When we got to the village, the people showed me where a 6-8 kilo stone fell, coming down right down the slanted roof of a hut, denting in the grass roof and making a large crater at the base of the hut. I do have a 13 gram fragment of it, (They smashed it). The meteorite is like Zag, large veins and slickensides. The 6 hour trip back to town last night was the most harrowing of my life, I would say at least 50 near head on collisions with giant trucks, busses, all without lights, cars on the wrong side of the road, washed out roads, cows of course (and they would much rather drive off a cliff and die than kill a cow here!). there should be hundreds of stones, but it is all rivers and swamps and rice paddies, all under several feet of water, so virtually none will be recovered. I saw photos of the 5 kilo stone, very nice. Anyway, sorry for the format of this email, but using the computer here is not easy. Anyway, it shows what a coward you are, what, not man enought to take the risks like I do, to go see where meteorites fall, or are you taking Caspers place as the money hunry dealer, not the slightest interested in the story as you are in making money. Re: [meteorite-list] ebay descriptions
I agree that categories like huge, museum quality ect. are subjective attributes. - a 10g Tatahouine is indeed huge, a 10g Campo isn't - for a small collector a 500g stone is huge and I found in some museum exhibitions some ugly rusted pieces too... And even oriented can be interpreted in different manners, although there is a tendency in ebay to praise everything as oriented which is not round and smooth like a bowling ball. With fusion crust it's completely different, it's a specific criterion of quality and thus of value too. I don't want to impute to those not so experienced sellers, that they use it to cheat the buyers - in most cases they just don't know it better and copy for example the flourish of the black bluish fusion crust from the descriptions of the dealers or because they found it in a book, although their pieces are totally cleaned down or tumbled. What would you say, if somebody sells you a car with air condition and it turns out that the air condition is in fact nothing else than the possibility to open the window? A specific European problem in ebay is now, that by a new law a seller can exlude all guarantees in claiming his auction as a private sale and many do so. And I'm sick and tired of telling to all those beginning collectors among my clients, which proudly show me their recent ebay acquiries, that their Nantans don't have regmaglyptes, that their Canyons don't have fusion crust, that their Campos don't have flow lines, that their NWA fragments aren't oriented... A few were so dissapointed, that they quit collecting... And there are a few sellers, who know exactely what they're doing. One f.e. in german ebay, who is selling Sikhote writes: There are two different types of Sikhote-Alin: Individuals, which show fine regmaglypts and fusion crust and shrapnells, which don't have fusion crust. Here you're bidding on a individual with fine regmaglypts full stop. And piff! the picture shows an overcleaned individual. Well he doesn't write explicitely, that his specimens do have fusion crust, but isn't it a little bit misleading? (uh it's an IMCA member). Anyway, perhaps smth more interesting for those which are bored by this ebay discussions: There is a funny evolution going on in german ebay concerning terminology: In German there exists no adequate single word to translate Individual (a more or less whole specimen vs. fragment, partslice...). Some translate it as Individuum, which means in german a single person or invent a new word Individualstück or smth. similar. Because Sikhote is the predominant locality in german ebay and more and more not so experienced sellers try to make some bucks with Sikhote and you find on the english spoken webpages Sikhote offered in most cases as individual and shrapnel, and because those inadequate translations into german sounds totally unknown, thus like a terminus technicus, to those novice sellers, now individual and shrapnel are used as true antonyms! With sometimes such funny consequences, that you can read in a description, that this stone is not a cheap shrapnel. If my englich wouldn't be so poor, I would finish this message with a bon mot of Bismarck. One lies never as much as before the election, during the war and after the hunt. ...AND IN EBAY!! You know with all the slamming going on of everyone and every thing, it is a nice breath of fresh air to see someone like MIKE FARMER doing what he is doing.I thank him totally with all my being going out to places that I never care to go to.Being out of work and making my priorities a full time job just looking for a full time job, this has really gotten me a chance to look back and see how much I appreciate what MIKE is doing for our great hobby.I am a simple ,but very PASSIONATE collecter, as you all know. But I also know that this list is consisted of alot of great people, especially the brainy types who have been doing this hobby for a living for along time.It just GUTS me when I see people slam others for what ever reason, when they are out there busting their ASS to bring back new specimens so we can all continue to enjoy this hobby that we so love.I hope mike will continue to do what he does for along time.Being only 32 he has alot more energy to do that than I being 49.I save my energy for the bedroom : ) Way to go mike.I look forward to seeing that new meteorite. And keep up the great job that you do so well. steve arnold, illinois meteorites chicago, ill. usa!! = Steve R.Arnold, Chicago, IL, 60120 I. Re: [meteorite-list] India Meteorite Report from the scene
Michael, With the exception of the initial Matteo rant, which kind of turned me off, the India trip report I find very interesting. Keep this up; these on site field reports. That is where you shine. Steve Schoner/ams Michael Farmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone, internet here is little better than smokesignals, it has taken me almost 2 hours to go through50 emails, so slow, and Matteo's crying like a 2 yearold baby. Matteo, shut the hell up, PLEASE, if I seeanother email about "Other people is make prices ruin"I will have to beat the hell out of you when I see you(Just kidding, but only a little).OKI am in the strewnfield. I have a small piece of the meteorite. IT is an Hchondrite and similar to Zag, veining andslickensides. There is EXTREME flooding here, all parts are underwater, there is NO HOPE of recovering more materialunless it is simply in a village and not known aboutyet. the strewnfield is some miles long, travelingbetween two villages that the local assured me wereonly 5 km apart by air took over 2 hours by road (ifyou can call it that). India is beautiful and horribleat the same time. The road is covered with untoldthousands of people, dogs, cows, goats, etc, NONE ofwhich move or are even slightly annoyed by theincessant use of the horn, we actually ran over a dogsfoot yesterday, he would not move until the car ranright over him. I felt sorry for it but then again ifanything is that stupid.I also wish I had a gun with me, to put some of thestupidist creature on the planet (The cow) out oftheir misery (or ignorant bliss) whichever it is.There are thousands of them, laying in the roads, carsjust go around them whereever possible. the entire area is flooded, and I mean bad, hundredsof thousands of miles under water, looks like theocean with small patched of trees and huts standingout of it. Roads are almost not more than small trailswith everyone and everything blocking them. Most of the meteorite has been taken by the police, Iam working on tracking down a couple of pieces, but itlooks hopeless as it takes me 6 hours to get to thearea even though it is only 70 miles away, the maxspees is about 10 miles an hour on the highway andabout 2 miles an hour on the village route. these are small villages, I mean aobut 10 famileseach, no electricity, nothing more than some mud hutsin a land of mud. I had to go on motorcycle for a fewmiles last night with a spectacular lightning show inthe distance, it was the most eery and beatiful driveI have ever taken, the flooded swampland, cool wind, nice people and all made me fell like I was in somesort of 16 th century expedition. When we got to thevillage, the people showed me where a 6-8 kilo stonefell, coming down right down the slanted roof of ahut, denting in the grass roof and making a largecrater at the base of the hut. That stone was taken 2days ago, but I have two competing guys traking downthe person who took it, to get it for me. We will seeif this hut smasher comes home with me. I do have a 13gram fragment of it, (They smashed it). The meteoriteis like Zag, large veins and slickensides. The 6 hour trip back to town last night was the mostharrowing of my life, I would say at least 50 nearhead on collisions with giant trucks, busses, allwithout lights, cars on the wrong side of the road, washed out roads, cows of course (and they would muchrather drive off a cliff and die than kill a cowhere!).there should be hundreds of stones, but it is allrivers and swamps and rice paddies, all under severalfeet of water, so virtually none will be recovered.I saw photos of the 5 kilo stone, very nice. Anyway, sorry for the format of this email, but usingthe computer here is not easy.Anyone thinking of coming to get some, forget it, asit is, with my 13 gram piece, i will have paid over$400.00 gram for my piece! But I will have memories ofa lifetime of this hunt, which doing it alone, Ialready consider by far my most exotic andinteresting. the people in the villages do not speak english orHindi, but Orissi, a local tribal language. the meteorite fell only about 1/2 mile from the Bay ofBengal (but now it seems to be in the Bay of bengalwith everything under water anyway). Re: [meteorite-list] mike farmer
Dear Steve and List, I think your letter was very well put, and just about says, what alot of us feel. When I joined this list, I was made aware of the fact, that we are a diversified (multiplicity, variety ) group of individuals, with the common ground, being our individual interests in Meteorites. Whatever facet you fall under, you are part of the whole. That's what makes this list so great. Then there's the fact, that basic human nature dictates, not everyone, is going to agree, or feel the same on different controversies. Shouldn't have to, and it's IMPOSSIBLE to think that anyone is totally right or wrong. Too many grey areas in this field, but individual input, helps put things into perspective. Another great thing about this List. Personally I, as an individual, greatly admire and respect , and can openly admit, envy, Mike Farmers abiities and wherewithal, to do what he is trying to do in India, against all odds. Plus am very grateful, that he is sharing this adventure and insight, with all of us, as it happens. Real passion, dedication and grit !!! Obviously, I am not a business person. But there are many on-list that are. They make it possible also, in their way, to make available merchandise ( meteorites) to buy. A different, but important, sort of contribution,( because, not everyone can, or wants to be, a Michael Farmer). I'm sure there are some that applaud Matteo's Business coup'e in possibly aquiring a piece of India's latest meteorite, without having to go there and get his hands dirty. Bottom line, no matter where you fit in the spectrum.you fit ! It's all about Meteorites. Look at the bright side Michael and Matteo. It could be worse..thankfully, the likelihood of your future sons and daughters, ever meeting, falling in Love and getting married, making you in-laws, will never be an issue. You have much to be Thankful for. Past: Romeo + Juliet , not that far past : Hatfield's and McCoy's, future: Farmer's and Chinellato's. Perish the thought!! [meteorite-list] India report #2.
Good evening everyone, it is 10 pm here in Bhubaneswar India. another rainy day, more flooding, lots of problems. I went back to Kendrapara today, and was able to break through the absolutely hopeless Indian beurocracy and see the meteorites. I had to go to their version of a state or city hall, the place in charge of the surrounding area. They are working on the flood emergency, and told me that over 1000 villages are submerged and so many people dead, interestingly the Indian Government only reports 17 dead, and according to the locals, it is in the hundreds. Anyway, after alot of talking, explaining who I was and liberal if not quite true use of the word University, and making formal request letters to see and photograph the stones, the convened a meeting, made alot of phone calls, and just at dark I finally got authorization to go to the finance department and open the vault and play with the meteorites. The two stones they still have here are 5.7 kilos and a 500 gram fragment. They are stored in a large metal lock box, sealed with cord and then sealed with a wax stamp to avoid tampering. They do not really know what they are, and with the government people all demanding the stones, they have refused to release them to anyone since they do not understand who they belong to. It seems that the local and federal government are about to fight over them. I got to fully examine them, and took about 40 photos, but since the sun had set and they had one tiny light in the building, I dont know how well they will come out. The large stone was very nicely regmaglypted, but one side was broken off, and already very badly weathered only two weeks after the fall. The wet climate takes it's toll on meteorites fast. The other piece was from another stone which the villagers had broken up, and the other pieces have all been taken already. It is a breccia, like I said nice slickensides, i could not see many chondrules, but clearly an H chondrite. There is no possibility of any acquisition of these pieces, they made a special file just for me that I opened the box and examined the stone. It seems that in India, a file is made for even the slightest thing, as I said, just to see the stones I had to make a formal letter, get it signed by about 20 people, and authorized by countless more by telephone. The local government people were absolutely fascinated though. they asked me so many questions, and one of them thought that this was the first time in history that a stone had fallen from space, hence the reluctance to even show them. They were all afraid of radiation or viruses, and all did not understand why the stone burned. I explained the super high velocity is the cause of the fireball and burning, but they could not comprehend a stone burning because it was moving so fast. there was also an armed guard there while I opened the box! I was reported to the police by the cheif of the Suniti village, where the large stone fell, he wanted me to give him money yesterday so that he could get me a stone, I refused so I guess he called the state police today and reported me stealing a large stone, the police were surprised when I showed up at the station today, as I could only be the American who was to be arrested on sight. Of course they laughed it off, I did not find it quite as ammusing. Overall, even though the extreme beurocracy is what seems to stifle the Indian government, they were all very nice and just wanted to cover their own butts as it was explained to me. I doubt I will get any other pieces, so tomorrow is a tourism day, beach and temples. I saw alot of very tame monkeys today, ad even fed a few some bananas from on top of my head! You put a little banana up on your head, and the monkeys run right up your back and sit on your head eating away! I must say, that I appreciate every single day of travel that meteorites have brought me, even though it seems I will lose my shirt on this trip, oh well, ill make it up next time when I get the next fall. I am so pleased that I got my own little piece of this fall, bought right from the tiny village where it smashed the edge of a hut. I will never part with that piece. I have tons of photos, and will make a nice web page when I get home. But hey, all is not over yet, we are waiting on a phone call from the villages, and if it comes Ill go get a large stone, it is out there, hiding from me for now, but I have two more full days here in the strewnfield to make up for lost time. For those of you who like these rambling emails, thanks for listening, for those who hate me, oh well, I will never apologize for being myself, I may say things that should not be said sometimes, and I am sorry for that, but to me I value a person who speaks their mind and lets their feelings be known much more than a coward who lies to your face. I am exausted again, driving at night here is the worst kind of Russian Roulette, and it takes it's toll. Until tomorrow. Another
Re: [meteorite-list] India report #2.
Mike, Just wanted to thank you for taking me - and everyone else on the List - along with you on your latest hunting adventure. I'm one of the, shall we say, "less well off" members of the List, and I can't afford to jump on a plane and do an Indiana Jones like you do, so it is always a treat to be able to travel virtually with you, and others, to far flung corners of the globe in search of new specimens. I wish you nothing but good fortune on this trip, seriously. What I think some others in this community forget is that you're representing ALL of us out there, and I think you're doing a bloody good job, if you'll excuse my language. So, good luck out there - go get 'em! :-) My own travelling is rather more modest. Two weeks ago I was up in the Shetland Islands - a scattering of tree-less, wind-swept, sea-battered, aurora-lit rocky outcrops so far north of Scotland they're almost as close to Norway as they are to the British mainland - doing some "Outreach" work in schools up there. It rained almost the whole week, so much I was either going to start growing gills or building a big boat and rounding up pairs of animals, but I had an amazing time. I visited 5 different schools in 5 days, some small, some big, but all the kids I talked to - and the total must have been around 400 over the week - were fascinated by astronomy, and absolutely hypnotised by the selection of meteorites I took along with me to show them and let them hold. Up there, almost totally free from light pollution, and blessed with skies that overflow with stars when the icy North Atlantic winds blow the clouds away, they've had a spectacular view of Mars over the summer, so you can imagine how thrilled they were to be able to see and actually hold tiny pieces of Zagami. My much-travelled Canyon Diablo was passed around again and again, and other pieces were received just as enthusiastically. Wonderful kids, really, so polite and curious, and such fun too! In a school on a tiny island called Whallsay, one girl, Heather, patiently listened to me telling her group how cold Pluto was then raised her hand with a question: "So," she asked in her almost-Scandanavian accent, face absolutely dead-pan serious, "if I went to Pluto with my cat, and threw it outside without a spacesuit on, would it freeze solid?" That was enough of a stunner, but when she went on to enquire if her petrified cat would "break into bits" if she hit it with a hammer I lost it, totally cracked up, even as the teacher looked on aghast, hand over mouth, from the sidelines. ( Turned out the class had seen a demonstration of a rose dipped in liquid oxygen the week before, and Heather put two and two together to make 5...! ) The Shetlands are Viking country, and the Norse mythology about the sky, particularly the aurora, is fascinating. Apparently when the Norse people witnessed an aurora they thought they were seeing, among other things, the Dead playing with the head of a walrus, or clans of gods fighting, splashing blood (the red aurora) across the sky... Didn't find any meteorites as I wandered the broad, sandy beaches, under a truly enormous sky, but maybe next time. What I do have, which is almost as good, is a big pile of Thank You letters from many of the kids I met, many of them sharing their excitement about getting to hold the meteorites and "bits of Mars", which are very special. So, not exactly India, but just as exciting in its own way. Good luck out there Mike, you're doing a fine job. I'm sure I speak for a lot of folks on this List, the silent majority, when I say that I'm proud of ya - and very grateful for letting me ride in your pocket as you hunt! Take care, Stu

Hi, I have to throw in my 2g's worth here - seems that some people on the list spend too much of their time trawling eBay looking for auctions to criticise and debunk and publish their 'findings' to the list. Fine in principle, but we are not here to police eBay - I think that Caveat Emptor should prevail here. [meteorite-list] Orissa India--- Of Floods, meteorites and Man-and Turtles too
Dear All- and Mike Farmer While poor people of the area have just had their thached (straw) roofs blow off their Mud houses ,and their mud houses are turning into more mud,and people are dying and even more will die from the diseases to come,we get to hear about the carnage ,and learn about their misery sitting at our computers. Into this mayhem that is India arrives one Foreigner(as they are called) in 2 cars/jeeps with a purpose. He wants the rocks that fell from the sky. Mike travels exactly half way around the world for meteorites, and ends up with a flood, starvation, and disease. Not to mention he is among people who have never seen a refrigerator- and would not know what to do with it even if they did see one. They have neverknown electricity- unless they travel to town. Maybe he can do something to help the poor people there, even if they dont have METEORITES TO BARTER FOR FOOD. COWS- They are a part of the household- almost a member of the family- like a pet dog is- sort of- They wander during the day looking for foliage, and in the evening come back home - to be milked. The reason they are on the road in Mikes way is because they are lost- or decide they dont want to sit in the flooded area today. They are trying to stay dry, or maybe their way home is blocked by water. Milk is the major source of protien and fat for most of India. The milk extracted is usually gone fast -They dont need refrigerators- there are more mouths in the household than the cow can fill. ROADS Mikes description of the road travel left out this- As the only decent part of the road is the middle every vehicle travels in the middle of the road. There is nothing dividing oncoming traffic from your vehicle. When you see a vehicle coming- you have to make a quick decision whether you want to get off the road or if you want to get him off the road or if you want to see if he wants to play the who,s going to get off last game. The larger (read TATA) usually wins the middle ground. I musttell youabout the TATA tramplers - (These are 7 ton trucks loaded with 20 -30 tons of freight- i call them Tramplers) hopelessly overloaded ,usually leaning to one side, engines over-revving under the load, and they do trample everthing in their path. Travelling in rural Indiacan be great fun.I go as often as i can, doing volunteer Wildlife work while i am there. INDIAN HOSPITALITY If there is one bed in the home- the guest sleeps in it- the rest on the floor. If there is one meal- for the whole family to share- the guest gets it. It is very very humbling to learn that there is so much we can learn from these poor people. The tone of mikes email seems to suggest he has finally found what enthalls people of the world with India. There is so much to love - and so much to dislike. It is a land of paradoxes. His emails exude a sense of resigned acceptance about the things he is seeing.makes me homesick just reading his emails. Anyway my contact reports that Recovery efforts have been dismal. The water is everywhere as the mini cyclone from last week brought the ocean to the peoples doorstep in more ways than one. MIKE- Ask about when the Arribida is- Millions of Indian Sea Going turtles come to the very beaches you are near to lay their eggs and then even more millions hatch and go back to the sea to continue the cycle that has continued from times immemorial .It is a sight of a lifetime. The turtles that hatch here- will only come back to the very beach they were born - in a few years to lay their eggs.Radio telemetry has established this recently. And it took us 2000 AD yrs to discover GPS.The turtles have us beat by a few million years. PS- the word Arrabida wascoined by the spanish inhabitants of India-I think it means the arrival. Regards Atul kumar
Re: [meteorite-list] eBay policemen?
Thanks Dave I liked the way you phrased that. I have been bypassing some of the posts for the more interesting and informative ones like Mike's and Atul's. My minor was anthropology, so I find hearing about India interesting. Its also a look into what can be expected when one travels for any reason. When one travels abroad, searching for meteorites or just for pleasure, one really needs to keep in mind (and an open mind at that) that you will often leave the western world behind and enter into a civilization that is so different that its hard to comprehend. I wish I had the fore-sight when I was younger to search for meteorites when I was overseas. But I enjoyed those far away lands all the same. This list has opened the world up for me again and although I do travel and camp a lot here in the northwest, its not the same as being in a non-western country. I would like to hear of some of the other major meteorite hunting peoples exploits in distant lands. Maybe, if they read the list, they will post some of their travels and enlighten those less fortunate or willing. I find that as much fun as the meteorites they find and buy. Great story, Mike, but I don't concider dying of a heart attack a meteorite kill. No more than someone dying of a heart attach ifthey found outthey paid thousands of dollars for what latter turned out to be a piece of slag. Would you call that a meteorwrong death? Hello List, Please correct me if I am wrong! Please try to be polite when doing so! : ) I think it hurts us all when some one uses misleading tactics to sell meteorites. Why do I think that? I will tell you. Ebay is by far the best, cheapest and easiest place to get meteorites. Lets say someone new goes on ebay and sees a 2000g Campo described as "HUGE" and looks around and there is no Campo larger on ebay at the time, the buyer goes back to the auction and finds a IMCA link, clicks on it and learns what a honest bunch of sellers IMCA members are. The new buyer even clicks on a few links and does not see a Campo that big on any of the sites. The buyer will feel like he is getting a Huge Campo at a great price. He goes back to the auction and uses Buy it now. He gets it and is thrilled with this Huge Campo. He gets the "BUG" and goes back to Ebayto look around. This time he finds a 94lb Campo, but his campo was huge? So what is a buyer to think? DON"T TRUST THEM DISHONEST IMCA MEMBERS, that whole bunch are full of #%$(# ! Now what, buy from none IMCA members, OK, and it turns out to be slag! Oh well, this meteorite collecting thing sucks! You can not trust anyone! Personally and practically, a 2kg meteorite of any type usually I regard as 'huge' mainly because it would have cost me a lot ofmoney - I have been collecting for a few years and I don't have anything approaching 2kg in size, so for me 'huge' is an appropriate adjective! Also, I would, if Iwere that buyer, look around sosee what else was on offer in order go guesstimate the correct sort of price, and decide that if it is good value and looks good then ok, it may not be a 3/4 ton Otumba as in the NHM (London) but for domestic collections it is pretty substantial. It is all relative! But I agree with Tom's last statement that theperhaps the seller oughtto check out what 'huge' is relative to the rock he is selling. Re: [meteorite-list] eBay policemen?
Hello all, why can't people write 1500g Campo in their description instead of saying huge Campo. Instead, they make people look at the auction to see what the sellers idea of huge is. What would ebay be like if everyone simply wrote meteorite in the description, you would have to look at every auction to find what you are looking for. I don't want to look at every auction to find the size I am looking for. Mike, Thanks for making the effort to post a report of your adventure in India. News like yours makes wading through the garbage on the Meteorite List worth the effort. and Matteo, I know there are several List members who have had to deal with your unorthodox and questionable business ethics, including myself. Your silence would be greatly appreciated, John Gwilliam At 09:52 AM 10/10/03 -0700, Michael Farmer wrote: Good evening everyone, it is 10 pm here in Bhubaneswar India. another rainy day, more flooding, lots of problems. Re: [meteorite-list] India Meteorite Report from the scene
Hi Steve and List, I also find field reports such as this to be interesting reading. Just think, we get to read about these trips as they happen and our kids can read about them from later books andperiodical articles. In fact, I hope Mike and others who recover meteorites publish their reports in book form one day. -Walter --www.branchmeteorites.comWalter Branch, Ph.D.Branch MeteoritesPO Box 60492Savannah, GA 31420 - Original Message - From: Steve Schoner To: Michael Farmer ; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 10, 2003 10:30 AM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] India Meteorite Report from the scene Michael, With the exception of the initial Matteo rant, which kind of turned me off, the India trip report I find very interesting. First of all, any of the folks that I referred to having personal knowledge of your unorthodox and questionable business ethics can speak for themselves if they so choose. Since my communications with them was private, I'll not post any of our conversations without their permission or approval. Before you began using Paypal, you won one of my meteorites on Ebay. You emailed me and said you'd be sending me cash in the mail. When you letter arrived, it contained several U.S. twenty dollar bills. The problem was that your payment was short twenty dollars. When I contacted you by email and told you about the shortage, your first claimed I was trying to cheat you. My reply to you was simple - your payment was short twenty dollars and the meteorite wouldn't be sent to you until the problem was corrected. Your next email blamed the problem on the corrupt Italian mail system. I actually got quite a laugh out of the idea that a crooked Italian postal clerk would steal just one twenty dollar bill out of six. To be fair, I will say that you did send the missing twenty dollars and your meteorite was sent to you. During a conversation with another dealer, I mentioned the missing twenty dollars. He commented that this was a standard practice with you. Checking with a few more folks in the meteorite community, I got similar responses. The other incident you refer to in you post is incorrect. It did not involve a meteorite on Ebay, but was the most recent sale I posted to the List. The sale, as always, said first come, first served or something similar to those words. Nowhere did I mention that I would accept trades. I received an email from you requesting me to put a specimen on hold for you and would I be interested in doing a trade. I replied no and you next email to me asked If I would accept delayed payment from you - somewhere in the time frame of two weeks to a month, I don't remember exactly. During the time between your emails, someone else contacted me and said they wanted the specimen and would send payment as soon as I sent them a total. The way I see it, Matteo, you missed out on getting the specimen in question because you were too busy trying to negotiate a trade (which I didn't want) and/or a delay of payment(which I didn't agree to). During the rest of the day, I received SIX emails from you where you ranted and raved about injustice...blah, blah, blah. Same old, same old. Now if anyone else chooses to share with the List any of their experiences with you, that's their business. I'd think most of them would want to avoid your tirades of verbal diarrhea so they'll probably shy away. [meteorite-list] Possible Ebay Solution re: Policeman etc.
Good evening list, Been a while since I threw in my 2 grams worth on a subject. Tom, and others, you bring up a good points with regards to size of meteorites and cost relation, etc. It seems to me that meteorite auctions are a bit trickier to post than say, Wedgewood china, Waterford crystal, etc. Again you are still at the mercy of the seller, in that fake china pieces abound, but for the most part, the seller sometimes will have closeups of Mfgr / markings, artist signatures, etc. We in the meteorite community don't have that benefit. I for one would like to see a dealer, if the desire moves them, to offer a modestly priced meteorite Sampler Box to newbies jsut looking into getting this hobby. I don't mean 10 or 25 samples, but maybe 3, i.e. an iron, an ordinary chondrite, and possibly a piece of inexpensive pallasite. Along with the samples would obviously be information about meteorites, and meteorwrongs for that matter. Keeping the price low, and advertising it as Starter kit would allow persons who don't have any idea what to look for, or any knowledge about meteorites, a new beginning. I still have a few of Ninninger's starter kits and have been surprised (considering all of the Ebay consternation) no-one has tried to duplicate Ninninger's sample/ starter kit. If the cost factor is a problem, just offer one sample. At least a newbie, unwisely putting a bid on an obvious piece of slag, (and possibly a large bid) won't get burned. If the newbie chooses to ignore an offering of an educational Sampler Box and opts for the big one...well that's their choice. As is said in the Indiana Jones movie: He chose unwisely. As it is now, some bidders don't know about IMCA, or possibly don't care. The Meteorwrong pages that some members offer are EXCELLENT. The question is: how do you get a newbie to go to it? And would the pages translate from the meteorwrong page back to the Ebay page? It may be very confusing to the person just introduced to this science. Anywho. Re: [meteorite-list] Possible Ebay Solution re: Policeman etc.
Good question and a good suggestion. One of the problems with ebay is they do not allow links to any pages that also have sale pages on the same site. They want exclusive market. You can link from your me page though, but that doesn't help the newbie as most don't have a clue about how to get around ebay well. Linking to your auctions from your website is ok, it brings in money to ebay. What we could do is see about a meteorite chat board on ebay. They do help the new and unknowing with problems. I'll write them and see. Re: [meteorite-list] Orissa India--- Of Floods, meteorites and Man-and Turtles too
Hi Mike Farmer, Atul Kumar and List, First of all, many thanks to M.F. for his very interesting emails on India and his "adventures" in meteorite-chasing there. I am pleased to know that he has a fragment already and that, probably against all odds, burocracy, etc, he has managed to examine and photograph thepieces in the hands of the local authorities, well done!! His very brief description of that part of India - a beautiful country, I think, - brought me memories (excluding the car traffic parts), of Kipling's "KIM" that Iread many years ago! He also mentioned the houses without electricity: Could it be that, in the process of the meteorite having hit a thatched house, the reported fire might have be caused by some oil lamp being knocked down by the impact? On another subject: Atul mentions the word "Arribida" as being Spanish:This word (the correct spelling is "arribada" or "arriba") exists in both the Portuguese and Spanish languages and most probably it is rather of Portuguese origin as Portugal's occupation and influence on some areas of India lasted almost 500 years (untill 1961 to me more exact); in fact, to this day, there is still large Indian comunities of Portuguese extraction in Goa, Damão and Diu, who speak excellent Portuguese and have Port. surnames.Yes,"arribada" means "arrival" - in fact, in the 15th Century Portuguese language, it was (and still is) a NAUTICAL term, meaning "to enter a sailing ship in a harbour other than it's destiny, as a means to avoid/escape aseastorm". During the golden age of the Port. sea-discoveries, expansionand trade, many Port. wordswere adopted/used (often in a corrupted way) bypeople from several other countries in Asia and elsewhere. For instance, during the height of the Port. commercial trade in Asia during the16th Century, Port. traders carried in their ships aspecially made boxwhere theyput the coin money in; So, whenever they wanted payment to be made in coins rather than in other objects, they insisted in a payment to "pôr em CAIXA" (to putin the BOX) - and to this day, thePort. word CAIXA became CASH (and therefore, caixeiro = cashiers), used worldwide through the English language. So much about meteorites, India and arribada! That's explains the "diversity" of cultures and meteoritepeople that makes this List (whenever there is no ugly arguments), so interesting. Keep up the good work and good luck, Mike, and please keep that meteorite fragment plus that CASH of yours in a safe place!Cheers! [meteorite-list] India, new message
Good morning all. I want to clarify a couple of things, we all seem to forget that while meteorites are important, people are far more inportant. The poor people here have no luck, the rains and floods come every year, thousands die, then every few years cyclones wipe the entire area clean, only to start the cycle again. there is nowhere else for the people to go, they have to live here. I must say that the people here are the NICEST I have ever met anywhere in the world, the children are so inquisitive, we played some games yesterday while waiting in a village. I am not driven by my hunt for meteorites, I already have given away basically everything i brought except the clothes I still need to get home. there are about 20 people wearing $20 to $50 shirts, which cost more than they make in a year! I always do this, I take clothes, and toys and give them away. I had no room for toys unfortunately, but the children here live the lives they should, playing, swimming, and fishing all day. India is indeed the worts poverty and the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I will indeed be coming back, making India a high priority on my trips to see the world, it will take many trips to even get a glimpse of this large country. I cant explain what I have seen, the sights and smells, all mixed into a large collage of colors, rich and poor, dirty and pristine, all mixed together. The landscape of flloded fields, rice paddies, palm trees, towering thunderstorms, and monkeys playing in the road is like nothing i have ever seen. If you want to know this place, you must come here, photos and stories tell nothing, you must experiance it. While I might get frustrated at the roads, it is fascinating, so alien to me to see what I have seen. I thought Burkina Faso was wild, it has NOTHING on India. I highly suggest anyone with the time and means come here, you wil lnever forget it. So as far as the meteorite goes, to me this trip was a perfect success, financially it is a disaster, so when Iget home, I must hold another sale to help pay the bills which will come in the mail, regardless of whether I get any meteorite or not. You should all thank whatever god you believe in or just fate that you were fortunate enough to have what you have, these people have nothing, and the floods take even that away. then the government comes and takes their meteorite as well with no compensation whatsoever. Please note, I cannot check my comcast mail from here, for whatever reason, so if you are trying to contact me that way, please use this address, sorry I cant email all of you privately, too many emails, and internet is so hard to use here it isnt even funny. Matteo, I can now see that you are very anti-american. That is your business, but I hope anyone from the USA on this list see's that and would never deal with you again. You are nothing but a lier and a theif (Dont think that I have forgotton the pieces of Fredericksburg that you bought from me 2 years ago and never paid for)! I have written them off, they were small and I dont have the time to even try and get them or the money from you, I would never have mentioned this, but you have dug yourself so deep a hole that you will never climb out. And by the way, tell that other Italian guy who stole the Esquel piece the same way, to pay me the $100 he owes me (YEAH RIGHT). Mike Farmer uses the word large and puts the weight in there too! He sells a lot of meteorites, proving to me, that you do not need to trick people to sell meteorites. And this thing turned into an IMCA discussion, it did not start out that way!!! ONE MORE TIME Hey Folks! Where do we conduct IMCA related business? ..The IMCA mailing list of course!! (I am suggesting to the BOD (board of directors) at IMCA, that they adopt a policy that ALL IMCA business be restricted to the IMCA list unless specifically authorized otherwise. This Witch Hunt is out of control Ag!H!) Tom aka James Knudson wrote: snip Lets say someone new goes on ebay and sees a 2000g Campo described as HUGE...snip. He gets it and is thrilled with this Huge Campo. -NOTE: he is thrilled you said so yourself He gets the BUG and goes back to Ebay to look around. This time he finds a 94lb Campo, but his campo was huge? So what is a buyer to think? DONT TRUST THEM DISHONEST IMCA MEMBERS, that whole bunch are full of #%$(# ! ) Now what, buy from none IMCA members, OK, and it turns out to be slag! Oh well, this meteorite collecting thing sucks! You can not trust anyone! I see you are impassioned about this but, has anyone come to you and lodged a specific complaint? Or is this a debate about the number of angels who can dance on the head of a pin? What punishment are you advocating? Stoning them with their own auction? lol Tom you are old enough to know that to men size is relative and subject to inflation in their imaginations!! I don't see the beef! Thanks, Tom wondering if I should be the proudest member of the IMCA 6168 Well Frankly, I have always wondered how you got that title. I didn't get the notice of competition! Not that I care who claims it, but how can you attack other's freedom of expression and use the self proclaimed title of proudest member? Do you see my point? Seems you are saying that it is wrong only if it isn't your wording. (Yeah I know I sound harsh but Don't wager it if you aren't willing to lose it and not whine.) All kidding aside now. ONE MORE TIME: IMCA Business on IMCA net!!! Why is that such a hard concept to follow? Post to your hearts content overthere. IMCA has a procedure for approaching the sellers of questionable auctions. IMCA has a procedure of taking up complaints against members who are accused of violating the IMCA policies and the BOD will investigate and decide who is in violation not the member. That said, What do you want the meteorite central list members to do for you?
