[meteorite-list] What should your first meteorite be?
Hi Rhonda, I was intrigued by your post and it got me thinking! "#1- once I get the first I'll be bit big time and I won't be able to stop myself." Yep... I think we'll all agree with that one! ;-) "#2 - I want the first one to be special and I can't figure out what exactly it should be." Now the whole first meteorite thread has been done numerous times and I'm sure it's in the archives but you made me stop to think about it a bit further. There are people on this list who have been collecting for many, many years and some for just a short time. But knowing what we do now, what would everyone's first meteorite be if they had the chance over again? Mine was a nice little 25.9g Sikhote-Alin individual. I suspect many others also had either SA's or Canyon Diablo's as their first meteorite. The funny thing is that even though my collecting habits have moved in a different direction, I still think a nice little Sikhote was the best option. Just because I guess it's what you might 'expect' a meteorite to look like. So I think your idea of asking the list is a great idea and I don't believe that it's "too pedestrian". I'd actually be really interested to hear what others think and if they would choose differently now. And maybe there will be some advice there that works for you. There are some very knowledagble people on this list Rhonda and when I joined I was also a little intimidated. However I soon learned that this is a unique and very welcoming hobby with great, friendly people. Re: [meteorite-list] 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Own A Meteorite!
It is an interesting discussion and fun too. I have never noticed any difference between males or females interest in meteorites when speaking in front of a general group (school class for example). What I have noticed is a more obsessive behaviour in males compared to females. That doesn't have anything to do with meteorites and can be seen in most hobbies. ... at least that is my experience. I bought my first meteorite ten years ago, an etched Gibeon cube, when I was on a mineral fair. A couple of days later I gave it to my girlfriend without telling her what it was. She would get it if she could tell me what it was. At first I got a disgusted "A piece of rusty iron pipe!" out of her, she expected a gemstone when I told her I bought something on that fair. Second guess came not long after, "It's a meteorite!" She still cherish that meteorite, she just got rid of me. :-) For me it took another seven years until I bought my first meteorite but now I'm just as obsessive as any male collector. Enough now, I think I will pour a glass of wine and look at my meteorite collection a while. Cheers! The comment "Chicks dig meteorites." is a simple play on words from the slogan "Chicks dig scars.". I thought that would be a cool thing to add in the list to get a laugh out of everyone that read it. In fact I thought of all the things that someone would debate over would be the opinions and theories I presented in numbers 8 & 9... Some peoples reactions however are way more interesting to say the least and probably some comments should be reigned in a bit so as not to offend any of the many women who do truly "Dig meteorites!" :) My girlfriend loves them, my girl cousins love them, my mother and sister love them, and if you're sitting in a bar and place one on the counter it won't take long for someone to ask what it is... Women are very much interested in meteorites! If you're simply talking statistics, I'm sure women can agree that from a purely statistical and scientific point of view the male of our species (not to use the word MAN :) ) out numbers the females in this particular interest group. Even saying this could be arguable and could promote even more debate which could be good if people are lighthearted about it... ;) To all who have responded thus far THANKS! To all who are about to respond to my comments Be Gentle Please... ;) Eric Wichman www.MeteoritesUSA.com www.Meteoritewatch.com __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi, all, My post was meant as levity. I hope no one is taking this thread personally or seriously! Re: [meteorite-list] 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Own A Meteorite!
Hi All, I really didn't want to add my input to this, but I wasn't thinking that Ruben was putting us women down. I think he just meant that compared to the men there are a lot of women that really don't have an interest in meteorites. I have several girlfriends, one went with me to the desert, because she likes to walk. Another asked me to not forward any more meteorite related things to her, so her husband liked it. Others look at them and remark a quick answer and then don't ever ask about me finding more of them. Only my German friend loves to look at them with a magnifying glass even! It is much better with my men friends. They seem to talk about the where they were found and what kind they are. With best regards, Moni PS. These stones make my heart jump, better than my boyfriend can do! [meteorite-list] Carancas is official
Matteo wonders: "H chondrite? ... strange ...similar to ... L chondrite" Hello Matteo, Jeff G. and List, That's why I wrote this on Sun Oct 07-2007 with regard to the thin section pictures you can view here (it was Sterling who posted the link) : http://www.ingemmet.gob.pe/paginas/pl01_quienes_somos.aspx?opcion=320 "... there is a "conglomerate" of what may have been one or several large BO chondrules (chondrule fragments). This causes a bit of a headache because, if this is or was a large BO chondrule, I wouldn't rule out an L chondrite as H chondrites *tend* to have smaller chondrules!" But I was careful and wrote "H chondrites *tend* to have smaller chondrules". One of my Carancas specimens has a beautiful 0.7 mm chondrule protruding completely from the surrounding matrix - large enough to consider it an L chondrite. But: Chondrule size is not the only criterion! These Fa and Fs values below definitely place Carancas in the realm of the H chondrites: Olivine (Fa18.4±0.5) and pyroxene (Fs16.1±0.2) Some examples with (almost) identical Fa and Fs values: DaG 016 (H5) - DaG 299 (H4) - Dhofar 834 (H4) - Round Top (b) (H4) Carancasically, Bernd __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] (Most) Women Love Meteorites!
Count my wife in. She loves them and often brings them up in her own conversations with others. She seems just as excited to go to Tucson again - Weird (but very cool)! My mother and mother-in-law also love coming over and staring at the collection cabinets. All of the women at my work have purchased micros of lunar meteorites for themselves and to give out for Christmas. Maybe it's a Washington state thing :) Collecting meteorites is such a rare and dynamic hobby that I usually won't mention it around people I have just met. The truth is that the majority of people cannot conceive the ability to own something from space. Of course, many people cannot truly conceive how much one trillion dollars is either. Mike, Eric and all, What I is mean is this.. I played guitar in many bands for years. Women loved that, I know because they always approached me afterward and asked questions such as: Do you have a CD? Where are you playing next? Etc.. That doesn't happen much with meteorites. In fact, if even 25 % of women liked meteorites where are they on the list? Sure our wives like them as do our sisters and mothers, but mainly because we do.. Where are all the other women? Just now as I'm emailing this, a female friend called and rebuked me. However, if she really liked them she would have even one in her rock collection. She only likes them because I do.and it is something we can talk about. Where are all the women that like meteorites just because they are meteorites? Lets see, Anne, Maria, and 3 or 4 more! Re: [meteorite-list] 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Own A Meteorite!
Hey Eric, Cool list! However, I do disagree with #5. It is my experience that MOST women have absolutely no interest in meteorites. I wish more did! Heck, maybe they just don't like me? Either way, very few women contact me in regards to meteorites or meteorite hunting. The only women I know that like meteorites are the 4 or 5 on this list. Anyone disagree?? [meteorite-list] 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Own A Meteorite!
Hi all, Figured I'd share a little something with the list... I was writing some promotional material for my meteorite site and it turned into something else I think most of you guys might appreciate and think is a little entertaining. I love meteorites and have a serious addiction just like I think most of you do, and as I was writing this short article it turned into something more than I planned... It's lighthearted, but it's also a little profound... I'll let you decide. I'm even open to suggestions to add or edit the list too. Take a look and let me know what you think. 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Own A Meteorite! http://www.meteoritesusa.com/10-reasons-everyone-should-own-a-meteorite.htm Happy Hunting Eric Wichman www.meteoritesusa.com www.meteoritewatch.com __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Neutron and proton release in large hyper-velocity impacts
Hi Elton, all - Another contender to explain the C14 spikes. That can be added to the existing four: 1)hole in upper atmosphere, 2)interuption of ocean currents, 3)coincident incresase in extra-solar neutrons, and 4)neutron release in impact process. For the comets, I could see how there might be C14. But does the solar wind or interspace contain C14? Two questions on my mind. First do irons contain C14? Second, does anyone have a fine scale chart of real C14 production from about 3,114 BCE on? good hunting all, E.P. Re: [meteorite-list] Neutron and proton release in large hyper-velocity impacts
Hello All, I believe Occum's Razor would suggest that any C14 spikes associated with impacts are more likely from enrichment while the asteroid is in orbit. As was mentioned previously, the C14 enriched region is concentrated at the asteroid's exterior which in turn is the material shed into the atmosphere via ablation. This approach does not require exotic quantum physics-- induced by extreme mechanical physics of cosmic speed impacts, to account for any spike in atmospheric C14 ratios. By virtue of a meteoriod/asteroid's history it is going to arrive bearing high C14 ratios as the decayed carbon ratio is being topped off right up to deep atmosphere penetration--theoretically anyway.
