[mou-net] Nelson's Sparrows, Ramsey County
There are at least two and probably a couple more Nelson's Sparrows foraging in the reeds at the public beach on the northwest side of White Bear Lake. The birds are staying pretty well concealed in the vegetation close to the water but occasionally pop out on the shoreline for brief views. From the parking lot walk east onto the beach and start looking once you're in the reeds. [mou-net] MBW update
Just a brief note that the MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.com) has been updated today, September 13, and includes the current registration status of the MBWeekends and MBWeeks remaining in the 2012-13 season. While the last two MBWeekends of the season are already filled, you'll see that three others in September and October still have vacancies; in addition, a vacancy recently opened up on the February 2013 South Texas MBWeek. Elsewhere on the website, you'll find an updated set of corrections and additions for A Birder's Guide to Minnesota. The 2013-14 MBW schedule will be published in November; in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or questions. Thanks. Kim R Eckert ecker...@gmail.com http://www.mbwbirds.com Note: This is the 27th season of MBWs, which are offered in association with the MOU (we were originally known as MOU Birding Weekends). The MOU annually receives a portion of MBW receipts in return for these postings of trip reports and updates on mou-net. [mou-net] Lake Vadnais
The road through Lake Vadnais is closed today. I assume the road construction and re-making of the area has begun since there has been some big equipment parked there. Ironically, yesterday was the first day in quite a while that we actually saw a few small groups of warblers there. We will certainly miss having that lovely drive no longer open to through traffic. [mou-net] Carver County
Birding this morning was quite productive at Rapids Lake MVNWR. I covered the 1/2 mile loop trail south of the visitor's center, the Rapids Lake trail from the visitor's center to just north of the 3rd outlet channel, and a portion of the Carver Loop trail at the north end of the unit from the end of the Rapids Lake trail. I turned around as the Carver Loop trail began running along the west/east flowing creek that borders the north side of the unit. Activity was greatest from Carver Rapids(Minnesota River) to just south of the first outlet channel and north of the 2nd outlet channel all the way to the north edge of the unit. Lincoln's Sparrow were quite numerous today, and there were likely more than what I counted especially along the Carver Loop trail. Rapids Lake itself was covered in pelican. The complete list of birds is below(not all species counted). Canada Goose Trumpeter Swan Wood Duck Mallard Wild Turkey Double-crested Cormorant American White Pelican 450+ (view of far north end of Rapids Lake was obstructed so not all pelican were counted) Great Blue Heron Sharp-shinned Hawk 2 Killdeer 4 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Ring-billed Gull 4 Mourning Dove Chimney Swift 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Easatern Wood-Pewee 2 Eastern Phoebe 5 Great Crested Flycatcher 2 Yellow-throated Vireo 3 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Warbling Vireo 6 Philadelphia Vireo 4 (probably a 5th bird) Red-eyed Vireo 6 Blue Jay 50 (first migrant flocks(28 and 13) of fall) American Crow Tree Swallow 1 Barn Swallow 1 Black-capped Chickadee Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 White-breasted Nuthatch House Wren 10 Marsh Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 Eastern Bluebird 1 Swainson's Thrush 1 American Robin Gray Catbird Cedar Waxwing Ovenbird 2 Black-and-white Warbler 1 Tennessee Warbler 3 (including a breeding plumage male showing no signs of molt) Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Nashville Warbler 8 Connecticut Warbler 1 male Common Yellowthroat 25 American Redstart 2 (including an adult male) Magnolia Warbler 3 (1 adult and 2 immature) Yellow Warbler 1 female Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 (both female) Field Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 18 (including a tailless recently fledged bird with some down remaining, a presumed parent was next to it) Lincoln's Sparrow 9 White-throated Sparrow 8 Northern Cardinal Rose-breasted Grosbeak 13 Indigo Bunting 2 Eastern Meadowlark 1 Common Grackle American Goldfinch Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
