[meteorite-list] What is it?

2011-08-29 Thread Walter L. Newton
Found this little 4.7 gram "pebble" among a parcel of unclassified NWA
meteorites I purchase a few years ago from Morocco. Its' non-magnetic and
when I cut it open, this is what was inside. I realize that a picture is not
the final determination on what a stone is or isn't, but, any educated
guesses.

The darkness could be impact melt or close to it (High shock). Must be
an OC with the large chondrule showing. I have a slice of NWA4588 which
is an L5-S5

with a matrix that looks bang on to yours.

2005-06-15 Thread Charles Viau
Hi List.

Checkout this great meteorwrong page. - See Item #34, terrestrial basalt
conglomerate. Cut that and polish it, and it would probably look better than
the slab this idiot has. It even looks like there is sulfur in his slab,
and if you look close, there are holes, or vesicles in the matrix. That
would mean a slice of pig iron (steel smelting slag), would it not?

#17 is also a ringer for another rock this fraud has on another auction.

I have had email discussions with him before when he was selling moon rocks
he found in his yard This dude is definitely 28 days short of a full
month. He cannot spell, and his conversations are not legible let him
pass in the wind.

Slow down Dave,

I didn't say it is a winner; I just don't know what
it is. I can't seem to get the picture back up (I
think the auction has been cancelled), but it looked
to me like all the phases were very coarsely
crystalline. In this case, metal or no metal, it
couldn't be a basalt (which is by definition aphanitic
except for possible phenocrysts).

With slower crystallization, you can get gabbros and
other coarsely crystalline ultramafics with segregated
sulfides, but once again, the rapid crystallization
leading to basalt formation has little chance to
segregate anything beyond micro-blebs of sulfide.

I can't believe it could be a basalt.

Re: [meteorite-list] What is It?

2005-06-15 Thread ken newton

Larry, Dave and List,
Greg Baumgartner (4263greg) has an ebay history of selling rocks as
meteorites. He sold his 'Meteorite Eartharight Stones' on ebay back in
March. You may remember, he described the stones as meteoritic and
terrestrial. He then progressed to the hard-core fakes: "Meteorites
Stony Iron Pallasite Californian#1" Series and the " Stoney iron
meteorite, Metal Olivine Mix " Series. These auctions prompted no
little discussion.

The price on his current item (a slice - no weight given) has dropped
from $100,000 to $10,000. Is it real? Mr. Baumgartner says it is, but
that is what he said about all his other auctions. If it is real, it is
a shame that it came to be in the possession of a dishonest seller who
lacks the foresight to have it properly tested.

but for all practical purposes, most of the iron is
present in silicate phases. This thing isn't a
basalt. I don't have any better ideas. I think it
might be what the seller claims it to be

Dave, List,

I must've missed that thread. There certainly seems to be a hint of
crackpotedness for sure! The rock is very interesting however, I've
never seen anything like it before. Do you have any pic's Dave?

Thanks,

I believe that a week ago we determined this to be a crackpot. Iron
rich olivine basalt is my blind guess at what it may be. I have some

Re: [meteorite-list] What is it??

2005-04-10 Thread Jason Utas
Hello All,
A few years ago I traveled to Meteor Crater with my father and older
brother. While we were there we did stop a few (~5-10) miles from the
crater, on public land near the highway. While there we found an
excellent ammonite, en matrix and a couple of small impactite
specimens. They are exactly as Nininger described them (on page 119
of "Arizona's Meteorite Crater." They are nearly opaque and the
interior is slightly lighter in color than a dark green bottle, the
exterior surface exhibiting a grey/black crust of fused sand (the
desert varnished one is grey, the formerly buried one is still black).
While I was working at the UCLA meteoritics lab the next summer I took
one up to get it set in epoxy and cut. The cut surface revealed a
small number of tiny shiny flecks of metal. If there's anyone out
there willing to make a thin section of it for me, please contact me
-- as long as it's not too expensive I should be able to afford it.
It's already prepared for grinding -- I made a pretty thin parallel
slice. If I have a thin section made I can get it looked at by some
of the folks up at UCLA with some seriously high tech equipment and
they should be able to define its origin. I can give pictures to
anyone who wants them -- I have no idea how to put pictures on a site,
or a site to put them on for that matter.
Jan's specimen could be impactite, however perfectly clear glass would
point to a removal of all (or nearly all) impurities before smelting
suggesting that it is a man-made artifact. Also, definition of "flow
lines" on the surface would have to have been caused by etching from
acid from the ground -- a piece of silica would never survive for that
long unchanged on the surface of the desert. Most ~5 year old bottles
in the Mojave show minor pitting due to sandblasting. A piece of
glass that old and in such good condition would have to have been
buried, and therefor exposed to acids in the ground. Many
indochinites display etching that did eat away at slightly less
resistant internal layers, creating the illusion of flow lines when in
fact the internal structure is what is really visible. So...it is
possible that Jan's piece of glass is in fact an impactite, however,
its color and complete transparency point towards a man-made form of
creation.
Regards,
Jason

Re: [meteorite-list] What is it??

2005-04-10 Thread Graham Christensen
I'm pretty sure I have some of this meteor crater glass. A friend of mine
visited the crater a couple years ago and he found a brown bubbly rock with
small white chunks in it that weakly sticks to a magnet. Mark Bostick sent
me a piece of monturaqui impactite to compare and they do seem quite similar
except that the meteor crater specimen has smaller bubbles and isn't as
shiny.

There's a picture of it here:

Elton noted: "Actually folks..there IS a glass impactite found at Meteor
Crater. I have read the research long ago but not sure Iremember what it

You are correct Elton, but the impactite looks like Monturique
impactitewhich is also glass. when you melt just about any two or
more rocks together you get glass. Not window glass, but glass.

Michael is correct on it being burned trash. This was a bunch of it on
the side of the storage hill a couple of years ago.

It's a nice souvenir whatever it is. Maybe a campfire remnant from the
