Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also how does one pronounce enstatite.

Actually I live (alot of the time with my mom) is just about 10 kilometers

Subject: [meteorite-list] GOLD BASIN RESULTS
Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 02:58:26 -0500

Hello Everyone again,

And now the moment we have all been waiting for.(drum roll please.)

THE RESULTS OF THE MARK IS FEELING BETTER GUESS ILL GIVE AWAY A GOLD BASIN
THING..

Frank Chessey nominated Bob Verish. Which is this spiret I could nominate
Donald O'Keefe, who has been leaving around the strewfield waiting for
retirement. Sounds like a way to kill a few years before the pension
checks:-)

Mike Farmer and Bob Verish nominated Skip Wilson. Who has done much for our
interest and seems well liked by all. Who I do not believe I ever met (go
to Denver and Tuscon and try remembering everyone's face that you were not
introduced to).

And who is closest to there collection..(that answered).

1. Mike Farmer - 4 miles - Cat Mountain - with an honorable mention of Udal
Park - 5 miles

2. Matt Morgan. 6 miles - Bear Creek Iron - Co

3. Gordon Trone 8 miles - Williamette

4. Me (Wichita, Kansas) - ~10 miles - Belle Plaine, Kansas

5. Ken Newton (Lehigh Acres, Fl.) - 20 miles - Bonita Springs - Fla,
6. Steve Witt (Lake Station) 35.5 miles - Hamlet

7. Greg Redford (Fairfax, Va.) 100 miles - Stauton, Va.

Including one e-mail sent to the wrong person and fowarded to me and one
DAT file I wouldn't/couldn't open.

And so the winner isJudges..(pause). (pause again)(you know
suspence).

1. SKIP WILSON

2.. Honorable mention goes to fellow IMCA member Gordon Trone for living
closest to the Willamette, the meteorite I would take if I could just one.

I live about 8 miles from where the Willamette was found...same county. I
have a small but expensive, piece of it in my collection. Gordon Trone.

3. Honorable mention also goes to Greg Redford who is the furtherest from
his collection! (again that answered).

4. To fellow IMCA member Jeff Kuyken, who gave my favorite reply.

I've got a few within a 90 odd minute drive.
How's Cranbourne (~30km), Willow Grove (~90km) and Murchison (~150km)? Just
for interest; there's a road in Murchison called Meteorite Street! Jeff
Kuyken.

I tried to get a street maker to produce some Meteorite Street and a Impact
Lane sign for me but he only wanted to to do drives and wouldnt do
otherwise (really).

5. And Finally Dean Bessey. For living in Canada and therefore gets a
handycap. Just think hoq boring this might have been had we all lived in
Canada.

For their efforts, (not the sign-maker) they win consulation prices of a
free Oum Rockba meteorite

If someone would foward Skip's address or if one of the list members that
knows him would like to be a go between please send me your address.

Honorable mention winners should also send me their address to claim their
prizes.

And now a little more serious..

I would like to thank Jim Kreigh and Ingrid Monrad for there field work on
the meteorite and the great dinner they held for us in Tuscon this year.
There was a lot of money put out to make this possible and it was really
enjoyed by all. Where else could I have eat with Robert Hagg and the
Labennes while they are talking about finding moon meteorites. Both where
very pleasant to me and others and we very much appreciate it. Thanks
again!

I would like to note here that Jim Kreigh is still working on mapping the
strewfield. If anyone has cordinates they have taken and have not given
them to him, please e-mail him with that information. If anyone has a very
strange Gold Basin piece. Please e-mail a photo to Robert Vernish or
someone like for their opinon.

Re: [meteorite-list] Classifying meteorites. HELP!

2002-04-13 Thread Jay Haynes

Hi Graham,

I an by far no expert on this but here is what I did a year or so back when i got a few NWA's. Generally try to find as many pictures of slices or interiors of meteorites as you can find (NWA slices usually are the best for ID'ing similiar meteorites like you have) And really just try and compare them to the picture of one that is already classified. Your might not be right on but you probably could have a good idea of what you have. The only way to be really sure would be to take a small piece (bout the size of a fingernail) and send it off to a university or museum and they could ID it there for sure. I dont know if the Geological Survery of Canada does it seeing they are only really interestred in Canadian meteorites.

Hello list,
I haven't posted in a while, I have been busy with school work and I
just
got my report card (81% in physics :). I just got a whole bunch of
unidentified meteorites from Northwest Africa that were sent to me
by Simon
de Boer (Thanks again Simon :) and I want to try classifying them. I
need
suggestions/tips/general rules about how to identify them. I am
pretty sure
they are all ordinary chondrites, they all have metal flake and
chondrules
except for a few badly weathered ones. Are there any keys for
meteorites
like there are for identifying insects and plants? Many of them
don't look
like any of the ones in my collection and photos on the internet
don't show
the fine details so I really have nothing to compare them to. I have
some
guesses on some of them but I would rather go about this
scientifically. One
of them has a few giant chondrules or inclusions in it. And one has
so much
metal in it it almost looks like a mesosiderite but with chondrules.
A few
of them have armoured chondrules, those are really neat. Any
information
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Philip and All,

Now we're cooking with gas! The mp3 files are really the way to go. Imagine
the database with native speakers pronouncing the meteorite names for all
the world to hear with just a mouse click. Soon, as we drive across country,
we can take the bird call CD out and pop in one to practice our meteorite
names, for hours on end!

If we divide the workload, we can pull this off faster than the human genome
project! I'll handle all the meteorites from Montana and Idaho since most
people on this planet have accents, but we here in this area of the US have
none.

This is exciting. I can almost hear the hours upon hours of Texan drawl
rattling off 280 or so meteorite names before handing off to Kansas! Oooo,
can't you just hear the native southern Californian's bubble off meteorite
names in beach-talk or valley-girlese. Cool meteorite names are not just for
the French anymore!

Cheers,

Martin

French meteorite names I dont really have problem with (took french for almost 8 years). Speaking of which, i have heart many people refer to the St. Roberts meteorite by saying well how it looks. You actually have to put the french accent on it and say it as St. Ro-bear. Quebec is funny that way. :-)

Generally I am tyring to make it on the level of people who have a basic knowledge in physics, chemistry mineralology/geology. I am working on getting the actual presentation sheets made up as we speak so I will have a few done for tonight. Any comments would be gtreatly appreciated.Clear Skies Happy Hunting,

Hi all. Thanks to Harlan I'm upgrading my slice of Gao from 1.16g to 10g

which means I've got an extra slice of Gao now. I could sell or trade it

but that just doesn't seem right considering why I will soon have two slices

so for anyone who can identify the song that these lyrics come from gets my

old piece. You also have to ID the band that sings it and what album its

off of. The reason I chose this song is it just happens to be what I'm

listening to right now and its by one of my favorite bands who is no longer

together. Anyways, free Gao slice with free shipping to whoever can guess

the song.

If he was from Venus

Would he feed us with a spoon?

If he was from Mars, wouldn't that be cool?

Standing right on campus

Would he stamp us in a file?

Hangin' down in Memphis all the while.

(chorus:)

Children by the million

Sing for Alex Chilton

When he comes 'round

They sing "I'm in love

What's that song?

I'm in love with that song."

Cerebral rape and pillage

In a village of his choice.

Invisible man who can sing

In a visible voice.

Feeling like a hundred bucks

Exchanging good lucks face to face

Checkin' his stash by the trash

At St. Mark's place.

(chorus)

I never travel far

Without a little Big Star

Runnin' 'round the house

Mickey Mouse and the Tarot cards.

Falling asleep with a flop pop video on.

If he was from Venus

Would he meet us on the moon?

If he died in Memphis, wouldn't that be cool?

(chorus)

[meteorite-list] Sweet Book!

2002-03-28 Thread Jay Haynes
Hi List,

I just got a book in from the astronomy book club called Planetary Sciences by Imke de Pater and Jack J.Lissauer.
This book is amazing! (cant wait to get the enccyclopedia of meteorite soon). From the looks of it, the book is basically a planetary sciences textbook. If any of you come across it I really reccomend gettting it. It also has quite a large seciton on meteorites.
Take Care,

Speaking of photographing celestial objects I been doing alot of experimenting with a Kodak Dc280 digital camera and my scopeat my uncles house. I will make a website during the week and post some of the best images. I am most proud of the ones I did of the Dec 25, 2000 partial solar eclipse but I also got some excellant pictures of the moon, sun, venus, mars jupiter that I did.Clear Skies Happy Hunting,

Hello List,
Now that another comet is offering us the opportunity to take some
pictures, I thought I'd show you a couple of images I took of the
Hale-Bopp
comet back in March 1997.

Over the years, I've sold a lot of these prints so I know many of
you have
already seen these images. I've posted them now for those of you
that are
new to the list or have an interest in photographing celestial
objects.

[meteorite-list] meteorite poster

2002-03-22 Thread Jay Haynes

Hi List,

I'm afraid I cannot take anymore requests for the posters at this current time as I just spent close to $70 on shipping which is more then half of my current paycheckand still need a bit of cash to get meteorites for my April 18th talk. If you did not get to me in time do not worry as I have still over 100 posters and will start taking requests again in around 2 weeks on my next payday.Clear Skies Happy Hunting,
