Now that's a good point, Jim!

When I returned from Eugene, Oregon, in 2008, I ran into several zones
where there was no cell service. My brother in Seattle wondered why I
didn't call him back -- I had to explain there was no cell service.

These days, cell phones would do the job in most places

When the brother-in-laws moved from LA to NY a few years ago
we bought them a pair of handheld CB's. They were all "we'll
just use the cell phones." They didn't even make it out of
the greater LA area before the phone service crapped out.

My wife and I used CB radios on several coast-to-coast military moves back
in the day (driving 2 cars). I usually just used one of those magnetic roof
(or trunk) temporary mount whip antennas and ran the fire over a thick spot
in the door seal. Even hand-held radios worked OK with a decent antenna. I
never had a need or desire to mount one permanently in a car. These days,
cell phones would do the job in most places for just two vehicles but CB
would be handy for more.

Better yet.. spend the few bucks extra and get the model with rechargeable
batteries.. With an adapter, you can talk all you want and keep them
plugged into the car power port [formerly known as cigar lighter, back in
the day when men were men and ships were wood].
