[MMouse]: RE: epic message board
yeah i have an opinion that you're a snob tyler
[MMouse]: friendly reminder to digest people
Please digest people when you reply to messages do not include the original message because we end up getting the last digest in addition to whatever you have to say... Not a big deal, but a little irritating especially for those of us who use linux to read their mail. I have to hold down the down key for a little while on my slow computer in order to get to the messages when somebody includes an entire digest. Thanks Tyler
[MMouse]: Re: bright eyes
Bright Eyes is the most fantastic songwriter of this year. It's like acoustic guitar with lots of other instruments. REally delicate lyrics and then suddenly wildly emotional surges of pure beauty... His voice is creepy as hell, it sounds like he's always shivering. I consider him a dirtier, more important version of Belle and Sebastian. Does this help? Tyler
[MMouse]: indie cred / what to buy
I'm sick of hearing about indie cred. Denying your indie cred must get your more indie cred or something. I guess you're not indie unless you deny being indie. Um what to buy. Must buys (in my opinion)... Bright Eyes "Every day and every night"- I know people have already suggested this one but I think it is absolutely the best album of 1999. The songwriting is amazing... Sparklehorse "Good morning spider"- I just bought this last Thursday. I know it's a little old but it is an amazing album. Wilco "Summerteeth"- My alternate best of 1999. Dirty Three "Whatever you love, you are"- Track three, "I Offered It up to the Stars & The Night..." is without a doubt their most amazing piece of work to date. Kevin Drumm "Comedy"- Minimalism. Low "The curtain hits the cast"- Low is a grat band. Very simple. The perfect answer to loud rock bands. Spoon "Telephono"- Dunno what to say. Very good rock and roll. Aloha "That's your fire"- I love these guys. They're from Cleveland like me and I think they're fantastic. Tyler
[MMouse]: re: off topic posts
Tight ass mailing lists snobs are worse than tight ass RepublicansMmkay? Tyler
[MMouse]: off topic posts
Mailing lists are boring. Off topic posts are boring. People who write a lot of posts to mailing list are boring. Tyler
[MMouse]: re: philly rawk / "indier than thou"
God this list seems to be losing years and braincells quite quickly. Tyler
[MMouse]: re: califone
> every song sounds the same Again I would submit that you're not listening hard enough. In my experience when someone says this about a musician or group of musicians it is because the person is not familiar with the genre of music. I know that its true with me. For a long time I thought that all hip-hop music sounded the same but now I realize that my prejudice against hip-hop was just my own unfamiliarity with the music. It might also have to do with the fact that Califone's music is more about subtlety than Modest Mouse's music is. Tyler
[MMouse]: califone
Hmm.. Dunno how to say this exactly, but I guess this goes out to all of those people who are dissing Califone. Someone's probably said this before me, but I'll pretend like I just made it up...boredom is a sign of not listening or looking hard enough. When music becomes completely about energy I often lose interest. Anyways, just wanted to throw my support in for Califone. I happen to think they're creating some of the most original, modern music out there. Tyler
[MMouse]: re: modest mouse/cleveland
um, actually like i said, i think i forgot a couple and i didn't know a few... so that makes about 15 in all. considering they played for about two hours i thought it was a damn fine show. tyler
[MMouse]: modestmouse, 5/17 cleveland
great modest mouse show. they seemed a lot more rehearsed than on past tours. a few surprises on the setlist...six parts seven got kicked off the bill because the "agora ballroom" doesn't "book local bands". bullshit. they added some other guitar/bass duo that was like my bloody valentine meets low. kinda boring actually i thought. califone, of course, was wonderful. i don't know if i forgot anything on this or not, i didn't know a couple not really in order here polar opposites breakthrough grey ice water third planet doin' the cockroach neverending math equation cowboy dan trailer trash custom concern tundra/desert
[MMouse]: re: modestmouse in cleveland/ticketmaster
I doubt Modest Mouse will sell out the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland. Guided by Voices didn't sell it out this past December (on a Friday night no less). Anyways, if you want to be sure go ahead and order from Ticketmaster. As long as you do that within a day before I think you'll be fine. They'll put it on will-call. You'll just have to show your credit card and ID at the door I think. Mine is in the mail...I'm happy. I'm psyched to see them. Saw them while college tripping in Seattle at RKCNDY a few months before it closed. Great show. Got in for free too because I was from Ohio. I guess they thought that was pretty cool or something because it's in a Modest Mouse song. Fvckclevo, if you want to meet up at the show that's cool. I dunno what shirt I'll wear or stuff like that. I have brown curly hair, funny eyebrows. I'm skinny white and tall. Hmm, sound like every other indie rocker on the list. OK well whatever email me back we can figure something out. Say meet at the bar at 10:32 or something. Ha! Tyler
[MMouse]: selling out
Dunno if I buy this whole "We had to wash dishes or sign to a major label" thing. Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and others live off success as indie rock stars and don't have to work day jobs. They'd make a hell of a lot in royalties if they stayed with Up or some other big indie rock label like Matador, Sub Pop, etc. Anyways, you might be interested in this Steve Albini article about major lables. It's pretty informative, and accurate, too, it seems. http://www.atlantic-satellite.com/major_la.htm Tyler Drosdeck
[MMouse]: offtopic/guided by voices/earplugs
went to an amazing guided by voices show last night at oberlin. ted leo and the holy childhood opened up. both are pretty interesting. ted leo is pretty funny. if you get a chance to go see ted play you should check him out. he uses a reel to reel tape player as his backing band. he writes very cool pop songs though...kinda like if lou barlow was cool and was a solo artist and wrote better lyrics. holy childhood were interesting, too...like rolling stones with a bit more punk rock. ted leo's brother is the frontman (i think)..he looks a bit like mick jagger. guided by voices were fantastic. they promised to play until security kicked them off. their set list was two whole pages, must have been about 50 songs. they almost made it but the lights turned on at 1:30, about 8 songs from finishing. they played "i am a scientist" and called it a night. i got three rolls of film shot, but my ears fucking hurt like crazy. this brings me to my question which is what kind of earplugs should i get? i dont know anything about them really. i just bought six foam pairs at the drugstore today. they say they bring audio down to 29db. is this decent? should i invest in stronger ones? ok thats it thanks tyler
[MMouse]: Re: off topic: slacker
I agree that it's one of the best films I've seen from the 90's...I don't think that the people are "random." While there is no narrative plot which follows a particular path I would defintely say that the transitions are the movie are deliberate (as opposed to random). Tyler
[MMouse]: re: modest mouse in cleveland
At the Agora Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio Modest Mouse will be playing with Califone from Chicago and the Six Parts Seven from Kent. I don't know too much about Califone only that my friend's brother (ex- Red Red Meat, currently in Those Bastard Souls) is now their bassist. The Six Parts Seven are a great instrumental group from Kent, Ohio. Sort of like Tristeza with a (to my mind) more organic feel. I'm pumped. Tyler
[MMouse]: re: t-shirt giveaway
Why dontcha back that azz up. Tyler
[MMouse]: t-shirt giveaway
> pardon my asking, but what the hell is "wrong on s many levels" > about a t-shirt giveaway? Maybe you should read that little blurb again. Thank God Modest Mouse finally made it out of the trailer park... Tyler
[MMouse]: Re: emo
> and i hate to burst your bubble, but there are no "emo" bands on either > jade tree or polyvinyl records. never were. that genre died in 1995 when > portraits of past broke up. Hahahahahahahaha... I'm sorryhuh? Aloha is great. Everything else on Polyvinyl is uninteresting to me. I find nothing on Jade Tree of any interest. Definetely Emo-core though. Tyler
[MMouse]: Re: records to watch for
Yeah, Michael (the guitar player) from lovesick is my cousin. He lives in Ann Arbor, I live in Cleveland. Tyler
Re: [MMouse]: records to watch for
Re: Southpacific "Constance" Yes, that is a great record. I got it back in December and played it two weeks straight. It's different than Tristeza, though. Tristeza is a lot more jangly and melodic. Southpacific uses drone guitar stuff with bits of melody coupled with a bouncy rhythm section. Really cool. Turnbuckle has some other good stuff out, too. If you're into Tristeza, though, you might want to check out The Six Parts Seven from Kent, Ohio. They have a record out on Donut Friends Records which is run by the drummer from Harriet the Spy. The Six Parts Seven are more like Tristeza than Southpacific is. There is at least one MP3 track of The Six Parts Seven on Epitonic (www.epitonic.com), so you should check that out. One record that I'm really looking forward, too is the new Aloha record. In my mind they're the only decent thing on Polyvinyl. Aloha plays a lot here in Cleveland. They're opening for Tristeza this Sunday which should be an awesome show. It's cool jazzy, Tortiose/Tristeza-like instrumentation with a bit of emo-ish vocals. They use vibraphones, keyboards, other stuff. Kind of prog-rock styled stuff. Certainly the best thing in Cleveland. Their record comes out in May, but I heard they have 100 of them now. If you ask real nice they might give you one. (www.insomniaville.com/aloha) Tyler
