Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation
an oldie but goodie strategy is to have kids read their piece's from the end backwards. So read what they think is the last sentence. use a slash or whatever but does it make sense the way you read it? then the next to the last sentence. Of course they won't know exactly where the sentence starts anymore than where it ends but it is experimenting till they get it as they want it. This breaks up that ongoing flow of meaning and kind of focuses their understanding on JUST the sentence. I think we lose sight of the fact that it is just not that easy to do! To wit, I work on it all the way thru graduate students. Clauses of all kinds have subjects and verbs so that determination alone doesn't do the trick. So I try to help the kids see they are the "owners" of their writing and need to work with it till it communicates clearly what they want. AND unless they actually have some ownership, none of this works very well. So it cannot all be "assignments." I read a great great chapter in a book/article that I wish I could find now. But it was a plea that knowing where to put periods, e.g. a complete thought or idea, is a HUGE Sally On Dec 8, 2012, at 1:58 PM, evelia cadet wrote: > My 4th grade students are not ending their sentences with a period. Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation
I've taught first and second grade. Most students, if they read what they wrote out loud to someone else, and you teach them to listen where they pause and their voice goes down, they can get it. You have to model it first. On Sat, Dec 8, 2012 at 3:58 PM, evelia cadet wrote: > My 4th grade students are not ending their sentences with a period. It's > like they don't know when a sentence ends. Real aloud Punctuation Takes a Vacation. Model how to insert punctuation correctly on an overhead projector or document camera with a colorful marker (preferably not red). When it's time for a period, have them make put out their pointer finger like they are popping a bubble and have them say "pop". It is auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Eventually, give them "thinking markers" - flair pens for them to insert their punctuation... let the writing begin!Lori > From: cadeteve...@hotmail.com > Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2012 15:58:57 -0600 > To: mosaic@literacyworkshop.org > Subject: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation > > My 4th grade students are not ending their sentences with a period. Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation
Using a rubric for them to self check their drafts and then have peer editing also. Writing conferences are a way for them to learn. When my first graders forgot their punctuation, I would have them fix it while they were in a writing conference with me. Maybe you could do a mini lesson with a paragraph with no periods and have them put them in as a whole group. You could go on a detective missing periods hunt and make it a competition. I'm sure 4th grade would love that! Give them many opportunities for free writing, such as journals even if it is for homework and then have them fix each others work. Remind them true writing is a process. -Original Message- From: Lori D To: mosaic Sent: Sat, Dec 8, 2012 8:33 pm Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation Real aloud Punctuation Takes a Vacation. Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation
I highly recommend doing a Punctuation Study a la Katie Wood Ray. I have used it with all ages and have had the best results of anything else I have ever tried. The students need to actually experience why punctuation is so important. They need to see that the author (them) really has an obligation to show the reader exactly how to read the text infront of them. Only then do they take charge of their own writing. Re: [MOSAIC] Writing Punctuation
Hi from Australia! We stole a fabulous idea from the UK - 'Kung Fu Punctuation'. Our Years 2- 4 'Kung Fu' their work and they love it. It's kinaesthetic and a lot of fun. The Punctuation Pyramids work as reminders for the children of the types of punctuation available to them. It's not for every teacher, you have to be open to being a little bit silly with your students. Our Year 2 teacher puts on her Kung Fu robe, plays a snippet of 'Kung Fu Fighting' and the whole class practices punctuating a paragraph using their Kung Fu moves... and yes, it does translate into their writing. There are a few different versions around, we allowed our students to come up with the moves to suit each punctuation mark. Google it if you're interested, there's quite a bit out there on the net.
