A friend of mine who lives in Germany was given this and was told it was a
meteorite.

I told him I didn't recognize it as a meteorite bit I figured I would post
here just to be sure.

Does anyone know what this is?

How about doing a Nickel test on it? It looks very similar to galena to me,
but the long bands of metal tell me that it isn't galena.

Yeah there's no mistaking Galena when you see it. The way it fractures and the
color is always a dead give away. Here's a link that explains it some, take
note of the density-

Before anyone falls on their sword over this specimen, note
the gas channel/tube in the middle-- scraggy as it is, even
Na tan isn't worm eaten!

It was my observation that, while many folks submitted lots
of candidates which I enjoyed looking over, there were many
subtle distinctions and outright differences that
didn't match. The specimen "resembled" most
of them but on closer viewing didn't "match"
any of them. The most common feature was metallic luster
but twasn't the same metallic luster on any of the
photos.

Not trying to be pedantic but many times it is better to
look for the differences in all the features(e.g. fracture,
texture, crystal faces, etc.) It the specimens match there
will be none.

I don't have a photo of metallic silicon handy but it
too has subtle surface differences: it has a convex,
undulating, fracture vs the flat banded fractures this
specimen shows.

Up to this point, the gas channel most certainly points to
a smelting product(aka slag or bad run) and, I would be
comfortable saying that I know what it is not. The great
part about all the photo sharing is we now have many more
materials to compare when we are trying to identify a given
specimen. Plus I wouldn't have totally blown that
mesosiderite photo a few months back had I looked closer.

Thanks Bunches,
Elton

The Nantans I've seen (like the one you mention) don't have such

David - Is yours attracted to a magnet? Silica Metal is not... so if his

Looks like Silica Metal. I have something like that myself. Man made

I´ve seen a lot of weathered rocks like this in Namibia (mostly
lime-stones). But I wouldn´t expect this sort of weathering in France. To
check it out put a little drop of acid (HCl 10% or less) on the surface.
Make sure, that there is no dirt on the surface of the rock (could contain
lime). If you see bubbles, it´s limestone. Meteorites and HCl would´t show a

Separate from this stone being no meteorite,
the mentioned local newspaper article referred to, describes probably the
fall of Zaklodzie (30 miles away from Lublin) in the night of April 21 in
1897 - bright bolide, longlasting thunders, trembling windows & ground, just
in that area, where later the single stone of Zaklodzie was found.
(Btw: I still have budget pieces of this rare enstatite achondrite, small
slices, most polished, 0.8-2 grams - 50$ per gram, which is very affordable
for Zaklodzie of that size, compare).

Buckleboo!

Re: [meteorite-list] Is this a meteorite or just a wierd rock? foundary plug

2003-12-11 Thread E. L. Jones

Hello David,

For all my experience in researching old mines and old furnaces, it is
trough plug from a foundry operation.

Some foundries,  especially older ones that didn't have overhead cranes
and large crucibles have channels in the floor from the furnace to a
bank(tree) of molds.  The molten metal was released into any of several
brick, sand, or clay-lined channels at the the "tapping hearth" and
flowed out into the castting floor/ house/ room to the ingot molds
(pigs)*. Slag was drawn off first. Not to be confused with furnice
plugs or taps which were ceramic clay and broken to release the molten
slag or metal, these plugs stemmed from an overflow in the channel and
had to be cleared when cooled. If they "graded in" they went back into
the next charge if they "graded out" they were tossed or sold to
shipping lines to be used as ballast on ships. This is about the right
width and shape in cross section for a typical channel although it
could have been from a pig which graded out.  The top to bottom zoning
suggests a plug.

The reason it looks like a loaf of bread on top is that metal tends to
be highly cohesive and has a convex(rounded) meniscus. In case anyone
ever runs across metal "cow patties"-- these are another foundry
artifact and are splash forms which actually splattered when being
poured. I don't remember what they were nicknamed. I frequently find
them in old railroad right of ways.

Your item is possibly high in zinc, as there is little oxidation,
and/or "pot metal", which is a low
grade assemblage of whatever came into the reclamation pile that month,
or slag residue. Slag is a generic term but usually contains more
silica/
glass than metal-usually no free metal.  This section appears to be
more metal than
slag/glass.

99% certain it is not  a meteorite and it would take a long time to
point out all the reason's why.  Keep looking at photos enough and it
will make more sense.   If you read the descriptions now in use as to
what is or isn't a meteorite just about anything can "look" like a
meteorite.  At least photos can help screen some items.

Regards,
Elton
*  Tradition says the the term "pig" came from the arrangement of the
ingot molds off the channel,  which reminded the smelters of a sow pig
nursing a litter and is the origin of the term "pig iron".

David,

Get a coffee cup out that has a white, unglazed mating ring on the bottom. Rub the rock vigorously along the ring (or vice versa may be easier) and check the color of the streak left by the rock; it is one of the geologist's standard field tests and is called, oddly enough, the streak of the mineral tested. One of the most common meteorwrongs is hematite which has a reddish-brown streak along with magnetite with its' black streak. Meteorites almost universally (highly weathered ones may leave a faint one) leave no streak at all. I recently got hornswaggled by a hydrothermal deposit of hematite with accessory magnetite and silicates mixed in for good measure. Another one of hematite's main properties is its weak magnetic signature, but this stuff was rather strong magnetically, a property lent by the magnetite. I'd be willing to bet your rock will streak reddish and the weak magnet signature will tell you hematite has been found, but
I'm no expert so be sure to find one if there's a question. Good luck and keep searching!Mark Jackson

Thanks for your help everyone.. Here are the answers to various questions I
received. Looks like the going opinion is that is just a rock though.

Q: Does yours streak black? (And I mean REALLY black.)
A: Does not streak at all. Very hard rock.

Q: See if you can estimate its density.
A: Not sure how to estimate a density but it is one of the densest I have
come across.

Q: My first guess is some sort of slag, but it could be natural too.
A: Definitely not man-made, this was in the middle of nowhere (discovered it
while hunting). There are few towns in that part of the state and the only
industry I am aware of is cattle.

Q: Any rail road with in 10 miles?
A: Nope

Q: That face looks like zinc or lead.
A: Don't know a the qualities of zinc but I can say for certain it is not
lead.

What do you think?

Dear David;
My guess is slag due to the crystalline structure on the end. Being
lightly attracted to a magnet rules out magnetite that would also be on
the short list. Any rail road with in 10 miles?

That's pretty neat. I just wonder why it has such sharp features on it's face
after lieing out in the weather. That face looks like zinc or lead. Please
cut me some slack! I hazard a guess and reveal my ignorance only to avoid
being labeled as a lurker,

Thanks,

[meteorite-list] Is this a meteorite?

2002-05-10 Thread Rafael Blando Torres

Hello List, do I have a meteorite?...Its bluish to black, its strongly
attracted to a magnet and it seems to have flow lines and thumbprints, also
it has rounded edges, but Im not sure, any suggestions?: Here is the link

(*Note: There is a mistake in the photos. The first one is the suspected
one, and the other is a Sikhote-Alin, sorry)

*Note: The suspected flow lines appear in the photo

Also the story of how I got it its there. The problem is that I dont want to
cut it, because its small and I want it complete.

Thanks all¡¡¡

My guess, a classic example of hemitite, var. mammary.

One of the most common meteorwrongs. Usually not magnetic in the least.

[meteorite-list] Is this a meteorite????

2002-02-18 Thread Rick Nowak

This was found in Wyandot County Ohio in May of 2001
and was sent to me by a John Ward.
The stone in question has NO magnet attraction. Due to
it’s oriented shape color and texture of other
meteorites I have seen I did not want to declare this
not a meteorite when in fact it could well be. Each
side of this stone is very smooth including the front
that has a nipple then a ring around the base of the
nipple.Their are no sharp cuts etc. The stone is no
bigger than a quarter yet weighs more than it should
for it’s size. He found the stone buried with ¾ of
it’s mass in the ground and just the end sticking out.
The problem is if I break this thing up I would
destroy it’s unique beauty. Since their would be no
metal inside a nickel test would be inclusive. If
anyone has any idea what this could be or where it can
be sent for testing let me know.Image avaible at
