[mou-net] Evening Grosbeaks still in Duluth
For the seventh morning in a row, I've awakened to Evening Grosbeaks calling in my yard in Duluth (email me back channel if you want the address). The group, which seems to be made up of three or four families, has about 20 birds now. They're only occasionally in my feeders--they're spending a lot of time in the box elders, maples, cherry trees, raspberries, my bird bath, and my neighbor's little backyard pond. A few of the young are still begging for food, but the adults seem only to be feeding them up in the box elders, so I only have one pretty poor photo of that. I've got photos and a couple of videos on my flickr photostream here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lauraerickson/sets/72157627266314931/ -- Laura Erickson Duluth, MN For the love, understanding, and protection of birds There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds. [mou-net] Ruffed Grouse/Lark Sparrows--Goodhue Co.
Hi All-- While biking the Cannon Valley Trail in Goodhue Co. yesterday, Erika discovered and I photographed a Ruffed Grouse. The bird was along the Cannon River about two miles west of Welsh Station (just west of two benches overlooking the river). The photographs and a blog discussion are at http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com We also saw several Lark Sparrows near mile post 5. We also saw them at the same location last week, when we saw four or five. Last week they gave the impression of being a family group, with what may have been fully-grown young hopping and closely following what may have been adults. On both occasions, the birds flew up from the busy bike trail, and have not to date allowed really close approach. [mou-net] FW: Re: [BIRDBAND] Strange growth on a crow bill
Hey everyone - I got the note below from Richard Guthrie in New York and I don't have an answer for him. Does anybody out there know of a banding group from Minnesota that works in Belize? But I'm wondering if you know what the group from Minnesota that bands in Belize is, and who a contact person is. If our schedules can mesh, I'd like to join up with them down there. [mou-net] Fw: Juvie songbirds
Gotta share what I've seen some young birds do within the past couple of weeks. A young robin, standing on a deck railing JUMPING 18 inches to reach some suet. Looks like he's doing a one, and a two, and a three, JUMP! Then there was the young wren yesterday. Exploring my deck. Then plopping down on the railing (like he's still in the nest) watching all the Big Boys at the other feeders. Back and forth between the Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Nut-hatches, Finches and Catbirds. (It's been busy at my feeders) Geez, he was cute. Sandy Kuder Coon Rapids Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Best bird seen while not birding
Back when I lived in Wisconsin I was attempting to have a Hey birders, Back when I lived in Wisconsin I was attempting to have a day of birding at Horicon Marsh to celebrate my birthday. About 30 minutes north of the Milwaukee suburbs my parents' car went dysfunctional and I had to wake up my mom at 6:30am (I was younger back then) to have her come up and rescue me. I was horribly depressed to go from day at Horicon Marsh to filling the birdfeeders at home...until a Carolina Wren came to the feeder I had just filled. That was a state bird. On my honeymoon in Hawaii I crossed the line that exists for all families where one person is a birder and the spouse is definitely not. My wife was horribly upset at the amount of attention and time the birds were garnering compared to the new bride and had just deservedly chewed me out...I didn't dare look at a bird at that moment (so I know I wasn't birding) when an Erckel's Francolin ran in front of our rental car. I didn't tell her about that lifer until we got back to Wisconsin. How hard is it to see a lifer and not celebrate? Happy birding! Chad Heins Mankato P.S. I just heard secondhand report of a possible Prairie Falcon at the sod farms west of Mapleton (corner of CR21 and CR14). But ask the animals and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? --Job 12:7, 9 Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Chukar
As I was retrieving my AM paper here in beautiful downtown Plymouth, I saw something plump on the curb further down the street, maybe an injured baby owl. Since it was too far away to get a good naked eye look, I ran back to the house to get my binocs. When I got my glass on it, I discovered it was a Chukar strolling across my yard. Before I could get my camera, it ran into the tall grass and I have not seen it since. My neighbor, a hunter, is not aware of any game farms around here. Perhaps one of the gun clubs in the area had a shoot. Anyway, entertainment while fetching my paper. [mou-net] Kathio State Park
Birded Kathio (Mille Lacs County) this morning - 10 warbler species (14-15 nest) - Golden-winged everywhere - surprised by Lawrence's backcross male in one group - also found a little north of normal Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. [mou-net] Warblers
Hi All, I amback in Minnesota for 2 weeks after working out on the farallon Islands. It was great birding out there, bu7t now I am in search of my favorite migrant birds: the Eastern Warblers! Does anyone have any places near the Twin Cities where one could find some of these? I have been to bass Pond and enjoyed looks at Yellow, American Redstarts and Common Yellowthroats, but I am hoping to find my nemesis bird, the blackburnian Warbler among others. Thanks for any tips. [mou-net] Shorebird location in Big Stone Co.
I just got this information about a shorebird location in Big Stone Co. from Curt Vacek; wildlife supervisor with the MN DNR. I came across another nice shorebird area - NE ¼ Sec 24 Big Stone Township. Flooded ag land on ¼ mile south of CR 10, on west side of 700th ave. Can't miss it right off the side of the road - very nice viewing. I'm guessing 75-100 shorebirds. I didn't glass them all, but what I saw included yellow legs, pecs, solitary, semi-sand, killdeer, least and phalaropes. [mou-net] Common Gallinules and Least Bitterns, Nicollet County
This evening Don Scheese and I went canoeing on Swan Lake and enjoyed a gorgeous outing on the water. Putting the canoe in the water on the northeast side of the lake at the public boat access, we almost immediately heard the vocalizations of a Common Gallinule (formerly Common Moorhen) on the east side of the channel. Out on the lake, we observed no less than ten Least Bitterns, 6 of which we saw and 4 more that we heard; most of the ones we saw were observed in islands of sparse cattails in the middle of the water (separated from the contiguous denser marshland on the periphery of the lake). Upon our return to the boat launch, a Common Gallinule was actually visible for a short period of time on the east side of the channel as we approached. Within a minute, the vocalizations of a Common Gallinule were heard again but farther to the south of us, leading me to believe there at least two birds present. It might be possible to see or hear these birds from the public boat launch without getting into the water. There was also a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling from somewhere on one of the large wooded islands in the northeast part of the lake south of the boat launch, and many Western, Red-necked, and Eared Grebes scattered across the open water.
