lost title form and they look in the records the only documentation they have is what you have provided them so they either ask for vin verification or simply give you the title in your name. Here in the Vampire state anyway. Obviously won't help with this car but maybe some others. Re: [MBZ] Anyone ever successfully obtain a title by surety bond in Illinois?
California is worse. When I bought my 1962 300SE it was part of an estate and had not been on the road for 3-4 years. In order for me to gain title to the car they expected me to pay all of the registration fees for the missing years before I could take title of the car. The estate attorney pretty much told me I was up a proverbial creek, as they weren't going to pay the fees. In fairness to him he did write a very legal bill of sale so I had something to show ownership. I ended up telling the CA DMV to bite me and went to one of the lost title places in Alabama, I believe. Very quick and smooth process, cost me under $200 at the time and was done in a day via FedEx. I wasn't keen about this approach as it broke the chain of the car's history, but I wasn't about to be held up by the CA DMV for close to two grand, either. Re: [MBZ] Anyone ever successfully obtain a title by surety bond in Illinois?
Bill Wachsmuth was willing to help me but the timing was bad. He said that if you went to one of the non-State places that could do title work, like AAA, and you were a customer, that they could often get a lot of the old stuff tossed out and allow you to get a registration for much less. I just couldn't justify a trip to CA to sort it all out. Trying to deal with their DMV remotely was a nightmare in itself. Have the seller apply for a duplicate title before completing the purchase. Much easier for the current owner to get a duplicate title issued than go through all the pain of trying to buy a car without a title. Indiana has a similar convoluted process... http://www.in.gov/bmv/2957.htm If seller can't do this, I'd move on. I bought a 97 s420 a couple of weeks ago with a il title, I got the title but the owner on the title signed it over to his brother who I bought it from, so it's got his name in as the buyer etc but he never registered it here. Re: [MBZ] Anyone ever successfully obtain a title by surety bond in Illinois?
I have no experience in IL, but every state has a process for this. NJ has a similar one that takes a long time and is very cumbersome. But its possible. If you go for it, follow all the rules exactly. Kaleb... don't you have a lot of contacts at local dealers? Dealerships generally have people who know how to work the system and make title problems disappear. Jaime On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 7:22 PM, Kaleb C. I wonder if the (nice, obliging) brother can just title transfer directly you to? Darren 312-208-4328 On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 6:22 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Anyone ever successfully obtain a title by surety bond in Illinois?
it's possible to obtain a title and register a vehicle... I got the Frankenheap titled and registered to me, via WA's abandoned vehicle mechanism. It took some time, but only cost me the price of a registered letter to the PO of record, (returned unopened), and the mandatory State inspection for out-of-state cars. (Last registered in CA.) Took some time, though. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I thought about that but let's just say I picked the car up in a trailer park, not really the kind of people I want to fool with. This car seems to run just fine and interior is nice but it's got the Illinois surface rust on every panel and will either sell it as a cheap runner or part it out. It's borderline.
